The Spirituals, part 2

In Part 2 of The Spirituals, we step back and examine the historical and cultural background of the church in Corinth to better understand why Paul devoted three chapters to the subject of spiritual gifts. This message explores the pagan influences that surrounded the Corinthian church, the confusion that resulted when worldly ideas entered the church, and the importance of distinguishing between the work of the Holy Spirit and counterfeit spirituality. Paul's concern was not simply that believers possess spiritual gifts, but that they understand the purpose of those gifts and use them in a way that produces unity, clarity, and spiritual maturity. As modern Christians face many of the same pressures from culture, this message serves as a reminder that true spirituality is always rooted in Scripture, centered on Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The Spirituals, part 1

In part one of our series The Spirituals, we begin laying the biblical foundation for understanding the spiritual gifts by first examining what it truly means to be a servant within the body of Christ. Starting in 1 Timothy chapter 3 and moving into 1 Corinthians chapter 12, this message explores the connection between spiritual maturity, sanctification, church membership, and faithful service in the local church. Before discussing spiritual gifts themselves, Scripture calls believers to holiness, self-government, spiritual growth, and biblical service as faithful diakonos — servants of the body of Christ. This opening message also introduces the central theme that carries throughout the series: we are many members, but one body. Spiritual gifts were never designed for self-glory or spiritual hierarchy, but for the building up of the church and the glory of Christ. Instead, sports should function underneath the Lordship of Christ as a tool for stewardship, discipline, perseverance and character development. In this episode, we discuss: -The biblical purpose of work and stewardship -Athletics as a training ground for life and vocation -How sports reveal character under pressure -The dangers of identity being tied to performance -Emotional instability within modern youth athletics -The role of failure, discipline and perseverance -And how Christian families can think biblically about competition and development Athletics can be a tremendous gift from God, but when sports become ultimate, disorder inevitably follows. This episode challenges parents, coaches and athletes to rethink sports from the perspective of Scripture and to ask not merely, “Is my child improving?” but rather, “What is this system forming my child into?”
