“A Philosopher Dies When They Become a Preacher of Platitudes” | Roman Kobets on the True Vocation of Philosophy

Dear friends, a new episode of “Philosophical Community,” a project by the Sententiae Community, is here! ▪️ Host – Vlada Davidenko. ▪️ Guest – Roman Kobets, Ukrainian philosopher, PhD in Philosophy, Research Fellow at the H. S. Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, specializing in social and political philosophy, philosophy of law, and public policy. He is also a former adviser to the Prime Minister of Ukraine. Why do we keep searching for the “right people” instead of changing the rules by which the state operates? Can philosophy help us understand the reasons behind our society’s failures? And why is the philosopher’s task not to provide ready-made answers, but to question what seems self-evident? In this episode, we explore Roman Kobets’s unconventional intellectual journey – from studying Martin Heidegger’s fundamental ontology to working directly in the field of public policy. As it turns out, these seemingly distant areas are united by the fundamental problem of choice – from existential self-determination to the decisions that shape the future of an entire society. 🔹 Heidegger, Phenomenology, and Artificial Intelligence. Why is Heidegger’s philosophy so often misunderstood? Was he really opposed to science? And is artificial intelligence transforming the very way we perceive the world? 🔹 The State, Institutions, and Political Decision-Making. Why does replacing political elites not necessarily lead to social change? What makes the belief in a “savior” who can supposedly solve all the country’s problems so dangerous? And why does effective public policy depend not only on the intentions of decision-makers but also on the underlying logic of decision-making itself? 🔹 Citizenship, Democracy, and Responsibility. How is the political consciousness of Ukraine’s younger generation changing? Why is the demand that those in power explain their decisions a fundamental condition of democratic representation? 🔹 Philosophy and Society. What does contemporary Ukrainian philosophy lack most? Should philosophers directly influence public policy? And what is the social vocation of a philosopher in a country at war? This conversation is about the need to think beyond obvious explanations, critically reconsider established assumptions, and recognize the underlying conditions that make particular events and decisions possible. 🎧 We invite you to watch or listen the new episode!

“If We Are Not Free, What Are We Responsible For?” | Dmytro Sepetyi on Consciousness, Freedom, and Science

🎙️ Dear friends, a new episode of the “Philosophical Community” project by the Sententiae Community is out now! ▪️ Host – Vlada Davidenko.▪️ Guest – Dmytro Sepetyi, Ukrainian philosopher, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor at Zaporizhzhia State Medical and Pharmaceutical University, whose research focuses on the philosophy of mind, the mind–body problem, free will, philosophy of science, critical rationalism, and bioethics. This conversation explores one of the most challenging puzzles in contemporary philosophy: how can we fit a conscious and free human being into the picture of the world offered by the natural sciences? We discuss consciousness and the brain, materialism and dualism, free will and moral responsibility, artificial intelligence, and the limits of scientific explanation. We also consider why the more deeply we investigate consciousness, the more clearly we may come to recognize the limits of our own knowledge. 📚 We discuss: – Dmytro Sepetyi’s unconventional path from mathematics, programming, and social philosophy to the philosophy of mind;– why contemporary science still cannot provide a comprehensive answer to the question of what consciousness is;– physicalism, dualism, and the problem of the place of consciousness within the natural-scientific picture of the world;– where the boundary lies between a scientific worldview and scientism;– whether contemporary AI systems can be conscious and how we could possibly determine whether they are;– free will, the possibility of “doing otherwise,” and moral responsibility;– how algorithms, personalized advertising, and the manipulation of our desires are transforming the problem of human autonomy;– why skepticism about free will may have not only metaphysical but also social and political consequences;– consciousness as a key issue in the bioethical problem of determining human death;– Karl Popper, critical rationalism, and philosophy as a search for truth without claiming to possess it once and for all;– the current state and prospects of analytic philosophy in Ukraine. 🎧 Listen to the new episode of “Philosophical Community” – link in the first comment. 📺 The video version of the conversation is also available on our YouTube channel. We thank NONTHENSE for the musical arrangement of the project. See you in the next episodes of “Philosophical Community”! 🎙️

“From Myth to Logos Is a Dystopia” | Vadym Menzhulin on the Dangers of Pure Rationalism

🎙️ Dear friends, we are delighted to present a new episode of “Philosophical Community,” a project by the Sententiae Community! ▪️ Host – Vlada Davidenko, researcher and editor at Archivum Sententiarum. ▪️ Guest – Vadym Menzhulin, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, historian of philosophy, and scholar specializing in philosophical biography, the history of psychology, and psychoanalysis. ▪️ In this episode, we explore how a philosopher’s life becomes part of their philosophy and why the history of philosophy cannot be reduced to a history of established ideas and concepts. Beginning with Vadym Menzhulin’s personal journey into philosophy – through music, jazz, and chess – we move on to discuss academic philosophy, psychoanalysis, the biographical approach, and the complexities of historical inquiry. 📚 In this episode, we discuss: ▪️ whether a philosopher’s way of thinking, academic work, and way of life should be interconnected; ▪️ jazz and chess as intellectual practices and their influence on the practice of philosophizing; ▪️ the relationship between academic philosophy and free intellectual creativity – and why philosophers sometimes need to “jazz things up a little”; ▪️ psychoanalysis, Freud, and Jung – and how an interest in myth and the unconscious led to questions of philosophical biography; ▪️ the biographical approach in the history of philosophy: what changes when, behind a seemingly complete philosophical system, we recognize not an abstract “author” but a human being whose views develop, change, contradict one another, and are shaped by lived experience; ▪️ autobiography, ego-history, and oral history as ways of restoring the open-endedness and internal dynamics of the history of thought; ▪️ the figure of Ivan Sikorsky – a Kyiv-based psychiatrist, psychologist, and researcher whose biography raises questions about scientific achievements, racial anthropology in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and his disgraceful role in the Beilis trial; ▪️ how historians can approach controversial figures of the past without turning historical inquiry into either justification or a final verdict; ▪️ why the history of philosophy should leave room for contradictions, alternative interpretations, and future generations of researchers. 📺 Watch the video version on the Sententiae Community YouTube channel! We thank NONTHENSE for supporting our project and Roman for his continued assistance with sound production and editing. See you in the next episode of “Philosophical Community”!

Metamodernism: A New Era or a Myth? | Maksym Nestelieiev on His New Book

📚 Hello, Sententiae Community! We invite you to watch a new episode of the Sententiae Community podcast in our “Books” series, dedicated to metamodernism, its theoretical foundations, and the ways it helps us understand contemporary culture. ▪️ Host – Vlada Davidenko, editor and researcher at the Sententiae Community. ▪️ Guest – Maksym Nestelieiev, Ukrainian literary scholar, translator, PhD in Philology, cultural critic and columnist, and researcher of American postmodernism and contemporary literature. 📖 At the heart of our conversation is Maksym Nestelieiev’s new monograph, Metamodernism: Between Outdated Irony and New Sincerity. In the book, the author examines the concepts proposed by 37 scholars of metamodernism, exploring the diversity of theoretical interpretations, the contradictions between them, and the possibilities of applying these approaches to contemporary literature and culture. 📚 In this episode, we discuss: ▪️ Maksym Nestelieiev’s intellectual journey from studying Ukrainian modernism to researching American postmodernism and metamodernism; ▪️ the relationship between translation and literary scholarship, the challenges of working with complex texts by American writers, and the practice of close reading; ▪️ the problem of cultural periodization: do modernism, postmodernism, and metamodernism truly succeed one another, and how justified is the idea of clear boundaries between cultural eras? ▪️ the concept of oscillation in metamodernist theory, its explanatory potential, and why its original proponents later reconsidered it; ▪️ the methodological challenges of defining metamodernism, the diversity of its theoretical interpretations, and the problem of establishing criteria for distinguishing metamodern cultural phenomena from others; ▪️ the relationship between theory and artistic practice, including the deliberate application of metamodernist concepts in contemporary cinema; ▪️ the changing role of irony in contemporary culture, its relationship with new sincerity, and the possibility of combining critical distance with empathy, compassion, and a renewed commitment to values.

A Ukraine We Don’t Know: The Qur’an, Crimean Philosophers, and the Islamic Intellectual Tradition | Mykhailo Yakubovych

🎙️ Dear friends, we are delighted to present a new episode of Philosophical Community, a project by the Sententiae Community! ▪️ Host – Vlada Davidenko.▪️ Guest – Mykhailo Yakubovych, a Ukrainian scholar of Islam, Orientalist, and translator, Associate Professor at the University of Freiburg, author of the first complete Ukrainian translation of the meanings of the Qur’an, and one of the leading scholars of the philosophical and manuscript heritage of the Crimean Khanate. This time, we discuss Islam as an intellectual tradition and explore a part of the history of philosophy in Ukraine that still remains largely unknown. Together with Mykhailo Yakubovych, we discuss: 🔹 his intellectual journey from Ostroh to the study of Islamic philosophy, as well as the multiconfessional intellectual world of Volhynia; 🔹 why Islam should not be understood as a closed and homogeneous tradition, and the place of Ukraine, Crimea, and the Northern Black Sea region in its history; 🔹 the Ukrainian translation of the Qur’an and whether there is, in fact, a fundamental difference between “translating the Qur’an” and “translating its meanings”; 🔹 the challenges of developing a Ukrainian language of Islamic philosophy: how Arabic philosophical concepts can be translated and how to strike a balance between precision and accessibility; 🔹 the philosophical tradition of the Crimean Khanate – its thinkers, manuscripts, schools, and intellectual networks, which allow us to see Crimea not as a periphery but as part of the broader world of Islamic thought; 🔹 and, finally, how our understanding of the history of philosophy in Ukraine might change if we restore its Muslim intellectual heritage to the picture. A conversation about translations and manuscripts, Avicenna and Crimean philosophers, the boundaries of what we call “philosophy” – and about Ukraine as a meeting place of different intellectual traditions. 🎥 Listen to the new episode of Philosophical Community!
