  2. The 'Understanding Depression' Episode Everyone Should Listen To

The 'Understanding Depression' Episode Everyone Should Listen To

You’ll want to send this episode to every friend who casually drops the phrase "I'm so depressed" when they're just having a bad day, or anyone trying to figure out where normal sadness ends and something much heavier begins. Have you noticed how casually we throw around major mental health terms over coffee, accidentally minimizing a condition that deeply impacts both the brain and the body? In this episode of But Are You Happy?, host Ashani Dante sits down with clinical psychologist Julie Chapman to explore the complex reality of depression. We go beyond the casual slang to uncover what it truly means. Together, they discuss the danger of casual language and why confusing ordinary sadness with a clinical episode does a disservice to both. Julie breaks down why depression looks completely different from the outside depending on who is experiencing it, meaning those closest to you might only ever see the tiniest cracks. They look at how a major life shift, like a relationship breakdown or having children, can shatter the protective people-pleasing structures keeping our underlying pain at bay, while confronting the physical reality of mental illness to dismantle the myth that we are just heads on sticks. The conversation also explores the relationship between our minds and bodies, challenging common assumptions about what a depressive episode looks like and offering practical insights into recognising a system failure before the spiral takes over. Madeleine West On Confronting Her Monsters And Motherhood At 47

Madeleine West has lived many lives— from Neighbours’ Dee Bliss to Underbelly’s Danielle McGuire, she’s been a fixture on Australian screens for decades. Beyond acting, she’s also an advocate, a survivor, and now, at 47, she’s stepping into a surprising new chapter... motherhood for the seventh time. What she first thought was menopause turned out to be an unexpected pregnancy, something that took time to embrace. But that’s not the only battle Madeleine has faced. Just a few years ago, she made the courageous decision to help police uncover a pedophile—the man who abused her as a child. In this deeply personal and powerful conversation, Madeleine opens up about: How she came to terms with becoming a mother again at 47 The media storm that forced her to announce her pregnancy before she was ready The darkness she had to push through to become the woman she is today The moment she wore a wire to confront her abuser This is a story of survival, strength, and reclaiming your own narrative - no matter how impossible it may seem. This episode we speak to Julie Goodwin who has had an extraordinary ordinary life. And in the last few years, she has had an extraordinary ordinary wrestle with her mental health. While you were buying Julie's cookbooks, watching her two stints on Masterchef and listening to her on the radio, she was taking care of everyone but herself (sound familiar?) and some issues she thought she'd successfully shoved in a low drawer spilled out and began to take over. In this first conversation for Mid, host Holly Wainwright talks to Julie about the winding road back from a "breakdown" and what happens when you stop doing everything for everyone all at once. 8. Reclaiming Aboriginal Identity: Tony Albert

    ٠٩‏/٠٨‏/٢٠٢٠

    Reclaiming Aboriginal Identity: Tony Albert

Tony Albert of the Kuku Yalanji people is one of the most lauded and prolific Australian artists you’ve probably never heard of. His work has attracted enormous attention and a slew of major art prizes for his extensive body of work centred on ‘Aboriginalia’; his self-coined descriptor for kitsch, divisive representations of Indigenous culture and characters popular in the 50s and 60s. Tony charges these naive objects and their implied stereotypes with highly political sentiments exploring representations of race and difference. We explore Tony’s lived experience as a young gay man, ambitious and educated, confronted with decades of endemic stereotyping and discrimination. And how it is that despite all the reasons for anarchy, Tony’s art is steeped in themes of unity and forgiveness.
