    Born and raised in Swaziland (Eswatini), Richard E. Grant moved to London in 1982 after studying drama at Cape Town University. He worked extensively in theatre before achieving widespread recognition in the cult classic Withnail and I in 1987. Richard had notable roles in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, for which he received an Academy Award nomination, as well as The Iron Lady, Star Wars: Episode IX and Saltburn. Richard has appeared in some of the biggest shows on TV, including Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones and Loki. His new show, The Franchise, is available to watch on Sky Comedy and NOW. Nick pours Richard a cranberry juice on ice, while Angela prepares one of his favourite dishes, spaghetti with chilli and parsley mussels.     Richard E Grant was born in Swaziland, now Eswatini, one of the smallest countries in Africa, and took his first steps as an actor as a teenager in the local amateur theatre company. He studied Drama and English at Cape Town University in South Africa, and moved to London in 1982, hoping to find work as an actor, with - in his words - 'nothing more than a couple of suitcases, a boxful of music cassettes and blind ambition.' He worked as a waiter to pay the bills, until his very first film role, in Withnail and I, launched his acting career. Since then, he has appeared in a very wide range of films, with roles in How to Get Ahead in Advertising, The Player, Jack and Sarah, Logan and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, as well as the Star Wars series. He was nominated for an Oscar in 2019 for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Richard has been a lifelong diarist and has published three collections of memoirs. His most recent book chronicles his long and happy marriage to his wife, the dialect coach Joan Washington, who died from cancer in 2021.     "Because her edict was to find that pocketful of happiness in each day. Feeling no guilt seems an incredibly generous and welcome gift to have been unexpectedly given by her." Richard E. Grant is an actor, author and director who has appeared in over 80 films and television programs, such as Withnail And I, Star Wars and was previously Oscar nominated for his supporting role in Can you Ever Forgive me?. His beloved wife Joan died in September 2021 after a battle with lung cancer and in September 2022 he released a memoir called A Pocketful of Happiness mostly written in the last year of his wife’s life.  In this episode we discuss: How grief is influenced by the circumstances of death and how not having regrets is an important factor that makes the difference between a good and bad death.  Recognising that the process of grief is an oscillation between loss orientation and restoration orientation. Why it’s important we update our understanding of grief, it isn’t about forgetting and moving on but remembering and connecting, sometimes with the pain.  How the love for the person who you’ve lost never dies.
