  1. Ep 5: The Dairy Problem with Animal Equality

    2017. 12. 07.

Ep 5: The Dairy Problem with Animal Equality

This week The ChickPeeps take a more serious turn as we investigate the issue with dairy and exactly why vegans don't consume it. Many non-vegans argue that taking its milk doesn't hurt cows and that in fact milking actually relieves the cow. We explore the reasons why this is a myth, and discuss the results of quitting dairy products entirely. We also interview two of the founders of Animal Equality, and creators of the groundbreaking iAnimal project, Jose Valle and Sharon Nunez, who recount in vivid detail the experiences they've had on dairy farms and the typical life of a dairy cow. Also on this episode... Is there more suffering in a glass of milk? 'You're not lactose intolerant, you're just not a baby cow.' The gifts/health benefits cows give you when you stop eating their secretions. Evy expresses her frustration with evolution to provide cows with adequate weaponry - why no fanged cows yet? Momo suggests carving holes in animals is probably not to their liking. Why do people think calcium is synonymous with dairy milk?  The Chickpeeps discuss their favourite dairy substitutes. Is dairy a feminist issue? How Animal Equality was founded. Jose shares how the iAnimal project was conceived. Tylor: 'These Animals are children who are then forced to have children who are then taken away just so we can drink their milk.' Is there an ethical way to consume dairy? The future for dairy farms. Ep 11: Plant Based Health with Dr.Garth Davis

After our fun, fictional, vegan musings of the magical world last week, the ChickPeeps take a more factual turn with a discussion on health as a vegan, and the common misconceptions society holds of plant-based nutrition. The brilliant Dr.Garth Davis, weight loss surgeon, author of Proteinaholic, and outspoken advocate for plant-based nutrition joins us (8.55 min in) for this episode to debunk the myths and explain to us the science of why our bodies function better without animal products. Also on this episode... Dr.Davis shares how his own health problems caused him to realise that the standard american diet was far from optimal. How Dr.Davis' perspective on health evolved and with it his attitude to diet: 'I just believed we were born with a lemon for a body'...'a flawed entity'. We're not in the food chain anymore.' Is eating too many carbs on a vegan diet cause for concern? 'A steak is not a protein'. Can you call white meat and fish 'clean'? Is cow's milk necessary for strong bones and healthy teeth? Why it's illegal to market eggs as 'healthy'. Complete proteins and how important it is to get the right balance of amino acids. B12; where it comes from and does Dr.Davis take a supplement? 2018. 04. 25.

Ep 22: Eggs with Juliet Gellatley

This week Robbie and Evy explore the myriad reasons why eggs are not vegan, and how the commercial egg industry has distorted the natural cycle of egg-laying hens to alarming and brutal proportions. We interview the bold and awe-inspiring founder and director of Viva!, Juliet Gellatley (4.05 mins) who share insights and stories from her work doing undercover investigations inside factory farm scale hen houses. We also address the heavily debated issue of backyard hens and whether it is ethical to consume eggs from free hens, and discuss solutions for how to substitute eggs in baking. Also on this episode… Juliet shares her story, from becoming vegan at 13 to campaigning for The Vegetarian Society to founding Viva!. Juliet describes the typical life of an egg laying hen in the UK. How factory farms selectively breed hens to be more productive. Why commercially available eggs are not even suitable for vegetarians. 'No bird is meant to lay 300 eggs a year, she's meant to lay 20.' 'This whole industry is based on distorting motherhood, a deliberate twisting of motherhood.' What's the difference between 'enriched cages' and free-range egg farms. 'What amazes me is that [animals] actually have the capacity to forgive.' Do hens need to lay eggs and what do free hens do with their eggs? Backyard hens: the oft debated topic of whether or not to eat the eggs of free hens. The clever contraceptive methods of hens and the feminist hen soap opera that would ensue. How old do hens live in the wild vs in factory farms? What Happened To The ChickPeeps?

Everything was going so well... It was Spring of 2021 and life was returning to a semblance of normality. We were leaving our lockdown caves for work, spending more time outdoors than in deep inner turmoil, and a new ChickPeeps episode dropped every Wednesday, sometimes even on time. We were having complex conversations about vegan capitalism, food equity and greenwashing, and things were getting a whole lot more interesting when, suddenly, season 3 came to an abrupt halt. The ChickPeeps promised to return in Autumn 2021 with a brand new season. But when the vegan world needed them most, they vanished... Hello, sweet 'peeps! It's been a hot minute and we appreciate we left a ChickPeep shaped hole in many of your lives, promptly plucking the podcast from the orbit just as it was reaching its peak. Call it an Irish Goodbye, or a French Escape, call it just plain rude and disorganized, whatever it was, this unprecedented hiatus and echoey silence from Team ChickPeep left many of you citing the constant refrain: 'What Happened To The ChickPeeps?', 'Anyone still read these emails?' And, most piteously, 'Are you guys ever coming back? :,( ? We're still here, and we hear you, so we've come together for a special episode to answer all these questions and more. In this episode...   ChickPeeps Catchup - a lot can change in two years! Robbie models a surprisingly wholesome t-shirt and spiritual growth, Momo discusses her ADHD diagnosis and leaving social media, Tylor is a magical cookbook author and Evy comes out as not-an-activist. MoJo; we ship it. ChickPeeps Rewind - listen and cringe-a-long as we listen back to our younger setting intentions for the podcast and evaluate their success. The future of ChickPeeps - Is the podcast ending? - Because it wouldn't be a ChickPeeps episode without a ridiculous scenarios game, we make some educated guesses on where each host will end up in the next 10 years in: 'Who's Most Likely To...? First Official ChickPeeps Meetup Announcement: will Momo and Tylor finally get to meet in person at Robbie's sanctuary or outside Tylor's prison cell? An uninvited past guest makes an uncomfortable reappearance. Snip snap, snip snap - one of us shares their personal reasoning for choosing to undergo sterilization. Is a ChickPeep hole shaped like a Chicken or a Chickpea? (jk, we don't get round to this) The hosts share some resources that have brought insight, support and joy to their vegan lives - Robbie: Visit a Sanctuary to connect with rescued animals! Check out this link for a comprehensive list. Tylor: PETA, The PETA Podcast, The Animal People, The Cranky Vegan and Tylor's podcast Radicals and Revolutionaries. Having already piloted their scheme with a number of ex-dairy farmers, including Katja & Jay Wilde, whose story was covered in the 2018 documentary 73 Cows, Geraldine joins us to talk about how Refarm'd is disrupting the dairy industry and what is next for the organisation. Also in this episode… Geraldine speculates on the limitations within the current model of animal sanctuaries and explains why dairy farms are perfectly equipped to become animal sanctuaries. "There is really a war between farmers and vegans" - Geraldine talks about wanting to heal the animosity between the farming and animal rights' communities and how she intends to help farmers and animals with one organisation. "Finally, we're helping the farmers. The future is with them, not against them" - Geraldine describes the reaction of vegans to the work of Refarm'd. In our third-part episode of the discussion of animal rights in the magical world (for Part 1 and 2 click here, then here), Evy, Tylor, Robbie and Momo converge once again to discuss our two favourite things; veganism and Harry Potter, and to explore the habits and customs of wizards and witches through the lens of animal rights. We talk about the ethical concerns a vegan might have in Transfiguration, the problematic role of owls in wizarding society, and later on subject ourselves to an immensely challenging Harry Potter trivia quiz. Also on this episode... Robbie, Evy and Tylor admit to underestimating Hufflepuff vegans and Momo is here to share what kind of vegan activists the 'puffs are! Is Care of Magical Creatures an ethical subject of study? When you transfigure an inanimate object into an animal, is it sentient? Is Transfiguration the solution to creating lab grown meat in the wizarding world? Are wizards managing muggles the same way they manage magical beasts?! Horse-drawn carriages vs thestral-drawn carriages; are they equally cruel and could there be an ethical alternative? Are owls the domesticated animals of the wizarding world? Does the wizarding world's abstention from technology make them more dependent on the exploitation of animals? Is Newt Scamander a good example of an animal rights activist? Would Newt be vegan? Is the newtcase a sanctuary or a zoo? We discuss parallels between the Circus Arcanus and non magical animals in entertainment. Is demiguise fur the wizarding equivalent of silk? This episode is brought to you by Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com! This week on ChickPeeps, Evy speaks to Dr.Melanie Joy, PhD., about managing relational conflict between vegans and non vegans, and the social conditioning that makes the majority of society resistant to embracing veganism. A harvard educated psychologist, international speaker and author, Melanie has long been exploring the question of what makes a person ready to learn about veganism, and this episode she speaks about the importance of vegan allies in this movement, how vegans activists can suffer from secondary traumatic stress disorder, and the self care practices that are essential to being a lifelong activist. Also on this episode... Dr.Joy discusses the idea of being 'ready' for veganism and encourages vegan activists to focus their efforts on the 'low hanging fruit'. The perspective shift that happens when you go vegan - 'You don't see different things, you see the same things differently.' The balance between being extremely sensitised to the plight of animals and being measured and relatable as an activist. 'When you look at the major problems of the world, these are not problems that exist because people are too sensitive; they exist because people aren't sensitive enough.' Moral perfectionism - Melanie discusses what she sees as the shadow side of being a conscientious person, and why it sets the movement back. Why self care is fundamentally important to being an effective activist. Is bearing witness to animal slaughter a moral obligation for activists? 'The animals don't need a movement of walking trauma survivors. The animals need a movement of healthy, self-connected, resilient individuals who are not going to burn out and who are going to be able to be their advocates for the long haul.' What is Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder and how it materialises in vegans. What is carnism? Has 'carnist' become a pejorative used to describe meat-eaters in vegan circles?  What is a vegan ally and how we can ask our loved ones to be that for us. The importance of relational literacy in the vegan movement. What can vegans do better to communicate our message? 'Vegan activists are doing an amazing job.' Dr.Melanie Joy encourages us all to pause and acknowledge the progress we've made! 'Give yourself permission to love non vegans even if you don't love what they do.'
