Let’s talk about the term GRAS (generally recognized as safe). GRAS applies to chemicals that are in our environment and food. GRAS implies that the chemical is regulated and has been through a lot of safety studies. However, the FDA allows companies to self-certify their chemicals as safe. There are about 10,000 chemicals in our food supply, and 99% of them have not been reviewed for safety. GRAS is more of a loophole that companies use to imply that their chemicals are safe despite outside testing. Six chemicals that are generally recognized as safe:  1. Nitrates:  • Help preserve meat  • Increase shelf life  • Increase the risk of cancer  • Could be in your drinking water 2. BHA: • A preservative  • An endocrine disruptor  • A carcinogen 3. BHT:  • A preservative  • An endocrine disruptor  • Toxic to the liver and kidneys  • Increases cancer risk 4. When faced with a gout diagnosis, many people are told to reduce their intake of red meat, organ meats, and shellfish because they contain purines. Purines turn into uric acid, and for a small percentage of people, removing them from the diet may eliminate gout symptoms. However, many people find that avoiding purines alone doesn’t help.Research has found that one of the strongest drivers of gout is insulin resistance. Uric acid is normally eliminated through the kidneys and the gut. When you have insulin resistance, it becomes more difficult for the kidneys to flush out uric acid. Today we're going to talk about the metabolic syndrome myth. Metabolic syndrome is also known as syndrome X. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of several conditions, including: • Abdominal obesity • High blood pressure • High blood glucose • High triglycerides • Insulin resistance • Hyperinsulinemia • High uric acid Metabolic syndrome is typically treated with a lot of medications, and there isn't a well-known cause. I believe metabolic syndrome is a protective mechanism. But it's not protective anymore. Let's first take a look at glucose and fructose. When you consume glucose, receptors all over your body metabolize it. Fructose is a unique type of sugar that can only be metabolized by the liver. Fructose produces more fat and enhances the fat genes more than other types of sugar. Early humans may have infrequently consumed fructose in fruit and honey as a survival mechanism for various reasons. These reasons that used to be beneficial are now contributing factors to metabolic syndrome. We don't need fructose for survival anymore—in fact, it's hurting us. If you have problems related to metabolic syndrome, try avoiding fructose in all forms.
