ES005|English Shades 英文語感光譜|都是「拿到」,英文為什麼不只用 get?|More Than “Get”: How Did You Actually Get It?

We need to get everything by Friday. get 當然沒有錯。 obtain、secure、acquire、collect、realize…… 🎧 Story first. English follows. https://yingyingthealpaca.firstory.io/join/tier/019fc281-7d30-e8e5-9af6-bee898843016 A permit, funding, new skills, equipment, fees, and finally—a profit. In Chinese, many of these moments can simply become one idea: “getting” something. But English can reveal much more about how it happened. Ten days before an exhibition opens, Ying Ying and Tang Tang are still missing several essential resources. Looking at the checklist, Tang Tang says: “We need to get everything by Friday.” There is nothing wrong with get. But over the next ten days, each thing arrives in a completely different way. Some things are obtained through a formal process. Some resources have to be secured through effort and planning. Some skills are gradually acquired until they become part of what you can do. Some payments need to be actively collected. And sometimes, value on paper does not become a real financial result until a profit is actually realized. Through obtain, secure, acquire, collect, realize, and other shades of “getting,” this episode follows one exhibition from its frantic final preparations to the results that come afterward. Because English doesn't always tell us only what you got. Sometimes, the verb tells us how you got there. 🎧 Story first. English follows. Money Came In—but Did You Really “Earn” It?

你也會聽到: make / earn / get / receive / win / bring in / gain以及 bring home、gross、net、profit、pull in、pull down、bring home the bacon 等表達。 Story first. A teaching fee.Ticket revenue.A bookstore voucher won in a raffle. They all look like money coming in—but did she really earn all of them? What’s the difference between money you make and money you earn? Why can a workshop bring in NT$24,000 without Ying Ying bringing home NT$24,000?And why can she earn her teaching fee through work, but receive that same fee when it reaches her bank account on Monday? In this episode of English Shades, we don’t begin with a vocabulary list. First, follow Ying Ying through the story of her first paid English workshop. Then we’ll rewind the story and look more closely at why English chooses different words for different kinds of “getting.” Along the way, we’ll explore: make / earn / get / receive / win / bring in / gain plus expressions including bring home, gross, net, profit, pull in, pull down, and bring home the bacon.
