    DnD Creatures: Merfolk & Tritons

https://www.patreon.com/cw/RollForLore Take a deep breath and grab your trident... this week on Roll for Lore, Sean and Jess head underwater to cover two of the Forgotten Realms' most criminally underused races: merfolk and tritons. We're talking full lore breakdown, from their first appearance way back in the original Monster Manual all the way through to their modern 5e treatment as both monsters and playable races. We dig into their gods first, because the sea pantheon is way more dramatic than people realize. Eadro, the merfolk and locathah creator deity, leads a coalition of good and neutral aquatic gods called the asathalfinare... and they're locked in an eternal cold war against Panzuriel, a kraken-god backing the sahuagin and their shark-toothed nightmares. Tritons get their own divine champion too, Persana, who's basically the sea's answer to a paladin order. We trace how this rivalry plays out across the Sea of Fallen Stars and the sunken city of Myth Nantar, one of the coolest underwater locations the Realms has ever produced. From there we get into the stats and crunch... how merfolk show up as a low-CR humanoid with that classic amphibious trait and a spear, while tritons evolved from a Princes of the Apocalypse era ally race into a full playable option with elemental resistance and a serious grudge against demons. We talk plotlines too: elemental cults stirring up trouble in the depths, sahuagin raids on merfolk settlements, and how tritons ended up as frontline defenders against the Elemental Chaos itself. DND Monsters: Demons Part 1

We are kicking off a deep dive into the Abyss and honestly... we don't even know where to start because the Abyss is massive and deeply unhinged. So we're doing what any reasonable lore nerds would do, we're going in challenge rating order and starting at the bottom. And the bottom of the demonic food chain is a wild and strange place to be. This episode is all about the low CR demons, the weird funky little guys that don't get talked about enough. We're talking manes, the pitiful miserable bottom rung of demon society... dretches, which are basically just clouds of suffering with legs... quasits, the sneaky little imps of the Abyss... and more. These aren't the flashy demon lords, these aren't the ones with cool names and big campaigns built around them. These are the ones that make the Abyss feel genuinely alien and gross and wrong in a way that honestly slaps. Sean and Jess dig into where these things come from, what they actually are in the lore, how they've changed across editions, and why the bottom tier of demonkind might just be the most interesting part of the whole hierarchy. Buckle up because it gets weird. DnD: Drow Dragons, Shadow Dragons, Deep Dragons and the Jaezred Chaulssin

What happens when you cross a drow with a dragon? You get one of the most criminally overlooked corners of Forgotten Realms lore — and one of the wildest stories in the entire Underdark. This week on [Show Name], Sean and Jess dive deep into the Drow-Dragon: a creature born from centuries of slavery, shadow magic, and a rebellion so brutal it reshaped drow society forever. We start with the basics — what is a Deep Dragon, why do they hate the drow they pretend to ally with, and how did the term "drow-dragon" first appear in Dragon Magazine #206 back in 1994? Then we crack open Eric L. Boyd's 2007 free web enhancement City of Wyrmshadows (yes, it's still out there, and yes, it's a goldmine) to tell the full story of Chaulssin, the City of Wyrmshadows — a drow city conquered by Clan Jaezred shadow dragons in 221 DR and held in chains for over 800 years. From there it gets unhinged: the rise of the zekylyn half-dragons, the slave rebellion of 634 DR, the malaugrym shapeshifter infiltration, the founding of House Jaezred, and the eventual creation of the Jaezred Chaulssin — a secret patriarchal assassins' guild dedicated to tearing down Lolth's matriarchy one city at a time. We cover the destruction of Ched Nasad, the Silence of Lolth, and the shadow dragon Shimmergloom's conquest of Mithral Hall (yes, that Mithral Hall — Bruenor Battlehammer's home). In this episode: What is a Deep Dragon? Lore, abilities, and shapeshifting powersThe two types of Drow-Dragon: Deep Lineage vs. Shadow LineageThe fall of Chaulssin and the rise of the zekylynThe Jaezred Chaulssin: D&D's most patient assassins' guildShimmergloom and the fall of Mithral HallHow to use drow-dragons in your 5e campaignWhether you're a Dungeon Master hunting for your next BBEG, a Drizzt Do'Urden fan curious about the lore behind Streams of Silver, or just here for cursed Underdark politics, this one's for you. DnD Monsters: Centaurs

From the wedding brawl that ended up carved on the Parthenon to the forests of the Forgotten Realms, centaurs have one of the richest histories in both real-world mythology and Dungeons & Dragons. In this episode we dig into all of it. We start at the source — ancient Greece, where centaurs weren't just "horse people" but a philosophical argument about civilization versus savagery. We break down the Centauromachy, the infamous wedding battle between the Lapiths and the centaurs that became one of the defining myths of the ancient world, and introduce every major player: Pirithous, Theseus, Caeneus the warrior who couldn't be killed by any blade, and the centaurs who crashed the feast and paid for it. We also talk about Chiron — the great exception, the wise mentor who tutored Achilles and Jason and became the template for every sage teacher in fantasy fiction. Then we trace centaurs through the full history of D&D — from their appearance in the original 1974 White Box all the way through 2nd Edition, covering every sourcebook, supplement, and Dragon Magazine appearance along the way. We get into their lore in the Forgotten Realms: where they live, how their tribal societies work, their complicated relationship with elves, and the surprisingly interesting detail that their own god Skerrit exists and they mostly just... don't call him. And we talk about Timoth Eyesbright — the good-hearted centaur adventurer from the 1988 DC Comics AD&D series who became one of the most fully-realized centaur characters in Forgotten Realms canon, including his four-issue showdown with Xanathar the Beholder crime lord of Waterdeep in the Catspaw arc. Topics covered: centaur mythology, Greek mythology, the Centauromachy, Chiron, Lapiths, D&D monster history, Forgotten Realms lore, centaur society 5e, Skerrit, Cormanthor, the High Forest, the Shaar, DC Comics AD&D, Timoth Eyesbright, Xanathar, Waterdeep Great for: D&D players and DMs, Forgotten Realms fans, mythology nerds, anyone who wants to run a centaur NPC or PC that actually feels real.
