    The Púca: The Shapeshifting Creature of Ancient Celtic Folklore

    The púca, or pooka, is often described as Ireland’s shapeshifting creature: a horse on a dark road, a goat in the trees, a bird, a household spirit, or something that carries a traveler beyond the ordinary world. But the surviving record does not describe one stable animal, one consistent appearance, or one documented encounter. This episode follows the púca through the texts that helped define it. It begins with Patrick Kennedy’s nineteenth-century account of a man near Murroe who reportedly saw a goat-shaped presence moving above him in the branches before collapsing. The story is dramatic, but its witness is unnamed, its date is absent, and Kennedy received it through an intermediary. From there, the investigation moves to Thomas Crofton Croker’s early printed folklore collection, W. B. Yeats’s 1888 anthology and Douglas Hyde’s translated material, and a 1936 County Kerry school record preserved by the National Folklore Collection. These accounts preserve a durable tradition, but they also reveal striking variation. The púca can be dangerous, helpful, comic, mournful, animal-like, human-like, and dead.     The Devil Monkey: The Kangaroo-Like Predator Reported Across Appalachia

    The Devil Monkey is said to be a strange, monkey-like predator reported on Appalachian roads: powerful hind legs, short forelimbs, unusual speed, and an appearance witnesses struggled to compare with any known animal. But the Virginia record behind that name is much thinner, and more complicated, than later retellings suggest. This episode begins with the strongest Saltville claim: a reported early-morning encounter in 1959, when the parents of Southwest Virginia woman Paulette Boyd were said to have been driving toward town when an animal sprang from a ditch and struck their passenger-side window. The creature was later described as tawny, white-blazed, powerful in the hindquarters, and apparently tailless. The alleged scratch on the vehicle is the only physical trace associated with the story, but no photograph, inspection, repair record, police report, or contemporaneous account has been located. The investigation then follows a separate report published in 2000: an Ohio woman’s firsthand letter describing a black, sleek, long-tailed figure crossing a road near Roanoke.     In November nineteen seventy-one, two young men searching near the Penn Central railroad tracks in Old Bowie, Maryland, reportedly found a ten-month-old puppy named Ginger dead, with her head and body separated. Within days, the death was connected in local newspaper coverage to the Goatman: a supposed half-human, half-goat figure said to roam the woods and roads of Prince George’s County. But the surviving record tells a more complicated story. Months before Ginger disappeared, University of Maryland student George Lizama had collected eight versions of a Goatman legend around Tucker Road in Clinton.     In April 1977, three reported encounters on the back roads of Dover, Massachusetts, created one of New England’s most enduring cryptid cases. Within roughly twenty-five hours, teenagers Bill Bartlett, John Baxter, and Abby Brabham described a small, hairless or apparently hairless figure with an oversized head, thin limbs, long fingers, and reflective eyes. Bartlett’s drawing, made after a six-second glimpse from a moving Volkswagen on Farm Street, became the image most associated with the creature later called the Dover Demon. The case appears stronger than a single strange sighting. Baxter reported a second encounter near Miller Hill Road only hours later and made his own drawing. The following night, Brabham reported a similar roadside figure on Springdale Avenue while Will Taintor, driving the car, also saw an unusual tan form.     The Fresno Nightcrawlers: The Walking White Creatures Caught on Camera

    In 2007, a Fresno homeowner publicly identified only as Jose reportedly saw something unusual on his home surveillance monitor after his dog began barking. The surviving image appears to show two pale, narrow forms moving across the camera view on long white lower sections, with little clearly visible above them. The image became the foundation of the Fresno Nightcrawler legend, but its strongest feature is also its greatest weakness. According to paranormal investigator Victor Camacho’s later account, Jose preserved the playback by filming his CCTV monitor with another camera because he believed the security system might overwrite or lose the relevant material. The original CCTV source is now unavailable or reportedly lost, leaving later viewers with a degraded recording of a monitor. Camacho interviewed Jose and his family, visited the Fresno property, and reported unsuccessful recreation attempts. In 2010, the Syfy television program Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files investigated the footage and left it unresolved after testing several broad practical recreation categories.     The Vegetable Man: The West Virginia Creature Said to Drain Blood Through Its Fingers

    In mid-July 1968, Jennings H. Frederick reportedly returned from an unsuccessful groundhog hunt near Grant Town in Marion County, West Virginia, when he stopped beneath maple trees and heard rapid, high-pitched speech. According to the account Gray Barker published years later, Frederick could not tell whether the message was audible or somehow perceived mentally. Barker rendered it as a plea for medical assistance and an assurance of peaceful intentions. Then Frederick said he felt pain in his arm. He initially believed briars had caught him. Looking down, he reportedly found an extremely thin humanoid gripping his wrist with three long fingers tipped by needle-like structures and suction cups. Frederick believed the being was extracting blood. He also described changing yellow, red, and orange eyes, enormous uphill leaps, and a humming or whistling sound after the figure disappeared. The story reached print in Gray Barker’s Newsletter in March 1976, nearly eight years after the alleged encounter. Barker identified Frederick by name and reportedly published his mailing address with permission. But the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, which preserves Barker’s archive, describes him as a UFO writer, teller of tall tales, and hoaxer whose work often blurred fact and fiction.
