    "How Cities Talk" S1 Ep4

Every city has a secret language. Not just accents — but words, phrases, foods, and tiny cultural habits that instantly tell you where someone is from. This week’s episode of How Cities Talk explores one of my favorite regional comparisons yet: Pittsburgh:“Jeet yet?”and chipped ham. Minnesota:Hotdish.Bars.And an almost religious distinction between casserole and hotdish. What sounds funny on the surface actually says a lot about working-class identity, immigration history, hospitality, regional pride, and the way communities hold onto culture through language. The older I get, the more I realize dialect isn’t just about words. It’s memory. It’s geography. It’s community. And sometimes it’s somebody’s grandma trying to feed you before you even answer the question. New episode out now. Get full access to Adam Beers at ayinzernamedadam.substack.com/subscribe

    "How Cities Talk" S1 EP3

Tonight’s VIP early release of How Cities Talk – Episode 3 is officially here. This week, Pittsburgh and the Twin Cities go head-to-head in one of the weirdest regional language matchups yet:🌿 Jaggerbush vs 🦆 Duck, Duck, Gray Duck We’re diving into:• the thorny chaos of Pittsburghese• why Minnesotans refuse to say “Duck Duck Goose”• the shared Midwestern love of saying “pop”• the legendary insult “jagoff”• regional identity, immigration history, and local pride• PLUS featured small businesses from both cities This episode might be the most ridiculous one yet - in the best possible way. It’s nostalgic, chaotic, educational, and deeply committed to treating local slang like a serious cultural documentary. Subscribers are getting this episode FIRST tonight before tomorrow’s public YouTube release. As always:Different cities. Different codes. 🎙️ Get full access to Adam Beers at ayinzernamedadam.substack.com/subscribe

    "How Cities Talk" S1 EP2

    S. 1, Ep. 2 of “How Cities Talk” This week is:Pittsburgh’s “nebby” vs the Minnesota Nice phrase “that’s… interesting.” Two ways of saying the same thing…just very differently. In Pittsburgh, if you’re being too nosy, too involved, too in someone else’s business -you’re nebby. Simple. Direct. No confusion. In Minnesota, you’ll hear something like:“that’s… interesting.” And it might sound polite, but it can mean: * I disagree * I don’t like this * please stop talking Same situation… just delivered differently. Dialect and the unique story it tells is very intersting to me and I hope you continue to enjoy this series and I continue to build it out and go on another journey with you. "How Cities Talk" S1 EP1

    S. 1 Ep. 1 of "How Cities Talk” YINZ 🤝 OPE Two cities. Two vibes. Two completely different ways of saying… basically nothing and everything at the same time 😂 In Pittsburgh, “yinz” steps in where English falls short—a second-person plural that’s efficient, expressive, and full of identity. It’s not just a word… it’s culture. Meanwhile in the Twin Cities, “ope” is doing emotional labor. It’s the reflex, the apology, the “lemme just sneak past ya real quick” all rolled into one tiny sound. One solves grammar. One solves social awkwardness. Both are iconic. So be honest… 👇 Which one are you using? 👇 What’s YOUR city’s version of this? And if you made it this far—yes, now my handle @ope_a_yinzer on my socials finally make sense to everyone 😌 #Yinz #Ope #Pittsburgh #TwinCities #Minneapolis Get full access to Adam Beers at ayinzernamedadam.substack.com/subscribe
