Akbar and Birbal's First Meeting (अकबर बीरबल की पहली मुलाक़ात)

Everyone knows tons of stories of how Akbar and Birbal made a formidable pair and their witty stories are quite famous. But we bring to you the real story of how Akbar and Birbal really met the first time. On a bright summer day, Akbar decided to go hunting with his companions but they were unable to trace any wild animals in the woods. They were all tired and thirsty so Akbar decided to visit the nearest village in search of water. On their way to the village, they found a young boy, whose name was Mahesh Das, carrying a pile of woods. Akbar asked him if there is any lake nearby and the boy happily agreed to take them to the lake. The boy had no idea who Akbar was, so he cross-questioned him when Akbar asked the little boy what his name was. Akbar and his companions reached the lake and finally quenched their thirst. Akbar gave a ring to that boy, asked him to meet him when he grows up and left. Upon looking at the ring, the boy realized who Akbar was and started to run after his troop but they were far gone. After years, when Mahesh Das grew older, he decided to visit Akbar's court. After a long journey, he reached the court and saw Akbar in between a court meeting so he decided to stand in a corner. Akbar asked his fellow noblemen "What is the most beautiful flower on earth?" Some answered rose, some lotus, some jasmine but Mahesh Das suggested that in his opinion it is the cotton flower. The entire court started laughing at his answer and told that cotton flowers are colorless and got no odor. Mahesh Das then explained how useful cotton flowers are. Cotton grown from this flower is used to make clothes for people in summer as well as in winter. Akbar was impressed with his witty answer and asked his name. Mahesh Das then introduced himself and referred to the time when he met King Akbar. Akbar then happily appointed him as one of the noblemen in his court. Later, Mahesh Das came to be known as Birbal. When Akbar’s guru paid him a visit from Mecca for a few days, it starts to intrigue Akbar to find out the details of Birbal’s guru who has tutored such a wise person. So when he questioned Birbal about his master’s whereabouts, Birbal informed him that his guru always remained silent and never goes out to any place. Akbar requested Birbal to introduce him to his guru. On the way back home, Birbal saw a humble woodcutter and pleased by him, Birbal converted his attire to that of a Brahmin and made him sit on the pedestal of a big temple and directed him to remain silent under all circumstances. When Birbal brought Akbar to meet the monk, Akbar decided to test the monk and lure him with gold. But following Birbal’s directions, monk paid no heed to Akbar’s repeated offers and continued to meditate. Angrily Akbar left the monk alone thinking him to be a fool. Guru Gobind Rai Te Bridh Mata

Guru Gobind Rai was born in the city of Patna in the state of Bihar. Gobind Rai; A divine soul sent from the heavens to help this earth. People always noticed that when he played with his friends, even though he was physically stronger, he was always kind to everyone. He was always having fun, joking around and he laughed all the time. And there were so many games he liked to play with his friends. Sometimes he also liked to do mischief. Near his house, there was an old woman who spun yarn and she used a wheel to spin raw cotton into yarn balls. One day Gobind Rai decided to make a little mischief, and he snuck up behind her chair. She couldn’t see him and suddenly he knocked her basket of yarn balls on the ground and ran away. The balls of yarn had taken ages to spin and got all dirty and dusty. So the old woman got really angry with him. She picked up a big stick and waved it wildly in her hand while shouting at Gobind Rai, "I've been working on that basket of yarn all day. How dare you knock it down!" She chased him, thinking she would give him a sound beating with the stick. She yelled, "I don't care who your parents are, I'll teach you some manners! Come here boy!" She almost caught him. But he just ran away faster not letting her catch him. He used to do this prank on her until she got fed up. She went to Gobind Rai’s home and began complaining to Mata Gujri Ji, his mother. She whined, "Your son! He keeps sneaking into my workroom and scattering all my yarn. All I have is that yarn. And he does it all the time. I'm so miserable. He must stop this. I have no peace of mind." Mata Gujri was a kind and wise woman, and she could see the old woman was really in distress. So she gave the woman some clothes and some money, saying, "Here, take these. It's the least I can do for you." The old woman was very poor and she was surprised and touched by Mata Gujri. It was not often she was given clothes and money. Instantly she became very happy and changed her tune, "Well after all he is just a child. Mata Ji, we shouldn't mind if he does a little mischief. It's alright, he can still play with me..." Mata Gujri herself was ever trusting and could never stay mad at her son. She thought, "He is sent by God so I have to accept what he does. He will protect humanity." After the old woman had gone home Gobind Rai came home from playing. He clearly had something on his mind, and he shared it with his mother, "Mata, you know that woman today with the yarn? Well, when I knocked it over it wasn't her yarn that was being destroyed. It was the stains of her soul that were being destroyed. Her poverty had to be taken away. She was poor before, but after knocking over the yarn look how rich she is. It was destiny for you to give her all the nice clothes and money." Everyone who heard this story was amazed that this young boy, not much older than a toddler could say such things. His grandmother knew better though. She thought, "He's a real Guru. He is bringing all the wisdom he brought with him from the heavens." After this, the old woman began visiting the Guru's house more often. She began joining the Sangat for early morning prayers. She joined the company of the saints and her life became very blessed. This is how Gobind Rai helped people. Even when he was annoying or bothering someone, he was actually helping them. Even when he was mischievous, it always turned out better for others. On one hand, this old woman was blessed with wealth on this earth. But she was even more enriched by the blessings of the heavens. Her spirit had been touched by the Guru. Amrit Sarovar Di Sthapana (Guru Ram Das Ji)

The City of Amritsar (literally "pool of nectar") was originally called Ramdaspur (Guru Ram Das's city) and Chakk Ramdas, or Chakk Guru, or simply Guru Ka Chakk. The habitation was started by Bhai Jetha (the future Guru Ram Das) when Guru Amar Das asked him to establish a new colony of Sikhs. Dukh Bhanjani Beri is a historic Beri tree in the Sri Harmandir Sahib complex associated with Bibi Rajni Ji. Bibi Rajni was the daughter Duni Chand Khatri who was a rich landlord of the town of Patti. Duni Chand had five daughters. All were beautiful and talented. He had a big ego and one day he asked his daughters, "Tell me who provides you food and shelter?" The elder four daughters readily said that their father was providing them with everything. But the youngest daughter, Bibi Rajni replied, "It is God that provides for everyone". Hearing this, Duni Chand was enraged, he married Rajni to a leper. But Bibi Rajni did not mind, she accepted the leper as her husband and served him with great love. One day, Bibi Rajni procured a basket, put her husband into it, and tenderly bore him on her head to places of pilgrimage in the hope of curing him of his malady. Wandering, Bibi Rajni arrived footsore and weary at the very spot which the third Guru had indicated and the fourth Guru had marked out as the site of his pool of nectar (Amritsar), and there laid down her burden. Bibi Rajni, left her husband under a ber tree in the cool and grateful proximity of the water, while she departed to get a meal. The leper, left alone, saw two crows fighting. One had a piece of bread in its mouth, which the other tried to snatch. While they were struggling, the bread fell into the pool. Both birds swooped down upon it. The crows reappeared with their colour changing from black to white. Seeing this he concluded that pool did not contain ordinary water, so he made up his mind to bathe in the pond. Bibi Rajni's husband crawled to the pond and went in. When he came out he was astonished to find himself healthy, he was no longer a leper. He walked as a young man and again sat under the shade of the Ber tree. When Bibi Rajni returned from langar she was unable to recognize her husband. Bibi Rajni's belief was, that the stranger before her had killed her husband, and now presented himself as an unholy lover in her helplessness and bereavement. Bibi Rajni still remained skeptical. She and her husband appeared before Guru Ram Das. After compliments, Bibi Rajni said, "I am a virtuous woman. I left my leprous husband here and he has disappeared. This man whom I know not, claims to be him, but I believe he is some deceitful person who has a design on my virtue.” Guru Ram Das smiled and said, “This pool is in fact supreme among all places of pilgrimages. If you do not believe this, see this man is affected with leprosy in one finger. Let him dip it into the water, and you shall see the result. And whoever bathes in this tank shall obtain balm for his wounded spirit!" The late leprous cripple put his finger into the water and it was immediately healed. Bibi Rajni was doubly convinced that it was, in reality, her husband who had accosted her, and that the pool possessed miraculous virtues. The ber tree, still on the spot, is that under which she left her crippled husband. The tree, under which the leper was sitting, came to be known as Dukh Bhanjani Beri as it is said to relieve the pains and afflictions of people. Every day, thousands of people enter the Amritsar sarovar near the Beri.
