All That Glitters | The Diamond King, Ep 1

In 2010, a fresh-faced newcomer launches himself into the luxury world of high-end jewellery. His name is Nirav Modi, an ambitious diamantaire who dropped out of business school to make jewellery for the world’s elite. His vision is to fuse East with West; to bring something of India’s tradition into western designs.  Within a few years, he’s risen to the top. He opens stores on the most prestigious shopping streets in New York, London, Macau and Hong Kong. But he doesn’t stop there; he wants his name in bright lights around the world. For now, it seems Nirav’s rise is unstoppable. But there’s something about him that leaves those around him feeling unsettled; and then, the questions start – where are the billions coming from?  Sign up to our most popular newsletter, From the Editor. Brazil’s gambling addiction

The figures are startling - 2.1 million Brazilians have a clinical addiction to betting and 7.5 million are problem gamblers. Women now comprise 40% of all gamblers, having been 25% just a decade ago. Online sports and casino betting have exploded in Brazil to make it one of the largest gambling markets in the world. The self-help group Gamblers Anonymous says it is receiving thousands of calls each month and millions of Brazilians are estimated be suffering financial, emotional or relationship problems as a result of betting. Camilla Mota talks to football fans in Sao Paulo about why they are gambling on their team’s result. She speaks to a man who gambled away $75, 000 on a corporate credit card, a businesswoman who locked herself in the toilet of her family home in order to bet in secret and meets two psychiatrists offering treatment to addicts at a special clinic. What can be done to protect problem gamblers and avoid driving legal gambling underground? **This edition of Assignment was updated on 25 August to correct the title**

China: The rise of a science superpower

Roland Pease explores how decades of strategic investment and diligent educational reform have brought China to the brink of global scientific dominance. As the world’s other scientific superpowers seemingly retreat from their historical high ground, how has China achieved such remarkable progress, both in applied and fundamental sciences? And what might that mean for the rest of us? The Most Secret Places in the World

The Most Secret Places in the World - And the wild theories about what really happens inside. In the modern world, places are supposed to be accessible. People move freely around the country they live in and even between countries.  However, the most interesting, fascinating and mysterious locations in the world, even today, are strictly off limits to just about everyone.  Most of the places on this list are only accessible to those with the proper clearances, but some are not accessible to anyone at all. Regardless of the status of the places on this list, if you're searching for them, you absolutely do not have the proper access to visit them.  The tantalizing status of the unknown and the secret makes these spots remarkable. You probably have your own theories about what goes on at some of these locations. If you don't, we'll provide some. You may not have ever heard of a few of these places. In fact, there are government facilities in the United States -- and around the world -- that are unknown to people even in the highest levels of government.  Let's find out why. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thewhyfiles/support Learn more about your ad choices.
