Breaking Bad

Holy Audacity

The Beginning of Wisdom

The Book of Proverbs is one of the most unique books in the entire Bible. It doesn’t tell stories or recount history or includes any commandments. No, the book of Proverbs contains 31 chapters dedicated entirely to wisdom. So what is wisdom exactly? And more importantly, how does anyone obtain such a thing? According to Proverbs 9, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This week we’ll look at what the fear of the Lord is—and isn’t—as we seek to find Godly wisdom.

Running on Empty

Before the invention of the printing press, access to a Bible was reserved only for the religious elite or the very wealthy. Most people had never touched a Bible never mind owned one. But today, not only are Bibles readily available in over 700 languages, but anyone with an internet connection has access to every translation ever recorded. And yet, in spite of it’s accessibility, many Christians admit that the area of faith that needs the most improvement is reading and studying Scripture. This Sunday, we’ll look at the importance of God’s word and it’s transformative power for our lives.

Going Back to Normal

It’s interesting to note that after the most earth-shattering event in human history—the resurrection of Jesus--the first story in John 21 is about Peter and four other disciples getting in a boat and going fishing. But what if where God is leading us isn’t back to normal but into a new reality of what it means to be the church in a post-Easter world? What Are You Waiting For?

According to Luke, one of the last things Jesus instructed his disciples to do in preparation for Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit was to wait. Of course, waiting is not something we enjoy very much. In fact, the entire last year has felt one long exercise in waiting. But what Luke wants us to understand is that there is an unexpected blessing in the practice of waiting on God. A Champion Is as a Champion Does

It feels good to be on the mountaintop. As believers, we love that feeling: God’s presence all around us; God’s power surging within us. On those days, we’re absolutely fearless. No doubts. No hesitation. No challenge can slow us down. It’s like there’s nothing we can’t do.Then all of a sudden, something (someone?) shows up and threatens to take it all away from us. Some new crisis emerges; and instantly, we forget all about God’s power. We forget about what God has done for us in the past. One moment, we’re standing on top of the mountain. The next moment, we’re digging our fingernails into the ledge, hanging on for dear life. Alone and afraid.Sound familiar? Why do we do this? Why do we constantly ping-pong back-and-forth between the extremes of faith and fear? Because we’re human. So, what’s the answer? If we can’t stay on the faith mountaintop all the time, is there perhaps some way that we can at least avoid falling prey to worry and discouragement every time we feel threatened?Maybe the answer has less to do with our emotions and more to do with our purpose. When God met the frightened prophet Elijah in the wilderness, he didn’t tell him not to be afraid. He told him to forget about his feelings for a moment, and to focus on doing what God had called him to do. Sometimes, that’s all we need to help us overcome fear and get us moving again.

Sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph somehow used his God-given gift to catapult himself to the second-most powerful position in all of Egypt. So, what do you do when, years later, the brothers who sold you into slavery come to Egypt looking for help? Is it the ultimate opportunity for revenge? Do you send them away empty-handed? Or do you put into practice the most difficult thing we can be asked to do? This week, we’ll look at the power—and difficulty—of forgiveness.
