The women of the American colonies, filling a need brought on by the boycott of British goods, began making their own cloth as an act of rebellion. Cotton, linen and wool were fabricated, many times in social events. The resulting cloth came to be known as homespun and was worn as a patriotic symbol for the fight against British tyranny. The Homespun movement was born.
