    Lobbying, Donations, and Democracy w/ the Green Party's Ricardo Menéndez March: 30th September, 2026

    Though out this National led governments term, allegations of corruption have dogged the party. The gutting of tobacco controls by MP's who had previously been paid by tobacco companies, improper access by big corporates getting sued by local activists and the law changes put in place to protect the big guys, and just last week Nicky Hager's latest book, Dirty Work, was released, shocking the nation with the lurid stories of a-moral right wing political operatives and their networks of power. That same week the Green party announced their policies to “clean up politics”. Aotearoa New Zealand has some of the laxest lobbying rules in the world, with few checks or balances on the access and influence the private world can have on our leaders. The Greens seek to amend this by making a public register for all lobbyists, on whos behalf they are working as well as restricting donations to political parties to individuals, banning corporate entities from directly contributing to a political parties campaign. At the same time, Labour has ruled out a Green Party Finance minister if they are to form government after the election, but on the current polls the Green Party would be taking their largest ever portion of seats and making up a huge fraction of whatever Government Labour wishes to form. So for this week's catch up with Green Party MP Ricardo Menéndez March, we discuss on the Greens' call to clean up politics, Labour ruling things out before the election and the state of MMP.

    NZ First, 'Make New Zealand Healthy', and the role of Prevention in Election Health Approaches w/ The University of Auckland's Professor Boyd Swinburn: 29 September, 2026

    NZ First has announced a 15-point ‘Make New Zealand Healthy’ plan, placing emphasis on the role of prevention in health approaches, pointing to the cost burden of avoidable health issues. However, whether or not this plan effectively tackles the issue is a different question. Prevention has also become an increased priority for other political parties, with Labour, Greens, and Opportunity all discussing prevention in their health approaches. Host Alex spoke with Professor of Population Health at the University of Auckland, and Chair of Health Coalition Aotearoa, Boyd Swinburn, about NZ First’s plan, its problems, and what it and similar approaches get right going into this election.

    Opportunity's election bottom lines w/ Opportunity Party leader, Qiulae Wong: 30th Sep, 2026

    Yesterday, Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong released the party’s five bottom lines heading into the election.  The first was to bring prices down by giving greater powers to the Commerce Commission to go after anti-competitive businesses. The second, to introduce lobbying reform and cap political donations. The party will demand a 10-year cross-party plan for health, alongside banning bottom trawling from damaged inshore areas, with the goal of phasing out the practice entirely. And finally, they have committed to recommitting to our commitments under the Paris Accords and protecting the role of the Climate Change Commission. Conspicuously absent were the party’s central tax reforms and citizens income policies, which Wong addressed in the following media standup, saying that such major changes were unlikely to happen in the short term. So to hear more about what these bottom lines will mean for the party - and how much wiggle room might be left for post-election negotiations - producer Theo was joined in our studio by Opportunity Party leader Qiulae Wong.
