9.【Recorded in Moose 錄自白鹿洞｜A Quick Tour of Moose 印象白鹿洞】(English/英文)

Last Spring, I brought my students to a bookstore near Shida for two visits. The bookstore is called Moose, 白鹿洞, and it offers book and DVD rentals in comics, romance, martial arts novels, nonfiction, anime, blockbuster movies, and art films. I chose to have a field trip to Moose because the space is like a living archive of global and Asian pop culture—which matches the theme of the course (Popular Culture and Inter-Asia Dialogues). The store also lived through an intriguing history about the business of media circulation in Taiwan. It has transformed from a chain store to a full-on independent operation. Besides, the place is nearby. It’s just a few blocks away from the Shida campus. Our first visit was a simple “come check it out” trip. The second time, we got creative in there. I had graduate students set up recording stations and invited the students to create some audio material for the Shida Stories series. In this episode, you’ll hear what some of my Gen-Z students say about Moose as a place. Though books are constantly challenged by other media and digital distractions, they too bring new experiences. Books are not old-fashioned. They could be a new fashion. Hello and welcome back. It’s been a long while since I last updated this series with new episodes. I still teach at Shida. I still produce podcasts. I incorporate podcasting into my teaching whenever I can. Sometimes the goal is to experiment with the audio form. Other times, it is a cool way to hear oneself out. A narrative exercise. In the spring of 2025, I designed a collective audio recording project with my undergraduate students. I had recording stations set up inside a neighborhood book rental store called Moose. Then I invited my students to use their voice to create some storytelling material for this podcast series. I suggested 3 ideas for their recording exercise. First, they could tell their “Shida stories,” like the characters and experiences they encountered around Shida. Since the class is about popular culture in Asia, they could also share a popular culture experience involving themselves. Finally, they could introduce Moose the bookstore as they experienced it. In this episode, you’ll hear Huang Chi-en’s voice (黃啟恩). He has another name, Yvo Wagian, reflecting the Kankanaey language and ethnic heritage of his mother’s side of family in the Philippines. 7.【On Inclusion 融入與納入】(English/英文)

These three questions are inter-related, though the answers do not necessarily correspond. The university, department, and society at large could each have their own mode of inclusion (and exclusion). 6.【Post-Apocalyptic Shida 末日師大】(English 英文)

In JJ Green’s short story, “The Collector,” a young woman finds an old picture of Shida Night Market in an antique shop. She bargains patiently with the middle-age owner, and eventually pays for it with one gold earring and 45 thousand yuan. Too much? Not enough? And what kind of a payment is that? In this episode of Shida Stories, we encounter Shida in a post-apocalyptic time through JJ Green's sci-fi short story, "The Collector." 5.【再會，陳姐；再會，師大裡的諾丁丘 Farewell Ms. Chen, Farewell Notting Hill】(中文/Mandarin)

【Shida Stories 師大的故事系列用音訊紀錄片（audio documentary）、音訊散文（audio essay）、多語言、多口音等形式，刻畫、印象化師大周邊的人物與場景。由蔡如音Eva Tsai製作、錄音、剪輯。】我的衣櫥裡有一半的衣服是在師大的個性小店買的，特別是有大人味、正式風，卻又帶點個性的服飾。以現在的消費型態，蓬勃發展的網路、社群購物模式，或許有點令人難以理解。師大怎麼會在跟服飾店扯上關係。但曾經有一陣子，師大附近的小巷子內，是挖寶的好地方。 2010年前，大約有七年，我非常的幸運過著走路上班的日子；那時師大裡的巷子還沒有櫛比鱗次的服飾與餐廳店家，倒是有零星的個人小舖，混合著通常是（年輕女老闆）「嚴選」日本、香港、跟台灣本地手工設計的小物，下班時，在巷弄裡挖寶成了一個抒壓的樂趣。陳姐的店我很早就注意到，在泰順街40巷，是師大夜市裡一個相對熱鬧的巷弄，店名很倫敦，叫「Notting Hill」，深藍的招牌底色，明顯呼應著英國倫敦西區有名的諾丁丘市街景色，應該是同名好萊塢愛情電影Notting Hill的效應，台灣翻做《新娘百分百》。有意思的是，雖然店名很英國，展示櫥窗玻璃上，則貼著「東京商品」四個字；陳姐的店的正對面是一家叫「布拉格」的手沖咖啡，紅磚古典庭院裡有一顆茂盛，固定開著俗稱雞蛋花的緬梔樹，樹下停著一台蒂芬妮藍的英國小車MINI Cooper，裝飾用的。同一條巷弄，還有一家叫雅買加倉庫的簡餐店，跟一間頹廢文藝氣息的Cafe Bastille（巴士底咖啡），想起來，那時「文青」兩字的文化經濟威力，才正蠢蠢欲爆發。進到陳姐約15坪大的店裡，展示衣架與商品櫃分佈在各角落，走到底，牆上有一區時尚穿搭剪貼，通常是歐洲服裝秀的雜誌照片。陳姐年約50，短髮不上妝、身形嬌小，穿搭休閒，總是低調的在折疊，或是排列商品，她不怎麼招呼客人，加上衣服的價格普遍比其他師大的小店貴，總覺得有些傲氣與距離，跟其他迅速與客人熱絡的服飾店不一樣，好幾年下來，我都只是看看，沒有試穿，也沒有消費。師大夜市，在2011年底開始急速擴張，新的服飾店、餐廳往住宅巷弄裡竄，晚上人聲鼎沸，本地遊客、國際旅客、新興頭家，好不熱鬧。當時許多服飾店標榜著「韓風」、「正韓」的裝飾商品，原本以日常、次文化著稱的師大夜市，竟「潮」了起來，與新的消費文化符號發生關係。在地居民有各種聲音與行動，不可否認，師大夜市與巷弄的文化氣味正在發生改變。當時，我開展了一個研究計畫，想瞭解遽增的韓風服飾業者，他們是誰？如何做起了韓風商品的買賣，又怎麼選擇在師大開店，原本在師大的服飾業者，又怎麼看待這個發展。我開始在師大附近做起了觀察與田調。就是這一個不單純的動機，讓我跟陳姐終於有了互動。沒有以前太過安靜的尷尬，我混在年輕的學生與下班的上班族裡，跟她閒聊著怎麼看師大夜市的改變，特別是韓風服飾店，她難得的用細細的聲音，高分貝抱怨，「都700家拉！」陳姐略帶輕蔑的談著韓國服飾。她的店主打「東京商品」，每幾個月就前往東京大阪帶貨，對於日本服飾的品質，讚譽有加，連Gap這種全球國際品牌在東京的商品，都與其他的地方的品質不同。她拿起一件韓國的針織衫，說他們的「針數」，因為快時尚的生產模式，都減到最低。聊材質、聊版型，陳姐是實踐服裝設計系畢業，年輕時，曾替（台商）成衣廠做設計，每次飛中國，就有100多樣商品等著她驗收。在她眼裡，打版師傅才是這個產業最厲害的，「設計師」聽起來雖然光鮮，多數沒有能力將一塊布變成一件衣服。為何一位服裝設計專業出身的陳姐，會淪落到出國帶貨？講「淪落」，可能言重了。委託行、貨運行還是跑單幫在台灣的歷史很久，特別是在國際旅遊還沒有開放或發達的解嚴前後。提供小資創業模式，並且活化了在地的消費與眼界。在全球化的時代，新世代更是找到了各種結合旅遊、移地、跨地的新型態工作模式。職業無貴賤之分，只是陳姐的專業，應該原本不是用在帶貨。選擇的轉換，跟她必須扛起單親撫養兩個孩子有很大的關係。2000年初，陳姐開了Notting Hill，每幾個月固定去日本帶貨，偶爾也會去香港跟首爾，她會用簡訊通知老客戶她的出國行程。好幾次，我的確看到她的一些老客戶悠哉的在店裡試穿衣服、話家常。「慢慢玩」，陳姐說。衣服要試穿，才會瞭解自己跟發現自己適合什麼。聽多了，我也放下研究者的顧慮。記得第一次在陳姐的店入手的衣服，是一件綠格絨布的厚棉襯衫，木村拓哉fu，中性帥氣，版型修長有腰身，很合我意，唯一的問題是，胸圍太窄，扣起來會有個尷尬的空間。陳姐幫我縫上按釦，解決了問題。師大夜市巷弄裡的泡沫商機，讓許多房東順理成章提高租金，甚至是將原有空間隔成兩間，承租給兩個店家，擴大利益。陳姐的店對面的咖啡店布拉格，跟她們的Mini Cooper最先離開，房東收回物件，在原有古典風味的空間開了快速時尚的韓風服飾店。庭院裡的雞蛋花樹依舊，空氣中流動的成了K-pop的節奏。過了不久，師大居民抗爭商圈的擴張，新的店家離開了，舊的店家因為翻倍的租金不在。陳姐的店，Notting Hill，也就這樣關門。一開始，陳姐搬到永康街裡一個公寓五樓，開始了無店面、工作室與住家合併的生活型態。公寓外表頗有小豪宅的華麗，但因為兩個高中大學的小孩也同住，陳姐的工作室空間，只剩下還需放下一張床的小客廳，與其說是商品的展示空間，還不如說是儲放空間。一年後，陳姐搬到了台大溫州街的老公寓三樓，那裡空間稍大，進門處還有一個布簾，可做試穿室，鏡子、衣服的擺放也比較沒那麼擠。我那時生完老二，請了育嬰假，想放風時就會來找陳姐。幾年前的研究早已結束。現在的狀態與疑惑，是個人的；不免俗，是當身體與心境因為為人母，都進入液態、流動狀態時，如何能自信舒服的穿搭。陳姐總是鼓勵我慢慢的玩，反正試穿看看不會怎樣。談到衣服、品牌、版型、流行款式，陳姐總是很能投入，對於我的個人意見，包括帶領襯衫的執著，跟針織衫的偏見，對雪紡紗的痛恨，她多半都是聆聽，再透過一些品項的推薦試穿，讓我去感覺能勝任的穿搭。有衣服的問題，我也會直接問她，即使不是從她這裡購入的衣服。有一回，我請她幫我看一件我的白色短版羽絨衣，最上面的銀色大釦子脫落了，她一看，說這是很特殊的按釦，恐怕難以找到一模一樣的。因為是最上面，接近胸口上方的釦子，在冷天裡扮演重要的「門戶」角色，我還是請她幫我補救，她說，若無法找到一樣或接近的釦子，還不如撞色，在她的鈕釦盒裡找了顆黑色的，一樣大小的釦子，幫我縫上。有一次，我提到自己有一條非常愛的法國牌子的長裙，這條藍色單寧超長裙有日本禪風的圖樣，低調又有氣場，圖樣、剪裁與腰身皮帶皆經過縝密計算裁縫，我自一家目前已不存在的百貨公司購入，超過十年，卻因為腰帶太寬，皮帶洞數不夠，總是擺著欣賞，而無法真正放手去穿。老實說，這是挑身高的長裙，我曾經拿給多位裁縫師，尋求修改妙方，但多半因為要破壞剪裁而作罷。陳姐端詳了一番，說需要打洞機，但在沒有打洞機跟墊片工具零件的情況下，她說還是可以打新的洞，然後用縫的方式收邊，並且在保留圖案完整性的前提下，幫我修改腰身。過往我穿衣隨性休閒，加上在大學任教，沒有服裝壓力，忠於個人喜好就行。隨著年歲的增長，社會化的洗禮，我開始想要做有正式大人感，卻又不失個性的穿搭。我逐漸在陳姐嚴選的衣物中，找到這樣的搭配，若要找款式，也會敲她，請她帶貨時幫我注意一下。每隔幾個月去陳姐的小公寓時，頗像擁有頂級私人購物專家personal shopper的感受。每回，我大概會帶回三到四件衣服，我花的金額，大概8000-1萬出頭。我不是什麼大戶，而且陳姐店裡帶回的衣服，品質好又耐穿。我也會擔心，靠熟客做生意，在網路與社群媒體時代，陳姐能撐下去嗎？陳姐何時還會有店鋪嗎？離開師大後，她沒有再經營實體店面，曾經有一個月，彷彿曇花一現，陳姐的工作室「又落地了」，她跟朋友借了一個店面空間，在新生南路跟信義路的大馬路上。陳姐的煩惱應該還不少，但她似乎也還沒放棄再回到「地面」。 2019年，陳姐稍來消息，說工作室有了新的地點，靠近捷運東門站。我很快的找了時間去瞧瞧，地點在連雲公園旁，跟當年在師大的店環境有些類似，是安靜的巷弄。店面舒適、寬敞，陳姐也還忙著整理。有別的熟客在，我自己逛自己的，很期待這個空間，也替陳姐開心。也帶了兩件衣服回家。不久過後，陳姐在LINE上傳訊息，工作室暫時休息，專心抗癌。今年年初，她的女兒透過陳姐的LINE帳號說，媽媽走了。
