And so the Trial Begins In the morning of 5th September 2023 there is a queue outside Stockholm District Court. Journalists from Sweden and abroad gathered to follow the longest trial in Swedish history. Two former executives of a Swedish Oil company, Ian Lundin and Alex Scheinter, stand trial for war crimes committed in South Sudan over 20 years ago. E4: How to Build a Case

How to Build a Case The trial moves on, and piece by piece, the prosecutors are building their case. Internal reports, security logs, meetings between the company and representatives from the Sudanese government, as well as reports from human rights organizations, are being used as pieces in the prosecutor's big puzzle. To help us navigate through all the different reports, we invited Mikael Ekman, Senior Legal Adviser at the organization Civil Rights Defenders, who has been following the trial on a day-to-day basis. E6: Victims Left with Nothing

The Victims Left with Nothing There have been major developments in the trial. On November 22, 2023, the court decided to separate the South Sudanese plaintiff's claims for compensation from the war crimes trial. Instead, the victims will have to start separate civil cases that require them to deposit 45 000 euros each. The court argues that the claims for compensation were handed in too late and that the power of attorneys is still missing. What will this mean for the victims? Before Bol Maker's testimony in court in 2024, an audio clip is played. It's a threat directed at every witness in the trial against Lundin Oil: "We are going to assassinate you one by one." In today's episode, we are joined by Anna Roxvall and Carolina Jemsby, the two renowned journalists behind the investigative documentary "Lundinfallet - Tysta alla vittnen" at Kalla fakta, TV4. In their documentary, published on March 20th, they uncover evidence of witness tampering in the ongoing Lundin trial. They reveal serious threats and violence faced by key witnesses, shedding a light on the dangerous repercussions of speaking out in this high-stakes case and highlighting the courage of those who have chosen to testify. Media training for Palestinian youth

This is the third and last part of a trilogy about the 'Civil Society for Dignity' project, a project by MEND, PCR, PCPD and PAX for Peace, supported by the European Union. This project aims to bridge the gap between the Palestinian civil society and the local governments. In this last episode Anwaar, who works for MEND and is the media and outreach coordinator for this project and journalist Hayat Hamdan tell us more about an important part of the Civil Society for Dignity project: the media training. This training helps young Palestinians to brainstorm about and to vocalize what they would like to change in their societies and it teaches them the skills and tools to create media content that can be used to communicate their wishes for change. This is an important skill that can be used in civil society participation on the political level. Partners in this joined project are: MEND stands for Middle East Non Violence and Democracy. MEND promotes active nonviolence and encourages alternatives to violence among youth and adults throughout Palestine. MEND employs innovative methods, especially with the media, and is widely respected for working with authenticity, professionalism and courage. PCR is the Palestinian Center for Rapprochement between people. PCR works to bridge the gap between Palestinians and peoples from all around the world, informing the public about the reality in Palestine, and empowering the community through nonviolent direct action. PCPD is the Palestinian Center for Peace and Democracy. They were established to promote a just peace based on the Palestinian Declaration of Independence of 1988 and relevant United Nations Resolutions towards a two state solution, in which democracy and social justice are guaranteed. PAX for Peace is based in the Netherlands and works together with committed citizens and partners to protect civilians against acts of war, to end armed violence, and to build a just peace. In Palestine PAX supports local partners in building resilient communities, promoting human security and equality in the political, cultural and social domain, and in fighting the injustices resulting from the protracted occupation.
