Ep 23: Veganism and Pets with Dr. Armaiti May

You asked, we listened! This week we are discussing the heavily pondered topic of veganism and pets, and the inherent challenges vegan pet lovers face. Listen in as Tylor and Evy discuss their lives with their companion animals and the comprises they've had to make for their pets lifestyles. Later on, (12.14 minutes) we interview Dr.Armaiti May, a vegan vet with a dog and cat house call practice, to seek her advice on the most ethical ways to raise companion animals. Dr. May sets the record straight on having vegan pets and addresses the most important campaigns in the vegan community that tackle the overpopulation crisis. Also on this episode…  Tylor is back and has some life updates! What's it like being a vegan vet and the challenges posed to Dr.May's ethical beliefs when studying veterinary medicine. The Veterinary Assocation for the Protection of Animals: "Education is a big part of what we're trying to accomplish. I think that's a key component of helping people to go vegan; empowering them with information, supporting them with resources, showing them how tasty vegan food can be." Spaying and neutering: Dr.May explains the ethics behind spaying and neutering and why it is the kindest solution to the cat and dog overpopulation crisis. 'The reality is as much as people want animals to live natural lives, if they're allowing them to reproduce that is directly contributing to the needless killing of other animals that are already here.' Open Admission vs. No-Kill shelters: should we, as vegans, be boycotting places that euthanise homeless animals? CAN CATS BE VEGAN???? Surprise guest, Betty, sets the record straight. What to do when your cat is a finicky eater. Dogs are omnivores! Is a vegan diet nutritionally superior for animals in the same ways it is for humans? The growing trend of the exotic pet trade: Dr.May weighs in on what needs to be considered. '[Wild animals] are not going to be happy in a home environment; they belong in the wild. They belong with their families.' To adopt or not to adopt? How do we help animals being raised and sold by corrupt companies with poor welfare standards? The animal abolitionist argument: Is less integration of humans and animals in the animals' best interests? Animal testing and medical research: is it possible to continue finding cures for human illnesses without animal testing? What's the best way to talk to animal lovers who are resistant to veganism? Venetia talks about her initial resistance to embracing slow fashion, and we talk about what makes someone 'ready' to learn about veganism and sustainability. Beyond vegan fashion: why cutting out animal derived fabrics isn't enough. What is fast fashion? 'What we're forgetting is that when a garment is as cheap as it is, someone somewhere is paying for that. The similarities between factory farming and fast fashion factories. Having already piloted their scheme with a number of ex-dairy farmers, including Katja & Jay Wilde, whose story was covered in the 2018 documentary 73 Cows, Geraldine joins us to talk about how Refarm'd is disrupting the dairy industry and what is next for the organisation. Also in this episode… Geraldine speculates on the limitations within the current model of animal sanctuaries and explains why dairy farms are perfectly equipped to become animal sanctuaries. "Finally, we're helping the farmers. The future is with them, not against them" - Geraldine describes the reaction of vegans to the work of Refarm'd. S3, Ep20: Anti-Poaching & Female Empowerment with Damien Mander, the Vegan Ranger

This season of The ChickPeeps is brought to you by our friends at Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com. This week on the show we're talking to the founder of the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, Damien Mander. Damien is a former Special Operations sniper who traveled to Africa in 2009, after leaving the military, in search of a new adventure. Instead he discovered "a purpose amongst chaos" when he saw the body of an enormous bull elephant that had been brutally killed for his tusks. In that moment, Damien's life changed forever and our movement gained a powerful, passionate and highly skilled animal advocate. In this interview Damien talks to Robbie and Evy about his vegan journey, founding the IAPF and about Akashinga, Africa's first armed, plant-based, all-women anti-poaching unit. We conducted this interview while Damien was at one of the IAPF reserves in Kenya. The sounds you can hear in the background of our conversation are the authentic noises of the Kenyan wildlife at night! Also in this episode… Damien identifies going vegan as the single most important thing he's done with his life. In pursuit of adventure, Damien talks about his initial motivation to visit Africa, having heard about the anti-poaching world years earlier. "These guys are defending the heart and lungs of the planet." - Damien talks about seeing the work of rangers for the first time, and how it made him see past his ego to reevaluate his life and the kind of person he wanted to be. "Having hunted [animals] before Iraq, I never hunted after Iraq because I knew what it was like to be hunted" - Damien talks about how his perspective on animals was radically shifted by his experiences serving twelve tours in Iraq. How the world of anti-poaching gave Damien a purpose that had previously eluded him. Damien shares how he repurposed his skills as a sniper in the army to set up the International Anti-Poaching Foundation. We learn about Akashinga, Africa's first plant-based all-female anti-poaching unit and Damien shares why he believes women are innately predisposed to be able to protect wildlife and de-escalate conflict. "The women are survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, AIDs orphans, single mothers, abandoned wives and when we set this up we thought, 'lets give an opportunity to some of the most marginalized women, in the toughest positions' - what we didn't realise is we were getting the hardest women there were" - on the all female Akashinga rangers. "There's two types of conservationists. Vegans… and those that don't like to take their work home" - Damien pulls no punches when talking about his stance on veganism as a conservationist. Damien has a fresh definition of the alpha male. Ep 27: Eating Disorders with Jasmin Singer and Bianca Taylor

This week The ChickPeeps have an honest, open conversation about what it's like to balance one's relationship with food with one's ethical values and how both recovery and veganism have impacted their lives. Momo and Evy are joined by vegan fitness coach and self love advocate, the fearless Bianca Taylor, who recounts her journey from struggling with anorexia to truly loving and celebrating her body. Later on, we interview the incredible Jasmin Singer, senior editor of Vegnews and author of the memoir Always Too Much and Never Enough, who shares her story of developing a binge eating disorder and how she transformed her relationship with food from self-abuse to self care. Also, on this episode… 'You can't eat that, can you?' The important distinction between 'can't and 'won't'. Going vegan mindfully after an eating disorder. Bianca discusses being a personal trainer and how she helps people in the midst of an ED. 'Good' vs. 'bad' foods - how do we not backslide into this mentality of categorising foods as a vegan. Bianca and Momo share how their lives have expanded since they chose the path of self-love. Jasmin discusses the journey from food as an enemy, to food as a friend, to somewhere in between. 'It wasn't until I was well into my 30s that I realised that food can actually be something that not only is a direct representation of who we wanna be and what our world view is but also something that can fill us and allow us to really sit more comfortably in our authenticity.' The universal feeling of not being enough. Guilt and shame. How to deal with these emotions surrounding food when we slip up as new vegans. How to talk about veganism with people who've been through an eating disorder. Switching your focus from vanity to self care. 'That's when food was no longer what it had been for me in the 80s, which was a vehicle for changing; it was a vehicle for being in line with who I wanted to be.' Letting go of an eating disorder. Jasmin and Evy discuss whether or not true recovery is possible. How to deal with a perfectionist mindset when it comes to diet. Body positivity and representation in the vegan community. S2, Ep18: Stray Cat Alliance with Christi Metropole

This week on The ChickPeeps, Robbie, Tylor and Evy visit the Stray Cat Alliance headquarters and talk to founder, Christi Metropole about her work running a shelter that saves and rehomes 1,400 cats per year. We discuss the role of vegan advocacy in an animal welfare organisation, the inherent inner conflict vegans face when adopting a cat, and the imperfect solutions we have to the problem of overpopulation. Also in this episode... Christi shares how her vegan values and her love of cats went hand in hand, and the decision to advocate for veganism through her work in animal welfare.. How Christi 'trapped' her first cat and began her mission to protect cats when she founded Stray Cat Alliance. Christi explains the 'Trap, Neuter, Return' program and why culling animals in the wild doesn't work to control the population. Christi highlights the urgency for resources for companion animals in underserved communities. We discuss the inner conflict of vegans who feed their cats a meat diet. Christi explains why Stray Cat Alliance is a 'No-Kill' organisation and why she believes the no-kill approach 'isn't a fantasy'. Christi gives her opinion on open admission shelters in LA. 2023. 08. 16.

    What Happened To The ChickPeeps?

Everything was going so well... It was Spring of 2021 and life was returning to a semblance of normality. We were leaving our lockdown caves for work, spending more time outdoors than in deep inner turmoil, and a new ChickPeeps episode dropped every Wednesday, sometimes even on time. We were having complex conversations about vegan capitalism, food equity and greenwashing, and things were getting a whole lot more interesting when, suddenly, season 3 came to an abrupt halt. The ChickPeeps promised to return in Autumn 2021 with a brand new season. But when the vegan world needed them most, they vanished... Hello, sweet 'peeps! It's been a hot minute and we appreciate we left a ChickPeep shaped hole in many of your lives, promptly plucking the podcast from the orbit just as it was reaching its peak. Call it an Irish Goodbye, or a French Escape, call it just plain rude and disorganized, whatever it was, this unprecedented hiatus and echoey silence from Team ChickPeep left many of you citing the constant refrain: 'What Happened To The ChickPeeps?', 'Anyone still read these emails?' And, most piteously, 'Are you guys ever coming back? :,( ? We're still here, and we hear you, so we've come together for a special episode to answer all these questions and more. In this episode...   ChickPeeps Catchup - a lot can change in two years! Robbie models a surprisingly wholesome t-shirt and spiritual growth, Momo discusses her ADHD diagnosis and leaving social media, Tylor is a magical cookbook author and Evy comes out as not-an-activist. MoJo; we ship it. ChickPeeps Rewind - listen and cringe-a-long as we listen back to our younger setting intentions for the podcast and evaluate their success. The future of ChickPeeps - Is the podcast ending? - Because it wouldn't be a ChickPeeps episode without a ridiculous scenarios game, we make some educated guesses on where each host will end up in the next 10 years in: 'Who's Most Likely To...? First Official ChickPeeps Meetup Announcement: will Momo and Tylor finally get to meet in person at Robbie's sanctuary or outside Tylor's prison cell? An uninvited past guest makes an uncomfortable reappearance. Snip snap, snip snap - one of us shares their personal reasoning for choosing to undergo sterilization. Is a ChickPeep hole shaped like a Chicken or a Chickpea? (jk, we don't get round to this) The hosts share some resources that have brought insight, support and joy to their vegan lives - Robbie: Visit a Sanctuary to connect with rescued animals! You may be thinking that for a vegan podcast we really don't spend much time discussing how to make delicious, simple, healthy vegan food. We thought that too, so this week we are joined by talented chef, co-founder of Wicked Healthy, Director of Plant-Based Innovation at Tesco, and all-around wonderful person, Derek Sarno. Evy and the newest ChickPeeps recruit, MJ, talk to Derek about Buddhism, why he prefers the term 'free from animals' over veganism, and the future of plant-based food. Also on this episode... Meet MJ, friend to The ChickPeeps and our very first guest-host! What is Varganism? MJ explains the latest craze in the plant-based world. Derek explains why he went vegan or 'free from animals'. How losing the love of his life led Derek to Buddhism and a deeper empathy with animals. 'It hurt so bad that I didn't want anyone else to feel that pain.' Derek explains the parallels between going vegan and the five steps of grief. Vegan food for meat eaters: Derek shares the inspiration behind the Wicked Healthy range. When you're not a foodie: Some basic recipes and tips for beginner vegan cooks. How to train yourself to like gross vegetables: Evy shares a dark vegan secret. 'You can find an excuse not to do anything…whatever it is, cleaning your room, veganism… it's the reasons to do it that really matter.' 'Plant-pushers not meat-shamers': Derek tells us about the versatility of mushrooms as a non-processed plant-protein and how he hopes the farming industry will embrace them. "I don't need anything to die for me to live a very happy and successful life." We discuss snobbery towards vegans in the restaurant business and how to earn respect from non vegan chefs. 'There's no way that the way we eat now can sustain itself, there's some immediate actions that need to be happen and it's not eating animals.' Uh-oh, we screwed up! The ChickPeeps receive an update on the fennec fox story from a listener and we are sorry. Links: Derek and Chad's website Preorder the new Wicked Healthy cookbook!
