Prey Mode: why predator vs prey discourse is everywhere online

From the viral ‘canthal tilt’ filter and memes asking girls to declare whether they’re ‘cat pretty, bunny pretty, fox pretty or deer pretty’ to recent Burberry and Stella Macartney campaigns, predator vs prey discourse is everywhere online. We unpack these recent trends, tracing their history back to incel looksmaxxing forums and how this all plays into the onrush of girl-coded memes taking over our feeds. Hosted on Acast. A FUTURE WORLD: Where next for social media?

In this A Future World podcast, hosted by Dazed Digital’s Editor Anna Cafolla, popstar Charli XCX and writer Jia Tolentino talk about the pitfalls of the glossy, consistent, economically-driven platforms that we embed ourselves in every day; the dullness, and inaccuracy, of the pervasive currency of authenticity on social media; and the passionate culture and pace of new internet-forged genres like Hyperpop. They also gush about the platform that feels at once like it’s the future of social media, as well as a space for freedom more akin to what social media websites used to feel like: TikTok, which Tolentino describes as “genuinely anarchic in the way the early internet was, and certainly in ways Instagram and Twitter aren’t.” For Tolentino, the conversation with Charli is a meeting of kindred spirits who “use social media the way that we live in the world”: “I think the way that both of us are attracted to social media and to using the internet (is) fundamentally rooted in an approach to the world, which is an energy for being around people. I think both of us have a real hunger for the world, and for creativity, that is reflected in the way we use social media.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A FUTURE WORLD: Where Next for the Fashion Industry

In this A Future World podcast, hosted by Dazed Digital’s Fashion Features Editor Emma Davidson, Bethany Williams and AGF Hydra talk about navigating the fashion industry and finding your voice within it; aligning their brand values in tandem with what the climate emergency demands; how their labels might provide a blueprint for others wanting to set up new systems for their brands with less wasteful production; and how the digitisation of fashion weeks is subverting the industry’s long-standing aura of exclusivity. Has social media become a manifestation tool?

“Manifestation is intention-setting through focusing your thoughts on the desired outcome until it happens. It’s part of psychological thought that became popularised by books like The Secret, before taking over popular culture in 2020. Since then, there’s been a growing fascination around how algorithms, the internet, and even AI can be tools for manifestation. Over the summer, Gabi Abrão Tweeted: “Everything I have in my life, I once reblogged on Tumblr. The internet is a rapid manifestation tool. The images and essences you worship here lay on an altar that determines your future.”” In her article, The rise of the ‘manifinsta’: how social media became a manifestation tool, writer Laura Pitcher explores the phenomenon of "manifinstas"—social media accounts that young people use primarily to manifest jobs, relationships, and an overall improved life. This trend aligns with the growing popularity of astrology in culture, reflected in music of Ariana Grande and film’s like Tarot (2024). This week, we delve into the roots of the desire for predetermined outcomes and discuss whether social media should function as a tool for self-optimisation. This episode is hosted by Halima Jibril, Elliot Hoste, and Laura Pitcher, with research by Solomon Pace McCarrick. It was edited by Oliver Gale. The executive producer is Lauren Ford. Is the age of hedonistic hyper-consumption over?

In July 2024, writer and artist August Lamm shared her prediction for the future on X: “I’m calling it right now: abstention is the next big thing. Sobriety, celibacy, digital minimalism, dumb phones, religion. The age of hedonistic hyper-consumption is over. We’re moving into a new peaceful age marked by moderation and self-discipline. I can’t wait.” Lamm, who has been without an iPhone for two and a half years, wasn’t basing her prediction on trends she’d seen online (she doesn’t have a phone, remember?). Instead, she expressed her desire for a shift in culture, grounded in the belief that we have reached peak hyper-consumption. From Brat being synonymous with hedonistic indulgence, to Stanley cup fads and excessive skincare hauls, to Oxford’s Word of the Year, “brain rot”, a term describing the negative effects of consuming low-quality or trivial online content, 2024 was undeniably a year of excess. As we enter the new year, however, a cultural shift seems to be emerging. People are challenging their consumption habits by participating in low-buy or no-buy years, where they refrain from shopping for an entire year. Others are turning to digital detoxes in an effort to rebuild their attention spans, productivity and overall well-being. In this episode, hosts Halima Jibril and Elliot Hoste are joined by Lamm to unpack our addiction to consumption, our scarcity mentality, and whether we’re simply swinging from one extreme to another – from hedonistic hyper-consumption to complete restriction. Is this the beginning of a world without pleasure, or could moderation finally offer the balance we’ve been craving? A FUTURE WORLD: NFTs – The Death Or The Democratisation Of Art?

This A Future World episode about NFTs is hosted by former Dazed Arts Editor Ashleigh Kane and the guests are Dee Goens, the co-creator of NFT Marketplace Zora, and Spike editor and arts writer Dean Kissick. Does the rise of the NFT spell the end of the internet being “free” as we know it? What does democratisation, and decentralisation, of the art world actually look like? And why are some people so mad about it? Kissick and Goens tackle these questions and lift lift the veil on how NFTs work, as well as what they actually spell for the art world and all the adjacent audio-visual culture we experience through the lens of the internet. For Goens, “it is 100% revolutionising the understanding of how we own information on the internet. You can now have a provable, canonical first instance of that iconic meme, or that GIF, and the value that that creates over its lifespan can actually accrue back to the provable creator of that meme, (or) that GIF.” For Kissick, there’s more of an open question about how much things will change within the more storied corners of the art world. “I don't think it's going to lead to total democratisation of the arts. (But if) you haven't found yourself where you want to be, or you have no interest in going through a well-trodden path, you're just free to do your own thing. And that's good, right?” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Kendrick Lamar and the politics of hate

Since the Super Bowl, Kendrick Lamar has been all we’ve been able to think about. From his effortlessly cool bootcut jeans, his reimagining of Uncle Sam as the incomparable Samuel L. Jackson to the continuous jabs he made at Drake throughout his 13-minute performance – Lamar has been crowned by the public as thee professional hater. He even says it himself on Euphoria, his first full diss track aimed at Drake, calling himself “the biggest hater.” Over the last year, the general public has revelled in Lamar’s pettiness, celebrating his commitment to the art of the grudge. For many, Lamar inspires them to be better haters. But what kinds of hate are most celebrated in our society, and what depictions are condemned? When did everything get so weird?

From the middenning of mass culture to AI upturning our perceived reality and conspiracy theories hitting the mainstream, a lot of things formerly thought to be marginal, fringe and countercultural are now common consumption. At the same time, there seems to be this pervasive sense of weirdness in the air, which is apparent in the content we share, the memes we consume and a general shift towards the supernatural, the paranormal and occult. The Great X-odus: why are so many people leaving Twitter?

Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter (and renamed it X) the platform has become inundated with right-wing rhetoric, sparking questions about whether X played a direct role in putting Donald Trump back in the White House. Recently, celebrities such as Lizzo and publishers like The Guardian have posted impassioned statements explaining their decision to leave X. And many people are flocking to Bluesky, a Twitter lookalike which gained more than one million new users in a week.
