Alex Choi on Viral Stunts, Crazy Police Chases, Being a ‘Stringer’ and Regrets

This week we’re happy to welcome Alex Choi, making what he tells us is his ‘real’ podcast début whilst also being the youngest guest we’ve ever had on the show. Despite being a hugely well-known streamer and content creator (you may have come across some of his more notorious escapades online), he’s rarely given interviews, until now. Alex tells Scotto about his journey into being a ‘stringer’ and the world of automotive social media that he’s inhabited for a decade, and they get into the challenges along the way: from his complicated youth right up to the present, reconciling all the things he’s seen and believe us – it’s a lot! As for regrets? Well, he’s certainly got a few! Here he is to tell us everything. Enjoy! CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains macabre themes and graphic detail of the aftermath of road traffic accidents and other incidents that Alex has witnessed in the course of his work. Discretion is advised. @Alex.Choi @BrianScotto @321ActionAction Partners: FCP Euro Heat Wave Visual Wera Tools KW Suspensions Producer: Nick Rutter @nickrutterarts Editor: Nick Selgrath @not-built-for-this Music: SlikSound  Patreon: https://patreon.com/u37266647 https://bio.site/321actionaction podcasts@321actionaction.com 00:00 - Intro and Content Warning 01:29 - Why Alex Avoids Podcasts 05:09 - Owning the Controversy 06:36 - That Tesla Jump & Fallout 09:09 - Flock Cameras & Hoonigan Plates 14:26 - Police Chases & CHP 18:34 - Burnout on Cars as Work 22:30 - Car Collection and Secret Love for Minivans? 26:13 - Sponsor: FCP Euro 27:40 - Police Scanners - How it Actually Works 30:03 - DUI Crashes and Gaps in the System 38:31 - Night Shift Reality 39:17 - Why Chases Fascinate Us 41:57 - Cybertruck Chase Shutdown 43:44 - Going Viral on Snapchat 45:16 - GT3 Chase Car & Ballistic Doors? 50:00 - Knife Attack Close Call 52:07 - Sponsors: Heat Wave Visual, Wera Tools & KW Suspensions 53:59 - Takeovers and Police Relations 57:40 - Brotherhood Raceway Story 01:01:41 - Takeover Culture Reality Check 01:02:00 - Guns, Drugs and Nitrous 01:13:47 - Takeovers : Stolen Cars? 01:15:37 - Ford GT at a Takeover 01:16:10 - What is a Stringer? 01:17:15 - Streaming Culture - The Rush 01:19:12 - Burnout And Mental Health 01:19:50 - Where it All Started 01:21:49 - Desensitized To Death 01:28:15 - Is This Journalism? 01:35:53 - Alex’s Way into Car Culture 01:39:07 - Money And Early Fame 01:43:14 - Controversy as an Identity 01:46:48 - Tesla Jump Backlash 01:52:43 - Graphic Content Boundaries - What is Too Far? 01:56:06 - Disassociation: How Cops & EMTs Cope 01:59:19 - How to Build a Stringer Car 02:04:11 - Addicted To Pursuits 02:06:19 - TV Vs Streaming Shift 02:07:29 - Hobbies Hyperfixation 02:15:47 - Childhood Brain Tumour 02:24:19 - Car Culture Crackdowns 02:25:56 - Cops Who Love Cars 02:28:21 - Pulled Over Stories & Anti Cop Backlash 02:34:27 - Joining Forces.. David Freiburger and Scotto on How Roadkill Happened, Road Trip Therapy & Why Old Cars Just Win

“Don’t get it right; just get it running!” - words we could all stand to live by! This week we welcome David Freiburger, colossus of the automotive world who alongside Scotto, forms a mildly senior (sorry.. ‘Authoritative’ ! ) coalition of men yelling at clouds. Though you may know him best from his adventures with Roadkill alongside Mike Finnegan, David’s roots in the car world go back to magazines, with storied career chapters spent at the wheel of multiple titles. Making the jump to video, he put in time at MotorTrend and now, his own YouTube channel. In this hugely wide-ranging conversation, the gents litigate everything from the glory days of heavy metal (Dokken anyone?), to Drag Week and countless records and tales from the drag-strip, even including hearing damage. Crucially though, could David be the guest that finally causes the blind to see and the lame to walk? By which of course I mean poor Scotto, and his unfinished projects – dear Lord, we need a miracle! 45 Days in Jail For Making a Car Video - Was It Worth It? | Blake Wilkey Tells ALL

Whoa, dude! If it isn’t Off-Road Spicoli: the urban legend behind Urban Assault, king of the dirt and crown prince of the waves – Blake Wilkey! Arriving from his native San Diego with a warm smile and a glint in his eye, you just know this mystical rad-man has wild stories to relate. From his earliest days on the water, to his mechanical upbringing in the dirt, he found his way to mythic status when he turned his hand to building bugs (some of them, you may just have heard before!). Before long, that mischievous gleam in his eye landed upon his own city, and when Urban Assault exploded across the internet in 2016, his legend was as cemented as perhaps the most radical (..ok, nefarious) character in the automotive space. Now, he’s here to tell the full tale as well as his other antics, including the NORRA, Baja, his own brand Shreddy Lyfe and his latest diabolical creation…. the death boat? So! Turn on, tune in and drop out to this freestylin’, tube-wave-ridin’ conversation. The First Automotive Influencer? | RJ de Vera's life in Cars from The Fast and the Furious to SEMA

Very Vehicular welcomes RJ de Vera! Each season we like to bring on a guest from inside the automotive industry whose position and experience helps us better understand the issues facing car culture, and while RJ is more than qualified in that regard, there’s more that he’s done… much more! He was a foundational part of the import scene in the 90s, working as a writer and photographer for Super Street before ascending to Editor at Large. He was the go-to guy on the scene consulting for a plethora of OEMs and brands looking to break off a little piece of the magic for themselves. He even had a role in a notable movie franchise - word to the wise is he’s still collecting residual checks for his on-screen role to this day. Trading the underground for a storied chapter in the corporate world (twelve years at 3M / Meguiars no less), he’s now taken his rightful place atop the mountain as Vice President of Marketing at SEMA. Of most interest to us though? He’s a fully paid-up, card-carrying car nerd, with extraordinary stories and an insight into car culture you won’t want to miss. Gen X vs Millenial vs Gen Z | Car Culture. Takeovers, EVs, Hypercars & Burble Tune

It’s the Battle of the Generations on Very Vehicular this week, as our three guests debate their views on car culture. Representing Gen X is your host, Scotto. In the tastefully grey (or is it green these days?) Millennial corner, it’s returning friend of the pod, Ron Zaras, and lastly, hoisting the flag for all of Gen Z, we’ve got newcomer Chaz Warren (@ChazzyDawg). Chazzy made his name in the world of film photography, where his visceral style found viral success on Instagram, his camera acting as a passport to a world of cars he’d only dreamed of being able to approach. Now, alongside working for big names in the industry, he’s set his sights on creating his own culture of photo-forward meets, where the old rules don’t apply, as he brings community to legions of young car worshippers, whether they’re toting analog or digital machinery. So whether you’re prehistoric; or barely old enough to sneak out of the house unhindered by your parents tracking you on Life360, find out what this unusual council makes of it all. Not just content to produce content (ha) he owns and runs no fewer than sixteen businesses, and his complex in his native Dortmund is droolworthy. There’s the workshop itself, a burger bar, a theater-style dyno and down the block, his very own Pace Car Museum, housing his own creations alongside a staggering assortment of motorsport and car culture’s most significant metal.
