A Song of Varying Ways (Psalm 1)

Summary: In this sermon (preached from Psalm 1 by Pastor Andrew Ray), we learn that life offers two paths...one righteous and the other ungodly. Each of us has to decide which path we will trod. The Uniqueness of the Psalm 1. Other psalms, like the first psalm, drive home the intended truths with little to no repetition. 2. In fact, the first psalm, written by an anonymous penman, emphasizes two destinations, brought on by two paths taken by two different men. B. The Wisdom of the Psalm 1. Many choices begin in seemingly insignificant scenarios yet end in outcomes anything but insignificant. 2. How great would it be to be able to see the end from the beginning? 3. In His grace, God has provided just that in His word. 4. He first warns us not to make wrong choices and then shows us the outcome of those choices. 5. If this section, as is supposed, correlates to the book of Genesis, it would stand to reason that this psalm would correlate to the time in the garden. Regardless of how closely the two are associated, the truths were played out in the garden and should serve as a warning to us. II. TWO MEN (Psalm 1:1-2, 4) A. The Blessed Man (Psalm 1:1-2; see also the last psalm in this section Psalm 41:1) 1. His disassociation 2. His association—“the law of the LORD” B. The Ungodly Man (Psalm 1:4) 1. His association; noted by the phrase “are not so” 2. His disassociation—“the law of the LORD” III. TWO PATHS (Psalm 1:1-4a) A. The Path of Blessing (Psalm 1:1-3) 1. A path of separation (Psalm 1:1-2) 2. A path of strength (Psalm 1:3) B. The Path of Judgment (Psalm 1:4a) 1. The ungodly are not so. 2. Note: Everything said about the strength of the godly does not pertain to the ungodly. In other words, he is the exact opposite or antithesis of the righteous or godly man. IV. TWO ENDS (Psalm 1:4b-6) A. The Destruction of the Ungodly (Psalm 1:4b-6) 1. They are like the chaff which the wind driveth away (Psalm 1:4). 2. They shall not stand in the judgment (Psalm 1:5). 3. They shall not stand in the congregation of the righteous (Psalm 1:5). 4. Their way shall perish (Psalm 1:6). B. The Blessing of the Blessed (Psalm 1:5-6) 1. They shall congregate (Psalm 1:5). 2. THE RAGE OF THE HEATHEN (Psalm 2:1-3) A. The Unity of the World (Psalm 2:1-2a) 1. The common people (Psalm 2:1; Acts 4:25, 27) 2. The leaders (Psalm 2:2; Acts 4:26-27)—“Herod, and…Pilate” (Acts 4:27) B. The Rejection of the Lord (Psalm 2:2b-3) 1. The source of their angst (Psalm 2:2b; Acts 4:26-27) 2. The purpose of their angst (Psalm 2:3; Acts 4:28) II. THE REIGN OF THE KING (Psalm 2:4-6) A. The First Laugh 1. All they that see me laugh me to scorn (Psalm 22:7). 2. When the King is on His throne (Psalm 2:6; Isaiah 9:6-7) III. THE VICTORY WROUGHT (Psalm 2:7-9) A. The Beginning of the Victory (Psalm 2:7; Romans 14:9) 1. Prophesied 2. Accomplished B. The Acquisition of the Victory (Psalm 2:8-9; Matthew 4:8-11; Isaiah 53:12) 1. The Son’s inheritance and possession (Psalm 2:8) 2. The Son’s vengeance (Psalm 2:9) IV. THE ADMONITION GIVEN (Psalm 2:10-12) A. To Wisdom (Psalm 2:10; see Revelation 13:18; Revelation 17:9) 1. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings. 2. Be instructed, ye judges of the earth. B. To Fear (Psalm 2:11) 1. Serve the LORD with fear. 2. Rejoice with trembling. C. To Obeisance (Psalm 2:12) 1. Kiss the Son (see Psalm 2:7 with Acts 13:33; Hebrews 1:5; Hebrews 5:5). David fled from his son (Absalom) and relinquished the kingdom. In doing so, he showed forth a pattern of how men today often deal with their problems. Instead of running, David should have stayed, fought, and trusted God.

The Fall of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3)

Adam and Eve lived in the garden where God placed them. One day the serpent showed up and began a conversation with Eve. The serpent questioned the validity of God’s word and convinced Eve that she would profit from partaking of the forbidden tree. Eve, and Adam with her, partook of the fruit and their eyes were opened. Later, the voice of the Lord came into the garden as at other times, yet this time Adam and Eve hid from Him. The Lord found Adam and questioned him and Eve concerning their sin. Though Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent, in the end, all were judged. Because of their sin, Adam and Eve were sent forth out of the garden in Eden.

The Lord created man and placed him in the garden to keep it. It was a beautiful place with trees that were pleasant to the sight and good for food. The Lord saw that it was not good for man to be alone so God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and removed a rib to create a companion and helper just for him.

The Risks and Rewards of Judging (Luke 6:37-42)

Many who have never read the scripture for themselves make reference to a few verses and claim that none of us are to judge. Others take to the other extreme and say that the Bible makes no warnings against judging whatsoever. As is often the case, the truth is in the middle of the two positions. While there are risks to judging, there are also rewards. May God help us to find the balance and learn the lessons He intended.

The Building of Noah's Ark (Genesis 6)

As men began to multiply on the face of the earth, the sons of God saw the daughters of men and took them as wives. This resulted in offspring as giants. The Lord saw the wickedness of man and declared His coming judgment. One man, however, found grace in the eyes of the Lord. The Lord, not willing to administer an unjust judgment, told this man (Noah) of the coming judgment and pointed to the way of escape. God gave Noah the measurements needed and the plan to preserve the animals.

The Great Flood (Genesis 7 & 8)

God ensured the deliverance of Noah, his family, and all kinds of animals by shutting them within the ark. Once Noah, his family, and the animals were safe, God sent the flood of waters. These waters covered the earth, the hills, and the mountains; but those in the ark remained safe. Mankind experienced a new beginning when Noah and his family departed from the ark to begin their new life on the earth. Noah built an altar to God which pleased the Lord.
