New Year, New Yemen?: The STC's offensive and the change in the balance of power

As 2025 was coming to a close, the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Yemen decided they had one last roll of the dice to make. At the start of December, the STC launched a military operation to seize the eastern governorates of Yemen. They quickly swept across the region, with arms supplied by the UAE. It was a great success, until the Yemeni government, backed by Saudi Arabia, fought back. This week on The New Arab Voice podcast, we look at the STC's offensive in the east of Yemen, the fight back by the Yemeni government, and the impact that these operations have had on the balance of power in Yemen. Bending the Knee to Damascus: The Syrian Democratic Forces agree to integrate into the Syrian state

A little over a year from the start of the new government in Syria, violence returned to Aleppo. In January, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the forces of the interim Syrian government clashed in the Aleppo areas of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah. The SDF came off worse and were forced to retreat back to the northeast; and such was the scale of the defeat, they were forced into signing a deal that will see the SDF integrated into the Syrian army. For almost a year, the SDF has been resisting such a deal. This week, we look at the fighting in Aleppo, the deal that has been signed, and why, the status of the SDF and Syria's Kurds, and what these event mean for the Syria that President al-Sharaa is building. We're joined by Dr. Rahaf Aldoughli (@r_aldoughli), senior editor at Cogent Social Sciences and fellow at the Arab Reform Initiative (@ArabReform_ARI), and also, Joseph Daher (@JosephDaher19), a Syrian academic and specialist on the political economy of the Middle East. MENA-ingful Representation: Stereotypes, survival and shaking-up the TV and film industry

This week on The New Arab Voice we're examining MENA representation in TV, film and gaming. Communities from the region have historically been demonised on screen, condemned to either silence or sterotypes. However, the past year has brought major release that have diversified who we see on screen and the stories that are shared on global platform. We explore a number of these releases include Netflix comedy series Mo and the film Farha about Palestine during the 1948 Nakba. We also delve into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, looking at what they've done well in terms of representation and what they can do better. Also in this episode, we plug in and have a look at the mistakes that video games have made, when it comes to the representation of Arabs and Muslims, and also the cultural errors that video game publishers have made. 2025 in Review

The year is drawing to a close, which means its time for The New Arab Voice's annual review of year. To guide us through the tangled mess of the past 12 months, we're joined by The New Arab's Managing Editor Karim Traboulsi (@Kareemios), and journalist Oliver Mizzi (@OllyMizzi99). The Poachers Trail: Part 2

This is part 2 of a special investigation. You can find part 1 in your feeds now. For 15 months, The New Arab, in cooperation with Bridges Investigations, explored the shadowy world of Maltese bird hunters. We uncovered how Maltese hunters, frustrated by local laws, were travelling to Egypt to slaughter migratory birds in vast numbers. Their hunting activities have been described as an environmental disaster, and a threat to the thousands of migratory birds who rely on Egyptian wetlands. We went undercover in Fayoum. Followed the smuggling routes from Egypt’s lakes to Maltese homes. And saw how Europe’s conservation efforts collapse when its citizens pull the trigger abroad. This is more than a story of poaching. It’s about wasted conservation money, destroyed ecosystems, and a system that rewards hunters while silencing conservationists. Provisionally Stopping Genocide: The ICJ measures for Gaza and the response by Israel and its allies

The International Court of Justice returned a verdict on 26 January. Not a complete verdict on whether genocide is being committed by Israel in Gaza, but the court did agree that there was a case to be heard, and it did recognise that there was a sense of urgency. Because of this urgency, they issued a series of provisional measures; these include an order to end the killing of civilians, end the mental and physical harm of civilians, immediately allow the distribution of aid, to name a few. This week on The New Arab Voice, we look at the provisional measures imposed by the International Court of Justice, what they are ordering of Israel, whether they will be abided to by Israel, what mechanisms exist if the provisional measures are ignored, and also what the case means for Israel's allies, namely the US. Joining us to explain the International Court of Justice and it mechanisms is Akila Radhakrishnan (@akila_rad). Akila is the strategic legal advisor for gender justice for the Strategic Litigation Project (@SLPJustice) at the Atlantic Council (@AtlanticCouncil). The Casino Manager Cashes Out: The departure of Riad Salameh from Lebanon's Central Bank

Riad Salameh spent 30 years at the top of Lebanon’s Central Bank. Some called him a magician. But in recent years, his tricks have been revealed to devastating effects. In 2019 the Lebanese economy dramatically collapsed and many inside and outside the country pointed the finger of blame at Riad Salameh. Despite the economic problems, he stayed on. But on the last day of July, Riad Salameh walked out of Lebanon’s Central Bank for the last time. Four years have passed since the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower that exposed the deep schisms in British society. Today, what is left of the tower stands as a reminder of the ever-growing inequality and class divide in Britain. In fact, some would argue it was precisely the issues of poverty and institutional racism that led to the fateful event which took the live of 72 people in Grenfell. The tower, although situated in one of the richest boroughs in London, also housed some of its most marginalized communities – poor, racialised and migrant families. Listen as we remember and reflect on the continued significance of this tragedy in light of ongoing oppression as well as resistance to it. In the webinar, our speakers addressed the links between the Grenfell fire and wider crises of housing, poverty, structural racism and xenophobia in Britain. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Fatima El-Guenuni is the Community Collaboration Consultant for Central and North West London NHS foundation Trust (CNWL). She has worked for CNWL as an Islamic psychotherapist and child and adolescent primary mental health therapist. Fatima has had a major a role in helping ensure that the Grenfell community voice is amplified at decision-making levels both locally and on a national level. Lowkey is a hip hop artist and political campaigner who has performed everywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to the Oxford Union. He is a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and others. Paul O’Connell is a socialist and trade unionist. He teaches law at SOAS University of London and was a founding member of the LeFT Campaign and The Beehive, a political education project centred on Greater Manchester.
