    The Mountain in Galilee

The chief priests pay the soldiers to deny the resurrection, as the parable of the wicked husbandmen in Matthew 21:38-44 foretold. The disciples go to the mountain in Galilee in 28:16, and it is a heavenly mountain. Christ resides eternally in the heavenly city he has prepared for us.

    After the Sabbath

Matthew 28:1 begins 'after the sabbath,' as the two Marys come to the tomb. The chief priests and Pharisees stand against them, guarding the grave. The two Marys waited for the resurrection, and we wait for the second coming.

  3. 1994/04/03

    The Two Marys

Matthew names the two Marys at the tomb, and their name, their gender, and their number all carry meaning. We stand with them in the history of salvation, as the first witnesses of the risen Lord.

  4. 1992/04/12

    The King Comes Meekly

Luke follows Christ's final journey to Jerusalem from 9:51 to 19:27, and on Palm Sunday the King arrives. Christ is prophet, priest, and king, and he confounds the world by ruling meekly and in humiliation. He is the eternal King.

  5. 1990/04/15

The First Day of the New Creation

Jewish women from Galilee are the first to see the empty tomb. The law and the prophets find their fulfillment in Christ. His resurrection is the first day of the new creation.

  6. 1989/03/26

The Two Men at the Tomb

The bodily resurrection of Christ is fundamental to the faith. The 'two men' at the tomb in 24:4 echo Moses and Elijah at the transfiguration in 9:30-32, as the law and the prophets bear witness to the empty tomb. 'He is not here, but is risen.'

  7. 1987/04/19

    Death Is Swallowed Up

The modern world treats death as natural, and Scripture calls it the consequence of sin. Christ wept at Lazarus's tomb, and Moses and Samuel faced death in their own ways. Christ has vanquished death, and 'the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.'

  8. 1985/04/07

    I Have Seen the Lord

John 20 opens in darkness, and the resurrection answers the first creation with a new one. Peter, John, and Mary Magdalene each come to the tomb. Mary goes to the disciples and says, 'I have seen the Lord.'
