Bob Taylor, MD-PhD - Owning a Leash Without a Dog

Dr. Bob Taylor is a Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, the Marcus Chair in Vascular Medicine, and the Director of the Division of Cardiology at Emory University. He received his PhD from Johns Hopkins and his MD from Harvard where he also did his internal medicine residency before coming to Emory as a Cardiology Fellow. He shares with us his circuitous journey to becoming a physician scientist, the structures in place to help people like him achieve their goals in academics, and what it’s like directing a large clinical division. Brian Robinson, MD-PhD - The End of the Yellow Brick Road

Dr. Brian Robinson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Emory University. He graduated from the Emory MSTP program in 2013 and has gone on to complete a residency in anatomic pathology and a fellowship in GI pathology. He was just recently promoted from Instructor to Assistant Professor and is actively setting up his research program. Steven Sloan, MD-PhD - Serendipity and the Legacy of Ben Barres

Dr. Steven Sloan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at Emory University. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami before attending Stanford to pursue his MD/PhD. In our conversation, Dr. Sloan shares with us his story of discovering research and medicine and the highs and lows he experienced along the way. Sean Stowell, MD-PhD - Riding a Bike while Juggling

Dr. Sean Stowell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at Emory University. He attended Emory for his MD-PhD degree, where he worked in the lab of Dr. Rick Cummings. He stayed at Emory for his residency in pathology, and is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology. Olujimi Ajijola, MD, PhD - The Physician Scientist Highway

Dr. Olujimi Ajijola is a leader in physician-scientist education and directs both the PSTP and MSTP at UCLA. He earned his BS from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, his MD from Duke, and his PhD in Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology from UCLA. He completed residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at UCLA. Today, Dr. Ajijola shares his thoughts on how and why we train physician-scientists - and what needs to change to keep the workforce robust and relevant. Parenting in Medical Training w/ Dr. Yaa Asare, Dr. Kira Grush, & Dr. Kyle McDaniel

In this episode we discuss the challenges and rewards of parenting during medical training with special guests Dr. Yaa Asare, Dr. Kira Grush, & Dr. Kyle McDaniel. Yaa Asare is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician (2024) who trained at the University of Colorado. She is currently a fellow in the University of Colorado Hospice and Palliative Medicine Program. Her professional goals are to practice both primary care and Palliative Medicine. She is a native of Ghana, though has lived in the Denver area for 20 years. She enjoys exploring spicy cuisines and taking long walks with her husband, daughter, and dog. Kira Grush, MD, MA (she/her/hers) is a Chief Medical Resident at the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program. She is originally from Boulder, Colorado and remains a “forever Coloradan,” having received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Colorado College and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and MD from the University of Colorado. She comes to medicine after a career in K-12 education where she served as a middle school English teacher and, later, Dean of Students in the Cole neighborhood of Denver. She plans to pursue fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine with the long-term goal of developing curriculum around critical care and health equity. Outside of work, Kira spends her time with her husband, Kyle, who is a hospitalist at the University of Colorado Hospital, and their 16-month-old son, Nolan, who has quickly become their whole world. Together, they enjoy playing board games, traveling, watching the Rockies (lose), and spending time outside. Kyle McDaniel, MD, is a hospitalist and instructor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical campus, where he earned his MD and did internal medicine residency. Brandon Fornwalt, MD, PhD - Embrace Your Weirdness

Dr. Brandon Fornwalt is the Senior Vice President of Cardiology at Tempus Labs. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, his MD from Emory, and his Ph.D. from Georgia Tech, followed by a one-year internship in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Boston. As you will hear, his passion for research took him next to the University of Kentucky as an Assistant Professor where he established his research program, before heading to Geisinger as a Diagnostic Radiology Resident before ultimately joining the faculty. He left Geisinger for Tempus Labs in 2021. Dr. Fornwalt’s career pathway exemplifies the versatility of dual-degree training, and we pick his brain about life in and out of academics and clinical medicine, what it means to be a physician-scientist, and his advice for thriving in this career. John O'Shea, MD - Curiosity & Creativity

Dr. John O’Shea is the Scientific Director at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the NIH, Chief of the branch of Molecular Immunology and Inflammation, and a senior investigator whose lab studies cytokine signaling transduction. Dr. O’Shea earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University in New York, his MD from the University of Cincinnati, and completed his residency training in internal medicine at SUNY upstate medical center. He then became a fellow at the NIH in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, served as a commissioned officer in the US public health service, and ultimately started his own research group at the NIH in 1989. He has made incredible contributions to our understanding of cytokine signaling, including cloning Jak3 and demonstrating its role in the pathogenesis of severe combined immunodeficiency, as well as developing the JAK inhibitor tofacitinib. Outside of science, Dr. O’Shea is an avid musician, and as you will hear – once played alongside Dr. Francis Collins at the Kennedy Center as the opener for Stevie Nicks. Paul Cederna, MD - Endless Opportunities for Surgeon-Scientists

Dr. Paul Cederna is the Robert Oneal Professor of Plastic Surgery, Chief of the Section of Plastic Surgery, and Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Dr. Cederna earned his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and his MD from the University of Michigan. He then did his residency in General Surgery and Fellowship in Microsurgery at the University of Iowa, before returning to the University of Michigan to complete a fellowship in Plastic Surgery and a postdoc studying muscle mechanics before joining the faculty.
