The Inseparable Relationship Between Islam and Islamism

New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 171 A heated and important discussion rages about the two parallel terms "Islam" and "Islamism." Are they the same? Is there some difference? Is that difference, if it exists at all, a distinction without any real difference? Different people have different, and strong, opinions on this matter. To look into it in this episode of New Discourses Bullets, host James Lindsay does something he's famous for doing: turning to an original source. In this case, the source is Sayyid Qutb's 1964 book Milestones, a radical Jihadist Salafist book that reinvigorated and reinspired the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, then beyond. He reads a short segment here from Milestones (https://amzn.to/4vQZNC7) that makes clear that at least for Qutb's style of Salafist Islam, "Islam" as the religion and "Islamism" as "the movement" to implement that religion are intrinsically connected in the same way as theory and praxis are wedded in Communism. Join him to understand that while there is a conceptual difference between the religion and the "correct" movement to implement the religion, they are in fact at the end of the day fundamentally inseparable. Milestones, Vol. 4: Sayyid Qutb's Islamic Bolshevist Vanguard

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 213 In the 1960s, a radical Islamic Salafist named Sayyid Qutb wrote a short little radical book called Milestones (https://amzn.to/4bn9hMX) in which he laid out a new vision for what the world usually calls "Islamism" today. That model wasn't just rooted in a backwards-looking radical fundamentalist vision of Islam called Jihadist Salafism as taken up by the Muslim Brotherhood; it was also based directly on Vladimir Lenin's radical model for creating and installing Communism through Bolshevism, particularly Lenin's 1902 booklet called What Is To Be Done? (https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1901/witbd/) The prescription is for an ideologically pure radical vanguard to take control and pull the ideology into global dominance, even against its own moderates. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay continues his reading of Milestones in a fourth volume, outlining the nature of this vanguard approach as Qutb explains it in his third chapter and tying it definitively to other radical ideological movements, especially Lenin's Communism. Propaganda and the Palestinian Cause

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 212 The entire world is turning today around the "Palestinian" Cause, but what is it? It is a fabrication. It is a manipulation. It is a forgery. It is a psyop. This fact, and the many facts it is based upon, is plainly and beautifully articulated in Danny Burmawi's (https://x.com/DanBurmawy ) new book Islam, Israel, and the West: A Former Muslim's Analysis (https://amzn.to/4y7rgAQ), which New Discourses recommends, especially for beginners to the subject. Burmawi himself is a Christian ex-Muslim who originally hails from Jordan, lived many years as a Christian in Lebanon, and has since moved to the United States where he has established the Ideological Defense Institute (https://idicenter.org/) (IDI) (https://x.com/idicenter). In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay reads just a little over two short sections from Burmawi's book to introduce the realities of the so-called "Palestinian Cause" to New Discourses listeners. Join him to understand that much with that situation is not as it appears. [Full disclosure: James Lindsay is on the IDI board of advisors, but Burmawi did not ask him to produce this podcast.] Join us for the Preserving Liberty Conference at Sea!: https://ndcruise.com Support New Discourses: https://newdiscourses.com/support Follow New Discourses on other platforms: https://newdiscourses.com/subscribe Follow James Lindsay: https://linktr.ee/conceptualjames © 2026 New Discourses. The Nazi Experiment, Vol. 16: What Hitler Got Right, Wrongly

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 211 Hitler didn't like parliaments. Indeed, much of his political formulation was based on his absolute hatred for them. Interestingly, his critiques of parliamentary bodies in Mein Kampf is largely correct, if a bit polemical. This introduces an interesting situation where Hitler is correct on a narrow but important point and then proposes the wrong kind of solution to it, in this case a dictatorial tyranny. Such a situation can be particularly seductive for someone who doesn't realize better alternatives exist. When confronted with a genuine problem correctly articulated and a proffered solution, that solution looks very attractive even when it's wretched. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay continues the Nazi Experiment series in a sixteenth volume by exploring Hitler's critique of parliaments and uses it to paint a stark contrast between the American Experiment and the Nazi Experiment. Join him to understand even more deeply how brilliant and insightful the American founders were at setting America apart from European disasters.
