Use code PEEPS at checkout for 25% off your first order at https://try.veestro.com/chickpeeps!   This week on The ChickPeeps we take time out of our vegan-focused discourse to discuss the wildfires that broke out across Australia causing unimaginable devastation to Australia's wildlife. Evy speaks to Simone Clarke and Lena Aalby of World Animal Protection Australia to get an insight into what daily life is like now for the animal advocates in Australia, working to protect perhaps the most vulnerable victims of disasters. Simone and Lena share about the challenges faced in recovering from the fires, what's happening to the rescued animals and why they believe in prioritising long-term recovery work to best protect animals in disasters. Also on this episode… Simone and Lena discuss how charities spring into action and coordinate their strategies to approach all aspects of protecting animals affected by disasters. Lena shares about the emergency relief work she personally partakes in to rescue and rehabilitate injured  and orphaned animals. 1 billion animals perished: Is this statistic accurate and what does it mean for the future of the Australian wildlife? Can these animals be rehabilitated and released into the wild after so much of the land was destroyed? The resilience of the Australian landscape. Why World Animal Protection believe in advocating for policy change as part of their strategy to protect animals. What is the point of saving farm animals affected by disasters when ultimately people are going to kill them to eat? Is veganism included in World Animal Protection's disaster prevention strategy? Is fundraising the only thing we can do to help Australia heal? Isn't climate change only going to make the fires increase and is there hope for handling this problem? 3. What Happened To The ChickPeeps?

    2023. 08. 16.

    What Happened To The ChickPeeps?

Everything was going so well... It was Spring of 2021 and life was returning to a semblance of normality. We were leaving our lockdown caves for work, spending more time outdoors than in deep inner turmoil, and a new ChickPeeps episode dropped every Wednesday, sometimes even on time. We were having complex conversations about vegan capitalism, food equity and greenwashing, and things were getting a whole lot more interesting when, suddenly, season 3 came to an abrupt halt. The ChickPeeps promised to return in Autumn 2021 with a brand new season. But when the vegan world needed them most, they vanished... Hello, sweet 'peeps! It's been a hot minute and we appreciate we left a ChickPeep shaped hole in many of your lives, promptly plucking the podcast from the orbit just as it was reaching its peak. Call it an Irish Goodbye, or a French Escape, call it just plain rude and disorganized, whatever it was, this unprecedented hiatus and echoey silence from Team ChickPeep left many of you citing the constant refrain: 'What Happened To The ChickPeeps?', 'Anyone still read these emails?' And, most piteously, 'Are you guys ever coming back? :,( ? We're still here, and we hear you, so we've come together for a special episode to answer all these questions and more. In this episode...   ChickPeeps Catchup - a lot can change in two years! Robbie models a surprisingly wholesome t-shirt and spiritual growth, Momo discusses her ADHD diagnosis and leaving social media, Tylor is a magical cookbook author and Evy comes out as not-an-activist. MoJo; we ship it. ChickPeeps Rewind - listen and cringe-a-long as we listen back to our younger setting intentions for the podcast and evaluate their success. The future of ChickPeeps - Is the podcast ending? - Because it wouldn't be a ChickPeeps episode without a ridiculous scenarios game, we make some educated guesses on where each host will end up in the next 10 years in: 'Who's Most Likely To...? First Official ChickPeeps Meetup Announcement: will Momo and Tylor finally get to meet in person at Robbie's sanctuary or outside Tylor's prison cell? An uninvited past guest makes an uncomfortable reappearance. Snip snap, snip snap - one of us shares their personal reasoning for choosing to undergo sterilization. Is a ChickPeep hole shaped like a Chicken or a Chickpea? (jk, we don't get round to this) The hosts share some resources that have brought insight, support and joy to their vegan lives - Robbie: Visit a Sanctuary to connect with rescued animals! Ep 14: Vegan Fashion with Leanne Mai-Ly Hilgart

The ChickPeeps discuss veganism vs the fashion industry and how to transition to a cruelty-free wardrobe. Momo and Evy talk about the vegan brands they like, what to do with your old non-vegan items and whether or not we would wear second-hand animal fabrics. Evy gets to interview another of her vegan heroines (13.30), the incredibly inspiring entrepreneur and found of the vegan fashion house, Vaute, Leanne Mai-Ly Hilgart, who shares anecdotes from her journey from child animal activist to teacher to founder of one of the most influential vegan fashion houses. Leanne shares valuable insights on how not following the rules or doing things the way people in the fashion industry expected led her to being one of the leaders of the growing vegan fashion scene. Also on this episode… Leanne shares stories of her early forays into activism challenging vivisection at her school and making her own vegan tshirts, and how her mission often isolated her from her peers. How she built her Vaute from scratch:  The things that I did that were important to me, I did them without asking for permission or approval or support'. I don't really think you can fail until you give up.' Fashion vs Veganism: How a vegan brand fits into a notoriously non vegan industry. 'Revolutionary concepts can't be understood by the current paradigm because they don't uphold the current paradigm.' Why wool is not just a haircut - Leanne gives details on the lives of sheep raised for wool. 'People aren't trying to be cruel, what they're trying to do is just make as much product as they can.' Animals just don't belong in business. Veganising your wardrobe. Leanne explains why she's careful not to wear products that look too realistic as animal products. I just did what was right in my heart. That wasn't necessarily understood or popular or liked but I didn't know any other way to do it.' The future of the fashion industry: will compassion ever be cool in the fashion world? 'Part of our mission is to use a fashion house as a vehicle or empowering and inspiring and educating.' Leanne shares her practices her leading a joyful life and how she navigates the challenges of entrepreneurship. Momo shares her favourite vegan spots in Berlin. 2021. 02. 24.

S3, Ep20: Anti-Poaching & Female Empowerment with Damien Mander, the Vegan Ranger

This season of The ChickPeeps is brought to you by our friends at Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com. This week on the show we're talking to the founder of the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, Damien Mander. Damien is a former Special Operations sniper who traveled to Africa in 2009, after leaving the military, in search of a new adventure. Instead he discovered "a purpose amongst chaos" when he saw the body of an enormous bull elephant that had been brutally killed for his tusks. In that moment, Damien's life changed forever and our movement gained a powerful, passionate and highly skilled animal advocate. In this interview Damien talks to Robbie and Evy about his vegan journey, founding the IAPF and about Akashinga, Africa's first armed, plant-based, all-women anti-poaching unit. We conducted this interview while Damien was at one of the IAPF reserves in Kenya. The sounds you can hear in the background of our conversation are the authentic noises of the Kenyan wildlife at night! Also in this episode… Damien identifies going vegan as the single most important thing he's done with his life. In pursuit of adventure, Damien talks about his initial motivation to visit Africa, having heard about the anti-poaching world years earlier. "These guys are defending the heart and lungs of the planet." - Damien talks about seeing the work of rangers for the first time, and how it made him see past his ego to reevaluate his life and the kind of person he wanted to be. "Having hunted [animals] before Iraq, I never hunted after Iraq because I knew what it was like to be hunted" - Damien talks about how his perspective on animals was radically shifted by his experiences serving twelve tours in Iraq. How the world of anti-poaching gave Damien a purpose that had previously eluded him. Damien shares how he repurposed his skills as a sniper in the army to set up the International Anti-Poaching Foundation. We learn about Akashinga, Africa's first plant-based all-female anti-poaching unit and Damien shares why he believes women are innately predisposed to be able to protect wildlife and de-escalate conflict. "The women are survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, AIDs orphans, single mothers, abandoned wives and when we set this up we thought, 'lets give an opportunity to some of the most marginalized women, in the toughest positions' - what we didn't realise is we were getting the hardest women there were" - on the all female Akashinga rangers. "There's two types of conservationists. Vegans… and those that don't like to take their work home" - Damien pulls no punches when talking about his stance on veganism as a conservationist. Damien has a fresh definition of the alpha male. Use code PEEPS at checkout for 25% off your first order at tryveestro.com/chickpeeps! How do a lifelong animal rights activist and a chicken factory farmer become friends? How does working with the oppressors of animals help the vegan movement? Leah Garcés, president of Mercy For Animals and author of Grilled, has made it her life's mission to advocate for animal rights by crossing enemy lines and working with the world's largest food corporations to change the system. In this episode she speaks to Tylor and Evy about her dedication to protecting animals from a young age, how meeting a factory farmer radically altered her outlook and approach to activism and how she navigates relationships with the people killing the animals she's trying to save. Also on this episode... Leah shares how the ducks in her backyard awakened her urge to protect animals. How Leah's dream of being a vet evolved when she realised she wanted to tackle the very root of animal suffering. 'Once I discovered that there was this world where you could advocate for farmed animals, and that could be a job, I never stopped advocating for animals, it was my professional job from day 1'. How having her first child inspired Leah to deeply consider her work and life's purpose. Leah talks about the initial inner conflict of being a vegan working in a welfare space, and how she reconciled herself with fighting for animal welfare. 'Conversations and empathy do not equal endorsement.' We talk about the fact that many vegans see working with people in animal agriculture as a betrayal of one's vegan values. Leah explains how her unique friendship with farmer, Craig Watts, radically shifted her approach to animal rights advocacy. How farmers become trapped as 'indentured servants' in the factory farming system 'Hate the oppression, not the oppressor,' Leah explains the Martin Luther King philosophy that inspires her activism. If farmers are not the enemy, then who is? How Leah built a rapport with and earned the trust of farmers in the first place. The role of protesting in animal welfare activism and when is the right time to stage a protest. MFA's Transfarmation project Leah talks about being a vegan mom and how much of her work she chooses to share with her children.  Leah weighs in on whether or not a fully vegan future is plausible.             Links: Buy Leah's book, Grilled: Turning Adversaries into Allies to Change the Chicken Industry. Ep 15: Honey with The Vegan Society

Many people struggle with the concept that honey is not vegan because they don't understand how taking their honey hurts the bees or they argue that if the bees were unhappy they could just fly away, or that the bee population needs commercial honey-making in order to thrive. So this week Tylor and Evy discuss the much debated topic of honey and why it isn't vegan. Later in the show, Evy interviews Elena Orde of The Vegan Society, the organisation that coined the term vegan, to learn about the many non-vegan standard practices in the stages of honey production. Also on this episode: Please send healing vibes to our dear Momo! Tylor explains how sentient bees are harmed in the process of commercial honey production. Elene Orde of the vegan society shares a bit about the life of a honey bee. Why do bees make honey? The differences between naturally produced and commercially produced honey - artificial insemination of the queen bee - sugar solution substitutes - the fate of queens bees in commercial hives - Smoking out the hive Why don't bees just fly away if they're unhappy? Reminder: Beeswax = E901 Honey as a health food - is it nutritionally superior to other sugar and unprocessed sugar-alternatives Bees and their role in the eco-system. Does our environment need commercial honey production to survive? How can we support honey bees? Is there an ethical-vegan way to consume honey? The Bees by Lalline Paul If insects die in the production of vegetables, isn't that the same as consuming honey?
