Setting a Course

“The Naked Time” 60th-anniversary reflections. Arriving at Psi 2000 to pick up a team of scientists from the dying planet, the Enterprise finds everyone already dead, frozen at their posts in a station where someone switched off life support—one of them fully clothed in the shower. A careless nose scratch by crewman Joe Tormolen brings whatever infected the scientists back to the ship. Everyone starts acting drunk and overly emotional. Sulu gets into shirtless fencing, Nurse Chapel confesses her love for Spock, and Riley locks himself in engineering to sing Irish ballads. With the engines shut off, the ship begins spiraling toward the planet and a fiery end. In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 60th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of the original Star Trek, one episode at a time. In this installment, we continue Season 1 with the fourth aired episode, “The Naked Time,” as we discuss setting the tone, comparison, Spock’s struggle, Chapel, the ending, if it holds up, with our final thoughts and ratings. A Web of Deceit

“Damage” 20th-anniversary reflections When we last saw the Enterprise, it was riddled with holes and crewmembers were flying out into space. Five are confirmed dead and a dozen are wounded. With the ship limited to impulse, Archer finds himself in a do-or-die situation that pushes him to betray his ethics and steal the warp coil from friendly aliens who asked for help. Meanwhile, the Xindi council bickers over the truth about their weapons project and the human threat. They are also paid a visit by a Sphere Builder. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 20th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode at a time. In this installment, we continue Season 3 with “Damage” as we discuss the pressure and hard choices facing Archer, T’Pol’s breakdown, the Sphere Builders, and more. Wrestling With Thoughts on God

“Where No Man Has Gone Before” 60th-anniversary reflections On a mission to the edge of the galaxy, the Enterprise recovers the disaster recorder of the SS Valiant, an Earth ship lost two centuries earlier. Its final entries point to a frantic search for information on ESP—extrasensory perception—and a captain ordering the destruction of his own ship. Captain Kirk takes the Enterprise into the galactic barrier and the ship encounters strange activity that may have been what did in the Valiant. As electric charges strike the bridge, Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner are struck. Mitchell's eyes glow silver, and he begins to exhibit unusual powers that grow by the hour. His contempt for the mere mortals around him grows as well, and Kirk must decide whether to maroon his old friend on a barren rock—or kill him while he still can. In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 60th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of the original Star Trek, one episode at a time. In this installment, we continue Season 1 with the third aired episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” as we discuss a second pilot, the handoff from “The Cage,” the need for compassion, human nature, fists over philosophy, and whether the story holds up six decades later. Check Yes If You Like Me

“Charlie X” 60th-anniversary reflections While investigating the planet Thasus, the crew of the Antares takes in a young crash survivor who had been stranded alone for 14 years. The boy, Charlie Evans, is then transferred to the Enterprise where his teenage angst becomes amplified as he tries to fit in with other humans. Attempts by Kirk, Rand, and others to help him acclimate are made far more difficult thanks to Charlie’s psychokinetic powers. Acting out whenever something doesn’t go his way, Charlie eventually takes over the Enterprise and the non-corporeal Thasians, who protected him during years of isolation and are responsible for his powers, are forced to step in and bring Charlie back “home.” In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 60th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of the original Star Trek, one episode at a time. In this installment, we continue Season 1 with the second aired episode, “Charlie X,” as we discuss its relevance in today’s world, the challenges of growing up, the importance of guidance, why you can’t always get what you want, and more. In the Key of A Minor

“Tomorrow’s Enterprise” As the Enterprise studies a white hole, the theoretical counterpart of a black hole, Uhura begins hearing strange music. Soon, an energy pulse strikes the ship and Uhura hears Scotty screaming for help. But no one else hears his cries, and she is left bleeding. Once cleared by Doctor M’Benga, Uhura sets out to investigate what happened … and ends up contacting her future self. With one year to work with, the two Uhuras must collaborate through time to solve the mystery of the anomaly and help birth a space baby to save Scotty and restore the timeline. In this episode of Saddle Up! hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing wrap up our look at Strange New Worlds Season 4 with the finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise.” We discuss Uhura’s journey, hopping timelines, visiting Kirk’s Enterprise, how the story could have served as a series finale, and more. Depth of Performance

“Whispers” 30th-anniversary reflections When Chief O’Brien returns from a security briefing on Parada, he finds everyone on the station acting strangely toward him. Keiko and Molly pull away, Bashir insists on an unscheduled physical, and his own repair assignments seem designed to keep him out of the loop. The more he investigates, the more it looks like a conspiracy has taken over Deep Space 9—until he flees the station and uncovers a truth he never suspected. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one episode at a time. In this installment, we discuss “Whispers,” the effective simplicity of the story, and how it all hinges on nuanced acting and consistent character-building. The Orb 5: Torn Between Two Worlds

Odo. When he was found in the Denorios Belt, Odo was literally a blank slate. As a being without form, without knowledge of his origins, and without knowing how to interact with those who had brought him in, Odo found himself at the beginning of a long journey that would ultimately find him torn between the world of his birth and the world in which he—for the lack of a better term—grew up. In this episode of The Orb, hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing take a closer look at Odo and his search for identity and acceptance, as well as how he adapted to the changining environments of Terok Nor and Deep Space 9. We also look at what he learned from Quark and how his love for Kira ultimately shaped the person he became—and saved the Alpha Quadrant in the process.
