Finland’s Living Heritage (Winter Seine Fishing | Lake Puruvesi): In conversation with Noora Huusari from Snowchange Cooperative

Two themes (sustainable fishing and biocultural heritage) guided this conversation. Here's what to expect in this episode... Introducing our guest, Noora Huusari and what got her interested in Snowchange Cooperative? The traditional practice of winter seine fishing in Finland. How old is this practice? 1300 since the first written record. The oldest fishing net in the world was found in Eastern Finland, and it was over 10,000 years old! This is not the cultural heritage of some remote location in Finland. It’s our heritage as a species – our biological cultural heritage (BCH) and our interconnectedness with nature. Here’s an article from Nature Conservation on why does this matter. What makes Finland’s lake Puruvesi so special and two short films on the winter seiners of Puruvesi. How to keep the traditional practice alive and the challenge of operating a small-scale fisheries program. The average catch this season was 250 kg and the team is on the ice once a week. Remember that it’s winter seining, which means that our climate action or inaction influences how long this practice continues. A crispy vendace that is endemic to lake Puruvesi, which gave it a specialized European Commission label: Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Letty made a mistake and said that this fish has the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) label, but the correct label is PGI. Only two Finnish products have this PGI label. The other product is the rye crust pie with lingonberries. For more information about these labels, see the Finnish Food Authority. You cannot find this fish anywhere in the world. Are Finns aware of this special heritage of Finland? A string of micro conversations about the current fish supply chain in Finland, the lack of support for the local fish and the fishing community, our inability to tell a wild fish from a cultivated one, and the ongoing battle with the salmon farms in Norway. The global concern about food security and some random thoughts about making the connections locally through low-impact practices, such as winter seine fishing. The Yukon Connection

TravelCurators: A service project in loving memory of Frazer

I am resurrecting this podcast, Arctic HOWLs, which was paused indefinitely after the death of my best friend, Frazer. The initial purpose of this podcast was to capture the essence of the Arctic habitat of wildlife and locals with a focus on Arctic Canada and Finland. It is now a part of my ongoing tribute to Frazer’s ubiquitous presence, which includes my website (TravelCurators), a free service offer, a fictional story about the Frazden School of Boundless Joy, and any future endeavors related to giving B9 tokens. Two years ago, two kind Canadian souls (much indebted, Cara Moore and Anthony Mayne) helped me and my two best friends (Frazer and Denvor) start my long-awaited journey to the Yukon. I want to thank Cara and Anthony for supporting me and dedicate this episode to them. Our Canadian journey started in Edmonton, and it took us to Northern British Columbia (BC) and Québec (QC). A memorable 5300-kilometer road trip from BC to QC with Denvor still alive and Frazer's ashes was repeated this month as Denvor and I came back to Alberta (Calgary this time) to say hello to old friends and make new ones. Frazer lived a good 16 years, which isn't too bad for a medium-sized dog. Hoping that Denvor can celebrate his 16th birthday on Oct 24 and eventually rest with his brother in Alberta. The Frazden school of boundless joy turns 106

Mun Suomeni: Hyvää Itsenäisyyspäivää! The second episode of season 2 is hosted by Aaranya Susipetonen, an ex-MeriPelle (SAR Systems) who was a student of David Bohm and Newt Scamander. She has a doctorate in Magizoology and has written a textbook on Thestrals and Occamies. She is currently in Sodankylä (Lapland) to write her second textbook. As we celebrate the 106th founding day of Frazden, Aaranya shares the origins of the four houses of our SARtastic beasts (MeriPelle, MeriKotka, MeriMies, and MeriMetso). The deathly hallows at Old Crow and self-inquiry with Prof. Wanderson

In this episode of season 2, Aaranya Susipetonen questions Prof. Scamander about misdirecting her research on Occamies and Thestrals when she was at Old Crow, YT. A long explanation ensues about Copernicus' prediction related to the chief healer and the founders of the Frazden school. Aaranya learns about Prof. Wanderson, the founder of the MeriMies house, and his immense contribution to the muggle and magical world. MeriPelle gets a spot award (100 points), so you might hear a few seconds of the house song, Pohjola by Olli Halonen. Northern trails of Newfoundland and Labrador with WJ Long

In the last episode, Aaranya Susipetonen introduced us to the founder of the MeriKotka house (DJ Bohm). In this episode, she looks back at how the founder of her MeriPelle house explored the trails of Wayeeses in the far north. As she reads an excerpt from his book, Northern Trails (1905), she admires the courage of her MeriPelle founder to stand alone and view Wayeeses through a different lens. Copernicus’ couplet revelation by Prof. Tahtiavain

[Some content in French] Scene 7 starts with one side of a conversation between Prof. Tahtiavain and Ogilvie. It’s a tough year for Ogilvie because he is grieving the loss of his youngest son, who died in Jan 1895. Despite the pain, Ogilvie must return to the Yukon in Oct 1895. Will he be able to travel with Prof. Tahtiavain in Dec? Fast forward to 1976 where Aaranya is reading an 1898 report by Ogilvie that’s written in French. She had read an 1899 report by Arthur St. Cyr, but that was an easy read because the paper was in English. Aaranya is obviously struggling and mispronouncing so many words that native French speakers probably want her to stop reading. Before Ogilvie’s report, she had started reading Les Anciens Canadiens par Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, but she was able to get to only some part of a verse on the title page – that’s what you hear at the start of this episode. She will read this book someday. Scene 8 is a brief conversation between Prof. Scamander and Aaranya. After this conversation, Aaranya takes a break from French by revisiting two papers by Tempelman-Kluit (1979 and 2012) before her trek to Mount St. Cyr, northwest of Quiet Lake. In this episode of season 2, Prof. Scamander is curious how Aaranya knew where to find the next clue related to the deathly hallows. She thanks Prof. Longbottom and Ted Irving for this paleomagnetic clue near the Quiet Lake batholith and the Yukon-Tanana terrane. Aaranya reads a 1976 paper to get a sense of the stratigraphy of the area and start exploring the anomalies in the Pelly mountains. As this is a fictional setup, expect Aaranya to go on a tangent to set the stage for the next few episodes.
