#0011 - Dr. William Dixon (and Kane)

Retired Surgeon, Special Forces Veteran, Certified Scuba Diver, & Grandpa are just a few descriptors of this remarkable guest. Kane Dixon wanted to get the story and wisdom of his Grandpa to be able to share with his kids, other great-grandkids, and the rest of the family. Both were generous enough to give us a glimpse into their relationship and share their stories and thought provoking wisdom with us, and for that I am grateful.Enjoy the conversation and let us know your thoughts! Like this video and subscribe for more talks like this!Stogies with Bogey Podcast |Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of PerspectiveReal People, Real Conversations. Here is the longform introduction: My high school buddy Kane Dixon, grandson of Dr. William "Bill" Dixon, pulled me aside during the reception of CJ Barbee's wedding. As a veteran himself, like his father (Bill's son) and his grandpa, Kane shared how he wanted to capture Bill's stories on record for his kids and family. "You have to have my Grandpa on", he said after we put away a few beverages. That feel good idea sparked this podcast episode, where we dive into three generations of military service and life lessons from the remarkable 87 and a half-year-old Bill Dixon.Born in a blue-collar family, William "Bill" Dixon earned a scholarship to Columbia University where he graduated and then attended New York Medical College where he graduated as valedictorian earning the opportunity to give an address at Carnegie Hall. Facing financial strains, he enlisted in the Army for support, marrying his high school sweetheart who bore three children in four years. Amid early family life and a personal crisis during his Hawaii internship—where he gained pilot and scuba certifications and wrestled varsity in college—he sought purpose, volunteering for Special Forces, a major shift from his internal medicine career. After jump school and officer training, he volunteered for Vietnam and served in Germany's 10th Mountain Division, commanding an underwater recovery team and conducting undercover work in North Africa. This marked his "growing up," leading to a return home where he decided to take up a surgery residency in Denver, followed by academia in Georgia, private practice partnership in Indiana and then finally moving to Inverness, FL to practice surgery and and is now inevitably retired and enjoying being the patriarch of a wide-branching family tree. Today, at 87, he enjoys rounds of golf and researches biblical themes on creation versus science.Share with a friend, ask a question or recommend a topic/guest in the comments. Thanks for watching!
