#107: Will Balen govern better than he raps?

Nepal held its historic election on March 5, and today, on March 27 , former Kathmandu mayor/rapper/structural engineer, 35-year-old Balendra Shah aka Balen will be sworn in as the country’s prime minister, marking a generational break. #MillennialRepresent. In this episode, we speak with journalist/researcher/urban studies graduate/rap music को ज्ञाता friend Nikita Tripathi for some chunaab chirfaar and discuss our hopes for a new Nepal. We hope the new guard—overwhelmingly male (and as populist as they come) — which has promised a “Nepal 2.0,” will respect the constitution, mend its old ways by ensuring equitable and meaningful representation by making room for more women and people from marginalised to thrive in national politics. Also, please less theatrics and more work and room for dialogue. #105 Guff Gaff with Bunu Dhungana

Boju Bajai in conversation with artist Bunu Dhungana. In this episode we talk about her journey as a multimedia artist and curator to explore and question the world around her. Bunu’s background in sociology informs her photographic work, questioning notions of gender and patriarchy. In May 2025, Bunu curated ‘some things in the belly’, a multimedia exhibition, which delves into the divides and connections shaping mother-daughter relationships across generations. Bunu was a 2020/2021 Visiting Artist Fellow at Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, Harvard University. She is associated with photo.circle in Kathmandu. This episode was recorded in July 2025. Where did Wave magazine go?

Wave was the most popular English language magazine among young Nepali readers in the 1990s and the 2000s. Launched in 1994, Wave became an instant hit because of its fresh take on music, fashion, youth culture and the concerns of young urban Nepalis. And remember the iconic lyrics book with guitar chords (this was when the internet wasn’t as accessible) and the glossy poster of international musicians that came with the magazine every month! It was also one of the very few and first Nepali media outlets to have a vibrant online presence through its website. Sadly, much of it is no longer available in the public domain.In this first episode of our brand new series called “Rewind with Boju Bajai” we sat down with Wave magazine’s founding editor Yubakar, assistant editor Tsering Choden, and Shashank Shrestha, who interned there. We asked them about their time at Wave, their favorite/most memorable cover stories, and what they most fondly recall about working at Nepal’s most iconic youth magazine. #17 Stop calling us cheli beti

When will the politicization of women's bodies end? Last month it was former law minister Sher Bahadur Tamang's sexist remarks on Nepali girls studying in Bangladesh. It is convenient for the state to call us cheli beti because once they refer to us as citizens they have to give us equal rights.
