    Just The Gist of… Tyra Banks (and her history of bizarre business failures).

    With this week’s premiere of Netflix’s ‘Reality Check: America’s Next Top Model’, it seemed like a good time to take a look into the history of the Smize Queen herself: Tyra Banks.  You know her as the creator and host of America’s Next Top Model. You know her as a Victoria’s Secret Model. You know her as the woman who yelled, “WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!” But do you know Tyra Banks as the boss of several (failed) businesses? A Twilight-style Young Adult novel/movie/product empire called ‘Modelland’ that was cancelled after one book. A beauty line called ‘Tyra Beauty’ that was actually an MLM and folded in less than two years. A theme park based on… ‘models’ that she said was too hard to describe but was essentially just a place to get $1500 glamour shots (also no longer in business). And now, of course, we have Tyra’s ‘Hot Ice Cream’ at her ‘Smize and Dream’ ice cream store (which has already had some food regulation dramas).  .     On November 17, 2019, the world watched as Prince Andrew (since downgraded to regular person BUT WORSE), scored one of the biggest PR own-goals in history during a Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis. Convinced the interview would be his chance to get rid of those pesky Jeffrey Epstein rumours once and for all, it became clear within minutes - to everyone but him - that things were not going to end up the way he planned.  By the time the 49-minute interview was over, all Andrew had proven to the world was that the only thing he lacked more than self-awareness was empathy, and the only thing he seemed to have in abundance was an astonishing sense of entitlement, that gave him an uncanny ability to prove that the Dunning Kruger effect very much exists.     Just The Gist of.... Biosphere 2

    In 1991, a billion-dollar experiment took place, designed to see if humans could survive in an artificial earth inside a giant glass dome that would eventually be built on other planets. Years was spent building Biosphere 2 in the USA, and inside was an ocean with actual tides and waves, a rainforest, a desert, vast wetlands, a farm with crops, animals, housing and laboratories. ‘Rain’ could even be switched on and off. Eight Humans lived inside it for TWO YEARS. So why has hardly anybody heard of it? Because it was a disaster, none of it worked, and they nearly died. Turns out, despite sounding impressive, this experiment wasn’t run by NASA or even scientists, it was run by a bunch of hippies from a cult-like experimental theatre group who had no clue what they were doing, but had duped a billionaire into giving them a lot of money. .     JTG MIN-EDIUM... John Allen Chau

    The Sentinelese people are one of the last remaining isolated Indigenous tribes on earth, continuing to live today as they have for thousands of years. Since 1956 they have been protected by laws that prohibit anyone approaching their home on North Sentinel Island. But the laws are also in place to protect any outsiders who try to go there, as the Sentinelese tribe have pretty much tried to to kill anyone who goes near them.  Despite this, in 2018, a 26-year-old evangelical Christian missionary named John Allen Chau decided that the Sentinelese people, who had been living peacefully on North Sentinel Island for thousands of years, were actually part of Satan’s Last Stronghold on earth, because they had not yet accepted Jesus into their hearts by being converted to Christianity. John Allen Chau decided to change that. John Allen Chau is now dead. This is just the gist of John Allen Chau. .     JTG MINI: How one interview may have ruined Timothée Chalamet’s chance at an Oscar.

    Timothée Chalamet has made no secret of the fact he is campaigning HARD for this year’s Best Actor Oscar for his role in ‘Marty Supreme’. But many are saying he made a major misstep in a recent interview, in which he declared that audiences shouldn’t take his work for granted, as he’s been delivering ‘some top level shit’ for years. Cut to an industry-wide eyeroll and the line ‘some top level shit’ immediately becoming an embarrassing meme. So did he ruin his Oscar chances? Timothée’s team has always marketed him as an earnestly ambitious wunderkind - his brand is taking himself and his art REALLY SERIOUSLY, but in a charming way. When he won a SAG award in 2025 and said in his speech that he wanted to be ‘one of the greats’, people called it ‘refreshing’.     We didn’t plan this but 2026 is starting with a NEPO BABY themed week!  Remember when famous actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were sent to prison for literally taking spoilt Nepo Babies?  Over $25million in bribes exchanged hands. Almost every major elite university in the USA was involved. And at the end of the day, the whole thing came down to dodgy photoshop and old-school cheating on tests.. Rick Singer made a fortune when he realised that rich, entitled parents would do anything to get their kids into the best US colleges. But when Rick Singer was busted by the FBI, he quickly flipped and told authorities everything about his 'side door' entry system, leading to a worldwide news frenzy when a lot of very privileged, high profile parents were arrested AND ACTUALLY SENT TO PRISON.
