A visit to Nanaimo's repair café

The repair café movement has returned to Nanaimo. Volunteers came together Saturday May 30 to look at more than 100 household items in need of a fix. The event at St Andrew’s Church in the Old City Quarter featured tables for small appliances, electronics, furniture, jewellery, bike repairs and more. It was the second repair cafe held in Nanaimo this year, with a third planned for June 13th. There are repair cafés worldwide. The global movement aims to save items from landfill, and to help people acquire the skills to fix items on their own. Midcoast Morning paid a visit to the event, and spoke with lead organizer Stenson Lindal, as well as attendees and volunteers among which was Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Tamara Kronis. Nanaimo budget passes setting 8% property tax hike

Nanaimo homeowners are looking at an eight per cent property tax hike after council passed the provisional financial plan. This will bring property taxes for the average home in Nanaimo to $2,860 next year. Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog says that the city is growing, putting an increased demand on the city services, and council did what it could to control the tax increase. “I appreciate that nobody wants to pay more. But having said that, we all want to need our services," he said. "Imagine a city where you couldn't flush the toilet, or turn on the water, or drive on the streets or recreate in its parks.” Some of the key drivers in the budget are hiring additional firefighters and RCMP officers as well a $1.3 million increase to maintain and replace aging infrastructure in 2024, such as phase two of the Midtown Water Supply Project. ★ Support this podcast ★

Four Nanaimoites honoured for contributions to community

At a ceremony at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre Thursday, Laurie Grubb, Joshua Waltman, Amanda Hall, and Peter Sinclair were presented with the King Charles the third coronation medal. Last May it was announced that 30 thousand such medals would be awarded across Canada to individuals who have made a significant contribution to their country, province, region, or community. Bus service extending to Hullo ferry terminal

Passengers looking for a ride to the Hullo Ferries and Helijet terminals in the Nanaimo Port Authority will have a public transit option starting on Sunday January 7. BC Transit’s #25 Ferry Shuttle will be extending its service to the port three times a day, at 10:35 a.m., 3:17 p.m. and 6:59 p.m. The new route does mean that the bus will no longer be serving Vancouver Island University and to help keep the buses running on time they will no longer wait for delayed ferries.
