Innovation in wool fabrics with Woolmark's Julie Davies

This week our guest is Julie Davies, General Manager for process innovation and education extension at the Woolmark Company. Her work is largely involved in product development and also education, mostly of people along the supply chain, so the likes of garment manufacturers, textile dyers and developers and the like. Julie’s perspective on wool is quite different from any other we have profiled on Women Behind Wool. She's been based in Sydney all her life and never really had much connection to the process of growing wool but she’s one of the best when it comes to knowing how to get the most out of wool as a natural fibre. We love that she has always had a love for textiles and making clothes and that through years of professional development, she really is at the top of her game in the field of using wool in innovative new fabrics and textiles.

Australia's #1 female shearer Cathy Wendelborn

Cathy Wendelborn is arguably the best female shearer to have existed in the world. This year she was the first female to be inducted into Australia’s Shearing Hall of Fame. Cathy was a self-taught shed and competition shearer who shore sheep in all Australian states (except NT) for 21 years. She used competition shearing as a way to improve her style and skills. In those competitions she came second a number of times and often she won, much to the disgust of the boys. In 1988 for the Australian Bicentenary she was invited to shear in front of the Queen – where she presented her royal highness with a staple of wool. This is her story..... Tea for teenagers with 15 yr old Sienna Capra from Spill The Tea Co.

Today’s guest is a 15 year old business entrepreneur from Greenethrope in central west New South Wales. Sienna Capra has just launched her own brand of Tea for teenagers, called Spill The Tea Co. She launched it from the comfort of her room at boarding school, winged by a gang of girls cheerleading her on, and helping to taste test, critique and perfect the taste and feel of her product – which is designed to fill a gap in the market – tea to help sooth issues faced by teens and early adults.

Shani Nottingham's Bread Tag Project is something we should all know about

The Bread Tag Project started when Shani Nottingham's boys were hungry and devouring tonnes of bread a week and leaving the bread tags all over the kitchen. Shani's creative mind naturally took over - and she decided this was going to be her point of difference as an artist. That was almost four years ago and now The Bread Tag project has become a huge beast, fuelled by bread tags send to Shani, in Cowra in central west NSW from all over the world and not just envelopes full, huge bags and boxes full. Joanne Howarth's innovative wool packaging for the food industry

In a former life, Joanne Howarth, the now CEO of Planet Protector Packaging used so much polystyrene packing she felt like she was single handedly destroying the planet. She set about finding an alternative for food packing in Australian, preferably one that was natural. After researching all sorts of fibres including cotton trash and coconut hemp, she was blown away by the thermal properties of wool. Now she’s on a mission to replace polystyrene with wool. We delight in Joanne’s story because she’s a city girl, who had no idea or emotional attachment to wool and is now its biggest convert. She has a dogged determination to tell the world about wool’s sustainability attributes, its incredible insulation capabilities not to mention its ability to be 100% biodegradable. Bec Bignell: How to make a film about farmers

Bec Bignell is a West Australian film maker on the road to big things, her biggest project to-date, her film HOMESPUN was picked up by streaming giant STAN last year after being acquired by ABC Commercial. Bec’s main mission in her film making is to challenge stereotypes everywhere. She’s pushing boundaries in her narratives, her characters and in the way she produces film. In many ways this film is based on a lifetime of observation and for that Rural Australia is lucky to have her - because her perspective as someone who grew up in WA’s wheatbelt runs deep, drawing on her experiences and observations of childhood, community, stereotypes, expectations, hard times, good times - its endless. HOMESPUN was was financed in large part by Bec personally. It was shot in just two-weeks with locals - who had no acting experience - featured as many of the main characters. I’ve watched it a few times now and there are so many relatable moments, that hit deep in parts and just make you laugh in others. It’s refreshing to see how humorous and engaging these kind of characters can be on screen - because really, we’ve never seen rural Australia depicted in this way before.
