Never in the History of the World

Following the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Americans struggled against the devastating realities of the Great Depression. Hoping to alleviate poverty, unemployment, and desperation, Jews embraced Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his promise of a "New Deal." The advent of World War II brought the Depression to an end, but sparked global fascism and antisemitism at an unprecedented scale. Over 550,000 Jews joined the Armed Forces in an effort to defeat Nazism abroad and earn the respect of their fellow Americans at home. In the aftermath of the war, dormant tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union resurfaced. Featuring Deborah Dash Moore and Tony Michels, and hosted by AJHS Executive Director Gemma R. A Nation of Inconsistencies

Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, approximately two million Jews fled Eastern Europe for the United States. After entering through Ellis Island, many made their new homes in the tenement buildings of New York's Lower East Side, where they contended with dire living conditions, strenuous factory jobs, and linguistic and cultural challenges. Several Jewish philanthropists, including the poet Emma Lazarus, dedicated their resources to help the newcomers acclimate to American society. As wealth inequality and antisemitism soared, Jews embraced the labor movement to improve their lives as American citizens. The Rest of Mankind

In 1654, the first Jews arrived in New Amsterdam. Sephardic refugees from Recife, Brazil, they came to the Dutch-controlled colony to escape the Spanish/Portuguese Inquisition. These 23 individuals became the anchor of a fledging Jewish community in the colonies, and over the next century and beyond, American Jews found their place in society, commerce, and soon, revolution. From patriots to loyalists, this episode featuring historians Laura Arnold Leibman and Adam Jortner kicks off our new podcast series with stories pulled from some of the oldest and rarest materials from the AJHS archives. A Leap Into the Unknown

During the American Civil War, the majority of Jews supported the Union, due to larger populations living in the North. Much like the American population at large, however, Jews in America were divided in their allegiances, representing a small but significant minority in the South as the Confederacy waged its war. Jews fiercely fought on both sides of the conflict, but not without facing the same antisemitism that had been a stain on the country before its division, most notably through General Grant's Order No. 11, which called for the expulsion of Jews from multiple southern communities. The Unionists

The film, television, and theater industries were represented by some of the largest unions in the United States, and in the late 1940s, with the full cooperation of Screen Actors Guild President Ronald Reagan, organizations like the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Values sought to root out what they deemed the communist threat in entertainment. Unions from other industries were also targeted, and a narrative that communist infiltration was the true root cause of contemporary labor conflicts was embraced by a number of American politicians. The Hollywood Ten

In November 1947, ten Hollywood writers and directors were cited for contempt of court for their refusal to testify before HUAC. Criminal charges were issued against the group that would become known as "the Hollywood Ten," and the first systematic Hollywood blacklist had begun. Of the ten, six were Jewish - John Howard Lawson, Herbert Biberman, Alvah Bessie, Albert Maltz, Samuel Ornitz, and Lester Cole - as were many of the studio executives who voted to blacklist them. The Professors

College professors and other educators were among those targeted by anti-communists, but the search for Communist Party members in the U.S. education system began much earlier. The so-called "Red-ucators" were among the first deemed subversives, and Harvard University, City College of New York, and many other schools were rocked by hundreds of subpoenas, calling them to testify in front of special committees that were formed to weed out communists in education. Morris Schappes, an English professor in the CUNY system and member of the American Communist Party, was one of these educators, and became a prominent symbol of the quest to purge school systems of subversives. The Defendants

On April 5, 1951, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death under the Espionage Act of 1917. The couple was accused of spying for the Soviet Union and providing classified information about nuclear weapons, radar, sonar, and jet propulsion engines. The trial, which was presided over by Judge Irving Robert Kaufman, captured international attention. Narrated by Rebecca Naomi Jones and featuring Martin J. Los Angeles

In 1978 Bill and his wife Isa left New York City for Los Angeles, first living in Venice Beach before settling in the vibrant Jewish community of Pico Robertson. After raising a family and having a prolific career, Bill considers Los Angeles to be his home. Alongside his project-based photography, Bill also documented his daily Jewish life of raising two sons with Isa, as well as the lives of the friends and community around him – including our host Ruthie, who moved with her family from NYC sometime after Bill migrated. As Bill became more enmeshed in the Jewish community of Los Angeles, his photography was enlisted to support the work of the United Jewish Appeal and the movement to free Soviet Jews. Several of Bill's images depicting modern Jewish life can also be found at the Skirball Museum. Join Bill and Ruthie for our final episode, as they consider the photographs that captured their lives in Los Angeles.
