1 John 4:13-16 Knowing God Abides In Us

A significant portion of 1 John focuses on the believers’ love for the body of Christ, so we are spending a lot of time talking about love. We are working our way through 1 John 4:7-21, which is a large section showing us that this love for one another is evidence of being born again. Last week, we examined verses 7-12, and this Sunday we will focus on verses 13-16. Although we are working through this passage in sections, it is important for us to remember that verses 7-21 are all one unit, bookended by the command to love one another. Last Sunday, we learned why this love for one another is an evidence of salvation: because God is love (v. 7-8), because God has loved us (v. 9-11), and because loving one another brings His love to its goal (v. 12). Verse 12 showed us two amazing realities. When we love one another, “God’s love abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.” In verses 13-16, John will show us how we know God abides in us, and (Next Sunday) in verses 17-21, he explains how his love is perfected in us. As we focus on verses 13-16 this Sunday, John repeatedly emphasizes how we know we abide in God and He in us. John uses the term “abide” for both union with God in salvation and communion with Him, but the primary sense in these verses is our saving relationship with God. We can have assurance of our saving union being real not by a special feeling, secret knowledge, or climbing a ladder of righteousness, but because: I. God has given us His Spirit (v. 13) II. We confess and trust in the true Jesus (v. 14-15) III. We have received and now show God’s love (v. 16) (also 17a)

1 John is a letter written so that believers might know with certainty they have eternal life (1 John 5:13). John offers clear evidence for us to examine our lives and confirm our salvation, while also revealing the false teaching of those who had left the church claiming to be the true Christians. Faced with these false teachers, John repeatedly applies three basic tests—doctrine, obedience, and love—to help us discern genuine faith. 1 John 2:7-11 focuses on the test of love for one another as the heart of the matter. John shows that love is both an old commandment rooted in God’s law and a new commandment fulfilled in Christ’s sacrificial example. Love is not merely something we try to do better, but a gospel reality already at work in every true believer (v. 8b-9), serving as clear evidence we are abiding in God’s light rather than walking in darkness. In verses 7-8, we see that love is both a command and a gospel reality. In verses 9-11, John explains that this love for the brethren is evidence that we abide in the light. John’s tests call us to honest self-examination—not to measure how perfectly we love, but to ask whether God has placed within us a genuine longing to love His people as Christ has loved us. If we are cold or indifferent to Jesus’ bride, the solution is not self-effort but turning afresh to Jesus in repentance and faith. More effort cannot fix a lack of love. Only the one who causes the darkness to pass away and the true light to shine in our hearts can do that. I. Love Is Both A Command & A Gospel Reality (v. 7-8) II. 1 John 2:12-14 Everything In Christ

Sunday, we will continue in 1 John as we focus our hearts in gratitude for the gospel. Over the past few sections, John has laid out some hard and convicting truths —truths about walking in the light, keeping God’s commands, and loving the brothers and sisters in Christ. These tests can feel heavy, but John’s purpose has never been to create fear or uncertainty in his readers. Instead, he writes so that those who believe in Jesus may know with confidence that they have eternal life. So, after the weighty and difficult sections, John pauses to speak directly to his readers—children, fathers, and young men (i.e. the whole family of God)—not to command them, but to remind them of who they already are in Christ. He assures them that their sins are forgiven, that they know the Father, that they have real strength, and that they have already overcome the evil one. The heart of John’s address to them is simple: there is nothing more to add to the gospel. Whether someone came to faith five minutes ago or has walked with Christ for forty years, they stand complete and secure in Jesus. We don’t fight our sin hoping to one day earn God’s acceptance—we fight from a victory that has already been won. Those in Christ are already adopted into God’s family by faith and overcomers by the blood of the Lamb. I. Little Children: Forgiven & Known (v. 12, 13c) II.
