E189: Why do treehoppers have such strange body shapes? [SJK Audio Edition]

Abstract: Some animals can sense tiny electric fields around them. We call this electroreception. Sharks use it underwater. Using it in the air is harder, but some insects can do it. Treehoppers have strange body shapes with a part that can look like a helmet or crazy hat on their backs. We wanted to find out if this helps them use electroreception. We measured how much static electricity is on treehoppers, bees, and wasps. We then watched how treehoppers reacted to small electric fields – like the ones we measured on the insects. We also used computer models to test if their body shape made electric cues stronger around them. We found out that treehoppers, bees and wasps all produce electric fields. Wasps usually produce stronger electric fields than bees. Moreover, treehoppers can sense other insects’ electric fields. These fields can provide information about what is nearby. Strong electric fields – like the ones wasps produce – might warn them about danger. Tiny hairs on their backs help them sense those fields. We also found out that their helmet shape made the fields stronger. So, this rare sense and their unique body shape work together to help them stay safe from danger. Abstract: Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is an important energy source for some countries. Sometimes it’s claimed to be cleaner than coal since it produces less CO₂ when burned. Yet LNG comes mostly from shale gas, which is made up almost entirely from methane gas. And the process of extracting, cooling it to liquid form, and moving it releases some of this methane to the atmosphere. So is LNG really a cleaner alternative to coal? To find out, we calculated the carbon footprint of LNG and its production. It turned out LNG has a larger footprint than coal! This is because of methane emissions during different stages of gas and LNG production. Methane is over 20 times more powerful than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. This is a public episode. Abstract: Fish are fascinating animals. Individual fish have places they call home as well as their own daily routines. We wanted to find out whether oyster cages (gear used to farm oysters) provide habitat for fish. Do they like to hang out there? Do they live there? Which species spend time there and what do they get up to? We used two methods, underwater video cameras and environmental DNA, to uncover the secret lives of fish. The videos let us see which species hung out at the cages and watch their behaviors. Environmental DNA helped us find the species that are hard to see on camera, like very small or nocturnal fish. We found 7 fish species on video and 42 species using environmental DNA. Some species were abundant at the oyster cages. We even watched them getting up to behaviors like foraging for food and sheltering from predators and currents. Oyster cages can act as artificial reefs, providing valuable habitat for fish! Abstract: Has anyone ever said that you couldn’t or shouldn’t do something because of one of your traits? If so, you’ve probably been the victim of a stereotype. A stereotype is a set of shared beliefs based on a trait or the identity of a group. A common stereotype is that women are not as good at or interested in science as men. This can result in fewer women participating in the sciences. We wanted to know if and when these gender stereotypes about science affect children and adolescents. We also wanted to know if stereotypes cause girls to be less interested in and take part less in these fields. To find out, we conducted surveys and laboratory experiments. We found that very young students believed these gender stereotypes. Girls were less interested in participating in computer science and engineering if they believed the stereotypes. So, teachers and schools should try to generate interest in these fields at an early age.
