    Vlad The Impaler pt. 2 - Forest of the Impaled

    We wrap up this 2 part series starting with the counter attack that followed the end of part 1. Sultan Mehmed II stormed across the Danube to exact his revenge on Vlad for the ballsy winter attack. This man had been through TONS of combat and conquest but NOTHING he had seen would prepare him for what he was about to see… Mile after mile of dead, impaled Ottoman soldiers. Up to 20,000 men on spikes. As far as the eye could see. We’ll also learn the fate of Vlad after some hard times he went through during his reign; remember, Wallachian politics are full of backstabbing and shady dealings. What happens to a man who ruled through sheer force of will and violence? Turns out some really bad things! Then to wrap the whole thing up we have to talk about this Irish author that wrote a book that nobody has ever heard of and the pop culture force that borrowed NOTHING but the name of Dracula would become.

    This time we are covering a man that has fascinated me for YEARS. My school library had a book on him that I took out so often they bought me a copy. Vlad Tepes. Vlad III of Wallachia. Vlad Dracul. Vlad The Impaler… The first part of this series we’ll find out about his horrific childhood and upbringing under the Ottoman empire where he was sent as a hostage, where he learned some neat tips and tricks that he would go on to use against them every chance he got. His first term as Prince of Wallachia and how how he handled crime and the homelessness problem in his country and the impalings. Dear God, the impalings…

    John Stark: The Hero of Bennington

    I’ve been looking forward to this one ALL SEASON. This guy is a hero in my homeland, John Stark may have grown up in the wilderness of New Hampshire and lived there his entire life but… He wrote and performed his greatest work in Vermont. Bennington, Vermont to be specific. Where he led a group of farmers and untrained rabble up against one of the fiercest units that fought on the side of the Loyalists in the American Revolution, the Hessian Dragoons. The story leading up to the Battle of Bennington on its own is super interesting though, he fought at Fort William Henry in Lake George, NY. He fought at Fort Ticonderoga, NY. He also took part in this little thing that happened in Massachusetts called Bunker Hill. ALL OF THAT pales in comparison to the importance of a battle he led in a field in Southern Vermont though… We beat them here today or Molly Stark Sleeps a Widow Tonight. God he was awesome. If you think I’m slightly biased, you’re absolutely right. Enjoy!

    Fritz Haber: The Monster That Fed The World

    Fritz Haber: The Monster That Fed The World This week we cover a… Complicated man. He’s one of the most important scientific minds that we as humans have ever produced, he literally changed how we produce produce and fed the world. For this invention and what it did won a Nobel Prize. He won that prize the same year he was being hunted across Europe as a war criminal. Now, that’s a big jump, right? I feel like we skipped over the fact that Fritz Haber is the father of chemical warfare. The man that discovered how to pull nitrogen out of the atmosphere to make farming more effective, also personally ordered the deaths of 5,000 men at the Battle of Ypres in 1915. But that’s not the only thing that makes him a monster. He’s got A LOT of blood on his hands, some of it was that of his family. Somehow simultaneously a hero and a monster, one of the most important scientists of the 20th century and a man that is responsible for 100,000 deaths during WWI alone; not accounting for what his work would be turned into after his death in 1934.

    The Swiss Guard: In The Service Of Heaven

    We travel back to a time where somehow, Switzerland had one of the most powerful militaries ON THE PLANET. The crazy part is, they didn’t even use it themselves. They sent them off to the highest bidder for a while until The Pope struck a long term deal, the longest term deal in military history; over 500 years with the Swiss. They sent their best and most brutal fighters to The Vatican to protect the Throne of Christianity. They swore an oath to The Pope. Not to protect and serve; but to die in his service if it required. This was a deal paid for in the blood of Swiss Guardsman on the stairs of St. Peter’s Basilica in one of the bravest last stands in human history. 189 men stood tall against a force of at least 20,000 armed and desperate mercenaries. 106 to 1 odds.     Diogenes: Man in the Jar

    This week we’re doing something a bit different. Not a violence wizard. Not a weird criminal. This man is closer to a cryptid. Diogenes was born into wealth and a high station in life and he decided “Meh, it’s gonna be a no for me dog” and gave EVERYTHING UP. Yeah, sure he was exiled from his homeland first but I think he would have been an odd duck either way. He became one of the strangest, most fascinating and off-putting philosophers in human history. Public masturbation, fighting dogs for food, pissing on folks when he was bored, and of course there’s the whole story of the chicken… BEHOLD. PLATO’S MAN! I had a blast with this and I hope you do too!

    The Khamar-Daban Incident: Dyatlov Done Different

    This week we travel to a mysterious corner of the former Soviet Union, a beautiful mountain range not far from Lake Baikal. A region that could kill you in a heartbeat in the right circumstances. The Khamar-Daban mountain range is a well explored and hiked area but, when a hiking party died strangely for no apparent reason very quickly much like the Dyatlov Pass Incident it makes it hard to accept the official story. But unlike that case we have something here that’s unique… A survivor that witnessed EVERYTHING.
