Uber vs Africa: The Problem With Scaling Fast

On this episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans dig into Uber's exit from Nigeria and Uganda, and what it means for two assumptions that have long gone unchallenged in tech: blitzscaling and Africa as the next big market. Dominic argues Uber's downfall in its largest African market comes down to one thing, they never had a defensible moat. They didn't own the drivers, the cars or the customers, which meant they could only ever compete on cost, funding their way to scale rather than owning it outright. The duo unpack what actually makes a moat work, network effects for Meta, ecosystem lock in for Apple and Google, and why Uber's software layer was never enough on its own. That leads into a wider debate on whether blitzscaling is dead or simply was never bulletproof without something defensible underneath it.From there, the conversation turns to the "Africa is the next big market" assumption, using AI adoption as a litmus test. Evans makes the case that population size and smartphone access don't automatically translate into spending power, and that the money still flows disproportionately from the US and Europe even in supposedly saturated markets. Dominic pushes on whether it's really about purchasing power or about undercutting competition from Bolt and inDrive eating into Uber's already thin margins. The episode closes with a look at Tesla's cybercab strategy, and why owning the fleet outright might finally deliver the business model Uber always wanted, along with a more reflective moment on what "success" really means for a startup once reality, and administration, catches up with the hype.To keep up with Dominic’s and Evan's Journey, check out their LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-mulinda/https://www.linkedin.com/in/evans-kanyithia-munene_______________________________________________________________Join Dominic & Evans as they explore the world of tech and share their bold takes with guests on Admin AccessSubscribe to our podcast, drop a like, comment, and hit the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content.Don't forget to spread the word! Disruptor or Middleman? The Business Model That Broke Twiga Foods

On this episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans unpack the collapse of Twiga Foods, the Kenyan agritech that raised over $185 million before splitting into two companies and landing in administration. Dominic makes his case for the episode: Twiga didn't die when it went into administration, it was already dead long before, administration just made it official. The pair trace Twiga's arc from its 2014 founding by ex-Coca-Cola exec Peter Njonjo, built on cutting out the brokers between smallholder farmers and mama mbogas, through its pivot into non-perishables, its own trucking fleet and depots, and eventually buying a 650-hectare farm that undercut its original thesis. Evans makes the case that Twiga never really disrupted Marikiti-style informal markets, it just tried to out-compete them, subsidised by venture money rather than by fixing the underlying margins. They get into the mechanics of venture funding itself, why a plateau reads as decline, why growth has to compound year on year, and why "administration" is really just the moment the music stops. That leads into the leaked "Project Easter" slides, a strip-it-for-parts scenario that Dominic argues is standard practice elsewhere but nearly impossible to execute transparently under Kenyan and African insolvency law. Dominic draws a parallel to Boeing offloading Wisk and its autonomous units, and to Google's acquisition of Motorola for patents alone. The episode wraps with a detour into Bending Spoons, the Italian company quietly buying up "yesteryear" SaaS names like Evernote, Airtable, Meetup and WeTransfer once they've fallen from grace, and why African markets don't yet have a legal path for that kind of second-life acquisition. Evans closes with an ecosystem metaphor: dying companies aren't wasted, they're the insects that recycle value back through the system. To keep up with Dominic’s and Evan's Journey, check out their LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-mulinda/https://www.linkedin.com/in/evans-kanyithia-munene_______________________________________________________________Join Dominic & Evans as they explore the world of tech and share their bold takes with guests on Admin AccessSubscribe to our podcast, drop a like, comment, and hit the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content.Don't forget to spread the word! The Acquisition Game: What Makes a Startup Worth Buying?

On this episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans run through a rapid-fire "Skill or Luck," rating five different startup scenarios and taking their own verdict on each. They start with whether raising money is skill or luck, with both agreeing it's skill , surviving investor due diligence, where every backer probes something different, from product to finances to vision, takes a rigor that can't be faked, even scammers need it.The conversation moves into getting acquired by big tech, where both again land on skill. Evans argues that standing out enough to be bought, in a market flooded with copycats, means either being genuinely exceptional or genuinely threatening, while Dominic pushes it further with acqui-hires specifically, arguing that when a company buys the people and not the business, that's skill in its purest form.It carries into layoffs, where the mood shifts. Evans calls it luck, arguing that mass layoffs are rarely personal but a blunt instrument driven by shifting business priorities, while Dominic agrees with the framing, adding that you can be the best in your field and still be in the wrong department at the wrong time.Things get genuinely contentious on fundraising in a down market versus an up market. Dominic holds firm on skill, arguing that investor conversations are still one-on-one so skilled founders can always reframe their pitch, while Evans argues that heavily-funded businesses get locked into cost structures that leave them fragile when the market turns, pointing to Samsung and SK Hynix as proof that even giants get swept up in swings they didn't create. The episode wraps up with the sharpest question of the day: what happens when a new competitor or technology suddenly wipes out your edge overnight. Evans calls it luck, arguing that no one, not even Google, could have predicted the exact shift that would catch them off guard. Dominic counters that it's the reaction that matters most, pointing to Zapier and Nintendo as proof that adapting to the unexpected is where real skill shows up.To keep up with Dominic’s and Evan's Journey, check out their LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-mulinda/https://www.linkedin.com/in/evans-kanyithia-munene_______________________________________________________________Join Dominic & Evans as they explore the world of tech and share their bold takes with guests on Admin AccessSubscribe to our podcast, drop a like, comment, and hit the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content.Don't forget to spread the word! Founder Hype & the Rush to Build: Why Everyone Wants a Piece

On this episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans put down the banter for a stretch and run through a rapid-fire "Agree or Disagree," taking opposing sides on some of tech and business's most divisive questions. They start with whether TikTok is really a media company masquerading as a tech company, before moving into whether founders should be replaced once a company outgrows them. The conversation shifts to Africa's fintech landscape, with Evans arguing the continent is still too close to unsolved problems to slow down, while Dominic leaves it to the market to decide. It carries into venture capital, and whether chasing funding rounds has become the default playbook rather than the exception.Things get genuinely contentious on AI, when the question of whether the next trillion-dollar company will come from those building their own AI model is posed. Evans argues that owning the model is non-negotiable at that scale, while Dominic maintains it's the product, not the infrastructure, that ultimately wins. The episode wraps up with the question of whether being a tech founder has become a status symbol. Evans argues that it has, calling it simply the next evolution of "entrepreneur" as the buzzword of choice. Dominic counters that it's actually the opposite, in his circles, building in tech has become so commoditized and expected that it barely signals anything at all anymore. To keep up with Dominic’s and Evan's Journey, check out their LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-mulinda/https://www.linkedin.com/in/evans-kanyithia-munene__Join Dominic & Evans as they explore the world of tech and share their bold takes with guests on Admin AccessSubscribe to our podcast, drop a like, comment, and hit the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content.Don't forget to spread the word! Three Tech Debates. One Brutal Comment Section. | The 1k Sub Special

On this special episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans mark the milestone of reaching 1,000 subscribers by reacting to audience comments, sparking honest debates on some of tech’s biggest questions. The hosts start with AI's quiet takeover of creative work, from AI-generated "slop" flooding social feeds to AI music good enough to fool a cab driver mid-ride. But the real insight isn't doom, it's a harder truth about human behavior: production quality will only keep improving, and the values we claim to hold around craftsmanship rarely match what we actually consume. From there, the pair revisit an old take that hasn't aged well, Dominic's early skepticism about Ferrari's EV strategy, and get called out by a sharp, car-literate audience member who makes the case that Ferrari's anti-EV stance is actually the most "Ferrari" move the brand could make, refusing to build what everyone else is building. The episode closes on the show's favorite recurring argument: are prediction markets just gambling with better branding? Using real examples, from a politician betting against his own confirmed appearance at the State of the Union to everyday risk decisions like staying home during unrest, Dominic and Evans dig into where speculation ends and gambling begins.Evans draws the line at manufactured risk versus risk that already exists, and who you're actually betting against, a bookie's fixed odds versus an opposing opinion on an exchange. Dominic pushes back with his own framework built on time horizon and participation, arguing that dopamine-driven, low-effort bets sit closer to gambling than long-term, high-participation ones like building a business. Neither fully convinces the other, but that's exactly the point. The $1 Billion Bet That Could Rewrite Venture Capital

On this episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans turn their attention to a funding story quietly rewriting the venture playbook: General Catalyst's $1 billion bet on IM8, David Beckham's longevity brand. With no equity, no fixed repayment schedule, no maturity date, and no collateral, the hosts break down what it actually means to fund a business on capped revenue alone, and why a traditional VC would choose this route over the stock they'd normally chase. But the excitement comes with a harder question sitting right underneath it: if capital is fungible and it's flowing hard toward Frontier AI labs, what does that mean for every non-Frontier business competing for the capital left behind?Dominic and Evans debate whether this is private equity's playbook in reverse, isolating the one part of a business that already works instead of buying the whole thing to fix it, drawing parallels to a weak top of funnel as a specific, fundable slice rather than a whole-company problem. The hosts also explore whether more capital is always the answer, pulling in the Zappos lesson that businesses die more from constipation than starvation, and why founders chasing a billion dollars might be inventing problems they don't actually have. The two land on the Kenyan real estate case study, developers who took on more capital than their capacity could handle, and unpack what that says about knowing exactly where capital should go versus simply chasing the biggest check. Because the real strategic question for any African founder isn't "how much can I raise?" but "where in my business would capital actually act like a slot machine? To keep up with Dominic’s and Evan's Journey, check out their LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-mulinda/https://www.linkedin.com/in/evans-kanyithia-munene_______________________________________________________________Join Dominic & Evans as they explore the world of tech and share their bold takes with guests on Admin AccessSubscribe to our podcast, drop a like, comment, and hit the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content.Don't forget to spread the word! Is Apple Building the Future, or Renting It?

On this episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans turn their attention to Apple's biggest WWDC moment  and the strategic question sitting right underneath it.  With Tim Cook stepping down and John Ternus taking the CEO seat, Apple unveiled a rebuilt Siri: context-aware, system-wide, and finally capable of interacting directly with apps. The architecture powering it? A Google Gemini-backed hybrid model. Apple is calling it Apple Intelligence.  Dominic makes the case that if intelligence truly becomes the new operating system, Apple's legendary vertical integration strategy has a dangerous gap in the middle. Owning the chip, owning the device, and owning the user relationship only holds if the layer in between , the intelligence layer  is a commodity. If it isn't, Apple has rented out the heartbeat of its own ecosystem. Evans pushes back with a longer game in mind. As AI costs spiral and companies start questioning whether the juice is worth the squeeze, the conversation is already shifting from raw power to efficiency.  The real unlock, he argues, comes when accurate enough models can run entirely on-device and when that moment arrives, nobody is better positioned to capitalize on it than Apple. ARM architecture beating Intel is the proof of concept. Apple Silicon is the precedent. The two dig into the compute constraint underneath all of it , why energy and hardware limitations are shaping the AI industry just as much as the models themselves, why open-source is quietly becoming a serious contender, and what it actually felt like to download a local LLM on a five-hour flight and realize just how pampered we've all become on frontier cloud models. _______________________________________________________________Join Dominic & Evans as they explore the world of tech and share their bold takes with guests on Admin AccessSubscribe to our podcast, drop a like, comment, and hit the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content.Don't forget to spread the word! Are Telcos Making the Same Mistake as MultiChoice?

On this episode of Admin Access, Dominic and Evans turn their attention to the deal quietly reshaping African connectivity: Airtel's new Starlink partnership. With SpaceX already licensed in 9 of Airtel's 14 African markets, the hosts break down what it actually means to leapfrog cell towers entirely and route calls through satellites instead and why this could fundamentally lower the barrier to entry for building a telco on the continent. But the excitement comes with a harder question sitting right underneath it: when your core connectivity infrastructure depends on a foreign company's rockets, what does that mean for sovereignty?Dominic and Evans debate whether "the benefits outweigh the risk" is a fair trade or a quiet surrender, drawing parallels to MultiChoice's slow-motion disruption by Netflix and asking whether telcos like Airtel are walking into the same fate without realizing it, essentially outsourcing the one thing that made them valuable in the first place. The hosts also explore whether African fintech actually disrupting banking, or just proving that becoming a bank was the endgame all alongWith Flutterwave's licensing moves and Moniepoint's microfinance play as live examples, Dominic and Evans go back and forth on whether maturing into a bank is a graduation or a capitulation and why banks, by design, will always move slower than the fintechs nipping at their heels. The two land the M-Pesa case study , arguably the continent's biggest "bank," has never actually become one. They unpack what that says about staying asset-light versus owning the regulated stack, and why the real strategic question for any fintech founder isn't "bank or not" but "what are you actually trying to build?" _______________________________________________________________Join Dominic & Evans as they explore the world of tech and share their bold takes with guests on Admin AccessSubscribe to our podcast, drop a like, comment, and hit the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content.Don't forget to spread the word!
