Designing Circularity is a 4 episode podcast series, created for the exhibition ‘Designing Circularity’. The exhibition is initiated by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in Hong Kong and Macao. The Netherlands is this year’s partner country of the Knowledge of Design Week (KoDW) and Business of Design Week (BodW) events, both organised by the Hong Kong Design Center. Circularity – a sustainable economy that produces no waste and is ‘net zero’ – will be the theme guiding the contributions of the Netherlands to these events this year.

    Designing Circularity: Everyday Goods

    In this episode, we talk with three businesses about Everyday Goods and their role in the circular economy. Daria Biryukova, founder of Studio Mixtura, a ceramics studio designing around circular ceramics production methods, director Mattia Bernini of Precious Plastic, an open source plastic recycling community with hundreds of members worldwide, and co-founder Tom Leenders of Repeat who has developed a completely modular and fully recyclable headphone.     The focus of this episode is the Built Environment, another key area of the circular economy. Nicole Maurer and Marc Maurer, founders of MUA, and architects of the SuperLocal circular housing project in The Netherlands.     Designing Circularity: Design for the Circular Economy in the Netherlands and Hong Kong

    In this episode we speak with the exhibition’s Co-Curators Sjoerd Hoekstra, Hoi Chi Ng and Simone de Waart about the objectives and ideas informing the exhibition, and their ideas of what a circular future looks like. Today humanity uses the equivalent energy and resources of 1.7 earths. If the whole world adopted a Dutch lifestyle, this would become 3.6 earths, or even 4.4 earths with a Hong Kong lifestyle.* We only have one earth. We need to adjust the way we live, work, play and do business so that our lifestyle can be sustained by the one earth we have. This exhibition brings together inspiring examples from The Netherlands and Hong Kong that show how – right now–designers, architects and entrepreneurs are making this a reality by rethinking how we make and use the built environment, fashion apparel and everyday goods. What stands out in these examples is how the designers focus on what happens to a building, clothing or object once it is no longer of use.
