    Today we’re continuing our conversation about theistic evolution and the theological implications of how we think about origins. In this episode, Dr. JT Bridges helps us untangle what people actually mean when they say “evolution,” breaking down the difference between microevolution (small adaptations within a species) and macroevolution (the claim that one species can become another over long periods of time). We also talk about neodarwinism, intelligent design, and why so many debates about origins aren’t just about data. They’re about the philosophical assumptions we bring to the data. One of the most eye-opening parts of this conversation is the idea that science doesn’t interpret itself. Two scientists can look at the same evidence and reach different conclusions—because interpretation requires philosophy, and many scientists simply aren’t trained to recognize when philosophical assumptions (like naturalism) are steering the outcome. We also get into what’s actually at stake for Christians. If Darwinian macroevolution is taken as the full story of human origins, it raises serious questions about Adam and Eve, sin, and ultimately the coherence of the gospel message...especially the biblical teaching that sin entered the world through one man and that redemption comes through Christ.     In a “can’t we all just agree to disagree?” age, how do Christians know which doctrines are worth dividing over—and which ones faithful believers can disagree about in good conscience? The New Testament repeatedly warns that false teachers will arise from within the church, twisting the gospel and drawing people away. But that raises a crucial question: what exactly counts as “the gospel,” and what beliefs are essential to salvation? In today’s episode, I’m joined by David Geisler, who carries on the work of his father, Dr. Norman Geisler, to help Christians sort the difference between essential and non-essential doctrines—with clarity, charity, and conviction. We also dig into the 2025 State of Theology research (Lifeway Research commissioned by Ligonier Ministries) and the results are sobering: many professing Christians are confused about core, gospel-defining doctrines like God’s nature, the Trinity, the resurrection, and human sin. Together, we walk through 15 core essentials—doctrines that directly relate to salvation—and talk about why some truths may be logically necessary even if a new believer can’t articulate them yet. We also discuss why compromise may be one of the biggest threats to the church right now.     In this episode of Unshaken Faith, we take a careful, biblical look at Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer, a book that has quickly gained popularity in Christian discipleship and spiritual formation circles. Many listeners have asked whether we recommend it and after a thorough review, the answer is no. We walk through the book’s core framework, its view of spiritual formation, and how it defines discipleship and transformation. While some of the practices it encourages may sound helpful on the surface, we found deeper theological concerns underneath including influences that overlap with contemplative spirituality, charismatic/NAR-style formation models, progressive-leaning theology, and sacramental or mystical streams more commonly associated with Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic spirituality. Most importantly, we evaluate the book’s message against the biblical gospel. Does it clearly present salvation by grace through faith? Does it ground transformation in the finished work of Christ or shift the center toward practices and processes? We explain where we believe the message drifts and why that matters for everyday Christians. Our goal is not to attack people, but to equip believers with discernment. We encourage you to think biblically, test everything against Scripture, and stay rooted in the true gospel.
