    The Other Side of Exoneration: The Unsolved Murder of Jackie Harrison

    In the summer of 1987, a young New Jersey mother is found brutally murdered. The case shocks her community, but when an arrest is made not long afterward, many believe the person responsible has been caught. Decades later, advances in DNA testing reveal that the man convicted of her murder could not have been the killer. The discovery exposes a wrongful conviction, sends the investigation back to the beginning, and leaves her family once again searching for answers.     The Path Off Deerfoot Road: The Unsolved Murder of Laralee Spear

    On an April afternoon in 1994, a fifteen year old Florida girl gets off her school bus at the entrance to the dirt road leading to her home. From there, she still had about a quarter mile to walk. The narrow road cut through thick Florida brush, with dense vegetation pressing in on both sides and tree branches overhead creating an almost continuous canopy. It was a walk she knew well and one that usually took only about five minutes. But this time, she never made it home. Later that same afternoon, after she was reported missing, a sheriff's helicopter found her body not far from where she had gotten off the bus. Investigators eventually arrested a suspect, but before the case could ever go to trial, the case against him unraveled. Today, 32 years later, detectives are still trying to figure out who killed her so close to home.     A Jog In The Wilderness: The Unsolved Disappearance of Amy Wroe Bechtel

    In July of 1997, an avid runner spent the afternoon running errands before driving into Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest to map out a 10K route as part of her marathon training. When she didn't return home by nightfall, her husband knew something was wrong. Friends, family, and volunteers quickly began searching the trails, believing she may have been injured somewhere along her run. But after an extensive search turned up no sign of Amy, investigators began to consider that she may no longer be in forest at all and that her disappearance was the result of foul play. As the investigation unfolded, attention turned to Amy's husband. His actions in the days after her disappearance and his limited cooperation with investigators led to years of public debate. Some believed he had been unfairly judged, while others felt there were too many unanswered questions to ignore. At the same time, investigators never ruled out the possibility that Amy had crossed paths with a stranger. That theory gained renewed attention years later when a suspected serial killer was placed in Lander around the time Amy disappeared. Nearly 30 years later, Amy Wroe Bechtel's disappearance remains one of Wyoming's most enduring mysteries. Was she harmed by someone she knew, or did she become the victim of a chance encounter while out on a training run? After decades of investigation, no one has been able to explain what happened after Amy set out that afternoon.     Pregnant and Missing: The Unsolved Disappearance of Ali Gilmore

    In early 2006, a 30-year-old woman in Tallahassee was four months pregnant and navigating a tricky time in her life. Cautiously optimistic about welcoming her rainbow baby, she was also going through some personal troubles. Her and her husband had been separated for a few months and she was casually seeing another man, whom she was breaking things off with to work on her marriage and prepare for the arrival of the baby. After a regular day of working her 9-5 office job followed by her side gig at a grocery store bakery, she headed home to get off her feet. That was the last anyone saw her.  Even though she was normally in touch with friends, family, and co-workers every single day, a series of events led her to not be reported missing for a few days. The investigation revealed persons of interest, clues around a late night telephone call, and a missed counseling appointment. All of these things paved the way for theories. Finally, fifteen years after her disappearance, more of what happened that night came into light but it still hasn’t been enough to close the case.     A Tragedy Beyond Measure: The Murder of Angelikque Sutton and a Discussion of Fetal Abduction

    While recently covering the disappearance of Branson Perry, I briefly discussed the murder of his cousin's wife, Bobbie Jo Stinnett, a victim of the rare and devastating crime known as fetal abduction. That conversation led me to a discussion with returning podcast guest and retired Bronx Homicide Detective Robert Klein, who investigated a remarkably similar case in 2015. In this episode, Rob joins me to discuss the murder of 22-year-old Angelikque Sutton, a young mother-to-be whose life was stolen just days before she was due to give birth. Fetal abduction cases are incredibly rare, but when they do happen, they leave devastation that reaches far beyond the immediate victim. We discuss Angelikque's case, the deception that often surrounds these crimes, and the patterns investigators have observed across similar cases over the years. We also discuss the striking parallels between Angelikque's case and the recent Netflix documentary Maternal Instinct, and how understanding these patterns may help prevent future tragedies.     Secrets in Skidmore: The Unsolved Disappearance of Branson Perry

    When we think about the natural order of life, we expect that one day we'll have to say goodbye to our parents and grandparents. It doesn't make that loss any easier, but it's a reality most of us understand is likely to come. What we don't expect is for a younger family member to die before their time. The grief of losing a child or grandchild is something most people can't imagine, and if it happens once, you hope it's the only tragedy of that kind your family will ever have to endure. But today's story is about a grandmother who faced that heartbreak again and again. In a farming town of fewer than 200 people, JoAnn Stinnett faced tragedy tied to violence three separate times. The case we'll be focusing on today is that of her grandson, Branson Perry, a young man who stepped outside for what should have been a routine task and was never seen again.     The Clarksville Killings: The Unsolved Murders of Azuria Johnson and Felicia Carson

    Just after the start of the New Year in 1996, two women are found brutally stabbed to death in their own homes in city of Clarksville, TN just days apart. This came only a month after another woman had been found stabbed to death in her Clarksville home. That case would eventually get solved, while the other two are still waiting for answers. Outside of the local area, these cases have not received a ton of coverage. And because so little is known, its never been clear if the cases are connected. Today I’ll walk you through what is known and the theories that are out there, in the hopes that it jogs someone's memory and provides information that could help solve one or both of these cases.     The Trap: The Unsolved Murder of Morris Davis Jr.

    In April of 1985, a Montana man is working multiple jobs to save money and pursue his dreams. After getting off one job, he went straight to his second job to deliver pizzas. As he approached a regular looking house for delivery, he would have no idea that he was walking into a trap. His own brother would be the first responder who showed up to the house, a scene that has never left him. The investigation produced many suspects, some wrong turns, and closed in closely on a violent repeat offender. But nobody has ever been arrested for this calculated crime and investigators believe its highly likely that more than one person was involved or knows information.
