Songscapes Season 2: A Day in Cootes Paradise was recorded on July 5, 2019 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Cootes Paradise is a 1500 acre wetland on the western edge of Lake Ontario, owned and managed by the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG), a charitable organization. It lies alongside the city of Hamilton, Ontario. The site is a National Historic Site, a Nationally Important Bird Area (IBA), and an Important Amphibian and Reptile Area (IMPARA). Species in Focus: Eastern Warbling-Vireo

The Eastern Warbling-Vireo is greyish olive bird that can be found in deciduous trees in open areas in the central and northeastern United States, and in the prairies and southern parts of Ontario and Québec in Canada. Its name is quite descriptive of its song — a rapid and almost frantic warbling song that is loud enough that you are more likely to hear this bird than see it. In 2025 this species was split from the Western Warbling-Vireo, which has a much more disjoined sounding song. I’ll be sharing its songs and sounds in future episodes. Species in Focus: Northern Yellow Warbler

The Northern Yellow Warbler is a bright and cheerful sounding songbird found during the breeding season all across North America. Males of the species are yellow with some red flecks along their chest, and are very songful. They have a number of different songs, but their most common one can be described as sounding like “sweet sweet, sweeter than sweet”. In 2025, this species was split from what was called simply the Yellow Warbler, so this might be the first you’re hearing of it being a Northern Yellow Warbler. This is in contrast to the Mangrove Yellow Warbler, which has a reddish head and is a nonmigratory species found along the mangrove shores from Florida, south to Mexico, the Caribbean, through Central America down to South America. The song of the Wood Thrush is one of the most widely-loved songs of all North American birds. Known by the mnemonic "ee-oh-lay", the male song is able to produce two notes at the same time, giving it a flute-like quality. This is a blend of two recordings, recorded on July 1, 2018 & June 30, 2019 at McMaster Forest in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with an iPhone 6S and Edutige EIM-001 microphone. It's early May at Vinemount Meadows Sanctuary at about 5am. The chorus frogs are singing, and the American Woodcock is "peenting", and as the day emerges, many birds add to an impressive dawn chorus.
