  8. Mike Campbell: The Man Behind Tom Petty

    15/04/2025

Mike Campbell: The Man Behind Tom Petty

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tom Petty died in 2017, but his music continues to live on thanks to hits like "Refugee", "Here Comes My Girl", and "Runnin' Down a Dream." But recently Jason and Peter were stunned to learn that Petty didn’t write those songs alone. Really, no Really! Mike Campbell was an original member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and co-wrote many of the band's legendary hits and was considered by Petty to be the Heartbreakers’ co-captain. Campbell himself, continues to have an impressive career, now fronting the band The Dirty Knobs and playing and writing music with legendary rockers like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, George Harrison and more. But that got the guys wondering, what it’s like being the “unrecognized talent” regularly standing just behind and co-writing with iconic names? While much of Mike’s career was alongside Petty, he notably gave Don Henley the music for his 1984 hit "The Boys of Summer" and he worked closely with Stevie Nicks, Aretha Franklin and too many others to name. Campbell just released his first book: Heartbreaker: A Memoir *** ON THIS EPISODE: Where Heartbreaker guitar lines came from. What gives guitarists their “sound”? Mike stores his guitars in a dry-cleaning rack? They say Bob Dylan is “enigmatic” – What does that mean? Tiny clubs vs. stadiums – Which is better to play? On-stage and having to pee. What do you do? 9. Tipping: How Not to Tip, When to Tip + How Much to Tip

    20/06/2023

Tipping: How Not to Tip, When to Tip + How Much to Tip

How did tipping get so confusing? The Cut, a New York magazine, recently published new guidelines for tipping and suggested a 20% gratuity, regardless of the level of service you received. Really, no Really! The expansion of point-of-sale technology that prompts customers to tip at coffee shops and convenience stores has dramatically changed the way we perceive and engage with tipping. Should you now tip for a pack of gum or bottled water in situations where human interaction is minimal or non-existent? And just as tipping has gotten more confusing and uncomfortable, our tipping choices are prominently displayed on large swivel screens that invite others to scrutinize and judge. To help Jason and Peter navigate and understand the new rules of tipping, they invited Michael Lynn, a professor of consumer behavior and marketing at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration to join them. He has been studying why and how Americans tip for decades. Their Discussion Includes: Why efforts to move away from tipping in America always fail. Many people feel the tipping culture has become, “out of control”. Is a 25% restaurant tip the new 20%? Hatred of the swivel screen. Why raising menu prices and removing tips doesn’t work. New guidelines that perpetuate an already convoluted and often arbitrary tipping culture. Guilt Tipping and the atmosphere of obligation. Generational differences in tipping. Specific examples to help guide your tipping decisions. When it’s okay not to tip! Michael Lynn is a nationally recognized expert on tipping who has written over 70 research publications on this topic. His work on tipping has been covered by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the International Herald Tribune, the Economist, and Forbes as well as by ABC's 20/20, BET's Nightly News, and NPR. Banning Social Media …is that the right move?

As TikTok America’s legal limbo continues, Australia became the first country in the world to ban minors under age 16 from social media. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant warned the world saying, tech companies aren’t doing enough to protect kids online. Really, no Really! While the powers of social media apps are undeniable, the harms they cause are more… enigmatic. Even if harmful effects of social media are established, are bans an effective response? As this international debate rages on, there are millions of parents and young people looking down at their smartphones wondering what if anything they should do differently. What an AI-Generated George Carlin Means for Us All

There’s a brand-new, George Carlin comedy special, which is mystifying and disturbing since he died in 2008! Legendary comedian George Carlin was unceremoniously resurrected from the grave by a comedy podcast claiming to have created an AI-generated Carlin, based upon decades worth of his existing material. The special they created - “I’m Glad I’m Dead”- had the AI created legend commenting on current issues such as mass shootings, America’s class system, streaming services, social media…even Taylor Swift’s sex life…Really, no Really! But the computer-generated version lacks Carlin’s brilliance and has created a brouhaha that leads us to an unsettled legal question…whether training A.I. language learning models on publicly available written, visual and audio content infringes on the copyrights of artists and authors. Is it ethical or legal for someone to create a new George Carlin, without his or his estate’s permission? Jason and Peter needed to find out, so they went to the source, Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin to discuss the controversy, her lawsuit, her dad’s legacy, and what she feels her father would have to say about the current controversy? Kelly Carlin is a storyteller, writer, performer, photographer, a practitioner of Zen Buddhism and the daughter of the legendary comedian George Carlin who died in 2008. Since then, Kelly has upheld his legacy by spreading his life’s work through many media, protecting his work and image in the public sphere, and stepping into the limelight in her own right. As of November 2024, recreational cannabis is legal in 24 states and it’s available medically or decriminalized in an additional 20. Is there science-based evidence demonstrating what happens after long-term consumption? Is it true that teen emergency room visits are up, suicides and psychotic episodes are up, and schizophrenia is perhaps caused by cannabis? These became very personal questions when Peter realized he had become addicted to cannabis during the pandemic and struggled to stop.
