The Dark Side of Municipal Affairs: Part 1

Welcome to Municipal Affairs, I’m Christopher Brown. Today we are launching a new series of episodes on Municipal Affairs that will be airing in July. The Dark Side of Municipal Politics - Abuse and Harassment in Municipal Politics. We will explore the dark side of municipal politics, with a particular focus on the abuse and harassment faced by municipal officials. In today's episode, we shine a spotlight on the unique challenges confronted by female municipal leaders as they navigate their roles as elected officials. These leaders can often encounter an array of abusive behaviours, or harassment from both the public and from within the municipal sector, making their professional journeys particularly arduous. Our discussion today will delve into the personal experiences of three remarkable leaders all of who have in one way or another faced such adversities head-on. We will hear their stories, understand the nature and extent of the harassment they've endured, and learn about the strategies they have employed to combat these issues. The questions guiding our conversation are designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the landscape of abuse and harassment in municipal politics. Joining us for this insightful roundtable discussion are the former Deputy Mayor of The Town of Witless Bay, Lorna Yard, Councillor for the Town of Alymer, Kathryn Desrosiers, and Mayor for the Town of Georgina, Margaret Quirk These leaders bring a wealth of experience and resilience to our conversation. Welcome to the Political Trenches: Local Government At Work. Our guest today is Union of Municipalities New Brunswick Executive Director Dan Murphy. Dan is a dedicated leader with extensive experience in both government and non-profit sectors, focused on building strong communities. As the Executive Director of the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick, he advocates for the priorities of 57 member municipalities. Before this role, Dan held senior positions with federal and provincial cabinet ministers and served as Executive Director of the N.B. Non-Profit Housing Association. He also volunteers as treasurer for the Housing Hub of New Brunswick and serves on the NB College of Pharmacists’ public committee. Dan holds degrees from St. Thomas University and Carleton University and Resides in Fredericton, NB.
