    Episode 407 - The NRA Tells Congress To Be Smart When It Comes To Hemp Beverages

    As we reported last week, the National Restaurant Association sent a letter to Congressional leaders asking them to delay by two years the forthcoming hemp product ban to provide the predictability operators need and to allow Congress the time to rethink its approach for a regulatory alternative that responsibly meets consumer demand. We are joined once again by Mike Whatley, the Vice President of State Affairs & Grassroots Advocacy at the National Restaurant Association to walk us through the issue and what the industry needs for our elected leaders. Additionally, Mike will stay with us and give us his take on the first half of 2026 and how the industry fared managing their issue portfolios across the fifty states. And we had another round of primary elections this week and the big winners were socialists - yes, you heard that correctly, socialists.     Episode 406 - Legislation to Quicken Union Election Process On The Brink Of Passage

    Legislation is pending in the U.S. Senate that would drastically speed up the process for organizing unions in the workplace. The bill has already passed the Republican-led House and could be on the senate floor any day. We’re joined once again by Ed Egee, VP of Government Relations and Workforce Development at the National Retail Federation to analyze the bill and the threats it poses to the industry as well as the broader shift of Republicans to more pro-labor policies. And Oklahoma voters fairly easily rejected a ballot measure this week to increase the minimum wage to $15/hr by 2029. At the center of the debate? The negative impact the measure would have on inflation and affordability. Could the table be turning on the narrative surrounding a key industry issue. We’ll discuss.     Episode 405 - Industry Faces Significant Setback On Credit Card Relief

    The industry has had a tough couple of weeks regarding its long-running feud with the banks and credit card companies coming up on the wrong end of a highly anticipated court decision and the veto pen. We’re joined once again by Dan Swanson, Counsel to the Merchants Payment Coalition to tell us what happened, why it happened, and more importantly, where do we go from here.     The primary election for Governor of California is next Tuesday and it's anyone's guess which two candidates will emerge to face off in November. We are joined by Nikki Laurenzo, the host and Executive Producer of Inside California Politics and the evening anchor of Fox40 News in Sacramento to give us the lay of the land and what we might expect from the results. And speaking of California, what ever happened to the Fast Food Council that captured so much industry attention not too long ago?     Episode 403 - One Fair Wage Hearing the Chicago Blues

    The industry got an unprecedented win in Colorado over the banking and credit card lobby with passage of legislation to prohibit interchange fees on sales taxes and tips. The bill is now on the governor's desk but its future is uncertain. If signed, could the momentum in this long-running battle have finally shifted? We’ll take a look. And the city of Chicago does a remarkable backtrack on its law eliminating the tip credit putting a two year freeze on further implementation. We’ll discuss how and why this happened and what impact it may have on the broader issue in other jurisdictions. And redistricting is at a fever pitch across the states as the US Supreme Court has effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act. What impact will this have in 2026 and beyond. We’ll discuss.
