    Footscray Community Response: A community evaluation of the Footscray CBD Security Patrol Program

    We're in the middle of three cataclysms: ecology, community violence and world politics

    Jacques and Jennifer catch up on a few cataclysmic developments since the last 'Think Again' in 2025, namely:(1) extreme weather events brought on by climate change;(2) the Bondi massacre and its fall out, including some shameful weaponisation of the tragedy for political purposes, and(3) the megalomaniac spinning out of control of the US under Trump and implications for Australia.

    Loss of bodily and situational awareness while immersed on mobiles: What are the implications?

    If you've noticed people walking our streets and in public spaces, not looking where they're going while immersed on their mobile phones, it's not your imagination. It is happening everywhere! What is often referred to as 'distracted walking' has been well researched across the world, reducing people's safety and situational awareness, and leading to a variety of injuries and even death.Jacques and Jennifer talk about the implications of this, invoking Pierre Bourdieu's notion of 'habitus', describing how we unconsciously internalise societal ways of doing things and act them out. Thus the 'habitus' of safely navigating footpaths and roads is competing with the (normalised) habitus of being on mobile phones while walking. Most insidiously, our tech giants have evidently made direct inroads into our minds and our bodies on a regular basis.Jennifer and Jacques suggest some political resistance by disconnecting from mobile phones while out and about, at the same time increasing safety and improving mental health.

    In the shadow of Trump's Gaza 'Peace' Plan: Palestinians are driven from the West Bank

    Whilst our official media and our government seem to have decided that all's now OK in Palestine, Gaza and the West Bank, and that Trump's so-called Gaza Peace Plan 'needs to be given time to work its way through', on the ground stories from the West Bank give a rather devastating account of what's happening behind the media silence...     Runaway racial profiling by Victoria Police revealed in the data

    Tamar Hopkins from the Racial Profiling Data Monitoring Project talks about the latest data showing that Victoria Police target certain groups, with members much more likely to be searched than white people and have force used against them.     Why we need to stop the Victorian Government from introducing adult jail sentences for children

    Sophie Ellis from Youthlaw talks about the Victorian government's proposal for children (14 years and over) committing certain crimes to be given adult jail sentences. The Bill is set to go to Parliament by the end of the year even though the legislation hasn't been drafted yet.As Sophie explains, the proposal doesn't address the reasons for children offending in the first place, and it doesn't offer the support and alternative programs that children and young people need to prevent future offending.The Bill is not backed by evidence about what works with young people whose brains are still developing, and would expand the expensive false solution of incarceration. Importantly, in the long run it would make the community less safe, while inflicting violence on children themselves.
