Science & Wisdom

Dr. J

Join us as we explore the scientific questions shaping our world, trace their roots through history, and consider how they might influence our future. Hosted by Dr. J, a scientist with over 25 years of experience studying how chemicals in our environment, pollutants, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, and everyday toxicants, impact human health and well-being. Co-hosted by Ella, Dr. J’s daughter, who brings curiosity and clarity to the conversation, they’ll uncover the stories behind the science and why they matter for the future.

Cotton Candy Clouds and Popcorn Lung — The Truth About Vaping Flavors

Why Cotton Candy, Mango, and Crème Brûlée: The Flavor Science Behind Vaping's Newest Regulatory Battle A few months ago, on May 5, 2026, the FDA authorized the first-ever fruit-flavored vaping products — mango and blueberry disposables from Glas, Inc. — based largely on built-in Bluetooth age-verification technology, not new clinical evidence of smoking-cessation benefit. Days later, the agency also said it would deprioritize enforcement against unauthorized flavored products more broadly. In this episode, Ella and Dr. J (toxicologist and Ella's mom) trace how we got here: from Hon Lik's 2003 invention of the e-cigarette as a harm-reduction tool, through JUUL's 2015 nicotine-salt breakthrough and the resulting teen vaping "epidemic," to two decades of regulatory whack-a-mole — bans with loopholes, disposables filling the gaps, and synthetic nicotine dodging oversight entirely. They also dig into the chemistry: why flavoring chemicals deemed safe to eat (GRAS) can be dangerous to inhale, how diacetyl caused "popcorn lung" in factory workers and later turned up in flavored e-cigarettes, and how cinnamaldehyde, synthetic cooling agents, and heavy metals from degrading heating coils add their own risks — often with no requirement to disclose any of it on the label. The episode closes with practical guidance for teens, parents, adult smokers considering switching, and clinicians navigating a market where the science and the regulations haven't kept pace with each other.

The Hidden Dangers of Tear Gas

In this episode of Science & Wisdom, Ella and Dr. J unpack the science behind tear gas and pepper spray — chemicals most people assume are harmless, temporary irritants but which carry a far more troubling health profile than widely recognized. Drawing on emerging research, they explore how these agents work at the molecular level, hijacking pain-sensing nerve receptors (TRPV1 and TRPA1) to trigger immediate respiratory, ocular, and skin responses. But the conversation goes deeper: new studies are linking tear gas exposure to persistent respiratory damage, cardiac abnormalities detectable weeks after exposure, and striking reproductive health effects — including menstrual disruption in 83% of exposed individuals and community-level reports of increased miscarriage rates in heavily exposed populations. Ella and Dr. J also confront a striking paradox: these chemicals are banned in warfare under the Geneva Protocol yet are routinely deployed on civilians, including children, pregnant women, and people with preexisting health conditions — the very populations never considered in original safety studies. A century of use has not been matched by a century of research, and federal funding to close that gap remains critically insufficient. The episode closes with practical first-aid guidance for those exposed and a broader call for manufacturer transparency, evidence-based deployment policies, and the funded, independent research needed to protect public health.
