Ruby Wax, spiced cauliflower & pomegranate salad and a mimosa mocktail

Nick and Angela are joined by broadcasting icon Ruby Wax. Ruby Wax is an actress, comedian, writer, television personality and mental health campaigner. Her life in show business began at the Royal Shakespeare Company and from there the lures of TV beckoned. Ruby presented shows like The Full Wax and Ruby Wax Meets in the nineties and noughties, interviewing Donald Trump, OJ Simpson, Goldie Hawn and Pamela Anderson in her inimitable style. A little known Ruby fact is that she was also script editor on all episodes of Absolutely Fabulous. In 2015, Ruby Wax was awarded an OBE for Services to Mental Health and her new book, the Sunday Times best seller I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was, is out now. Angela prepares a delicious spiced cauliflower & pomegranate salad with roast potatoes and chickpeas and Nick mixes a fruity mimosa mocktail for his hero. Ruby Wax talks candidly and comedically about her TV career, her thoughts on Louis Theroux and how her experiences at a silent retreat formed the basis for her new book. 3. Ruby Wax on not passing on ‘the baton of madness’ and the constant of change

Ruby Wax on not passing on ‘the baton of madness’ and the constant of change

From inside Ruby Wax’s bedroom, Annie gets up close and personal about Ruby’s life changes - from her troubled childhood and creating a comic persona as a result, feeling like a freak when she became a mother to those famous interviews on ‘When Ruby Wax Met,’ which changed how she was perceived.  Ruby’s latest book and touring one-woman play, ‘I’m Not as Well as I Thought I Was’ saw Ruby trying to find meaning by going on life changing journeys but it ended with her being in a mental clinic again. Here, Annie and Ruby discuss the ups and downs of mental illness, the juxtaposition of that with being funny and how she really is now. Ruby Wax was a fearless pioneer of the celebrity interview with her groundbreaking BBC series including interviews with Sharon Stone, Bette Midler, Madonna, Donald Trump, Bill Cosby and many more (each of which she reacts to here). Beyond her TV fame, Ruby is a prolific author with seven Sunday Times bestselling books including ‘Sane New World’, ‘A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled', and ‘How to be Human’. With a degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy from Oxford University, Ruby has bravely shared her own struggles with mental illness and her tireless efforts in this field have earned her an OBE. But, has mindfulness and her studies changed her life? 5. Divorce, Ruby Wax, the FIRE movement, Strings duo Balladeste

    20/08/2021

Divorce, Ruby Wax, the FIRE movement, Strings duo Balladeste

How common is it to experience ‘hate’ towards someone you once loved? We tend to think of 'hate' as one of the strongest emotions we can have, so what happens if you find yourself 'hating' your former partner, particularly if you have children with them. We discuss why some people experience this during or after the breakdown of their relationship, and how to move on from it. In the early 1990s Ruby Wax smashed out of the TV studio and rewrote the rule book on the celebrity chat show with 'When Ruby Wax Met…'. She joins Anita to look back at some of these encounters with stars such as Grace Jones, Carrie Fisher, Imelda Marcos, and one particularly memorable encounter with a future US President and his new girlfriend - a Mr Donald Trump. As part of our money series, we are looking at the FIRE Movement. The acronym, which stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early, is a method of extreme saving, in order to retire – or stop working – decades earlier. Recent studies suggest that over half of millennials do not see themselves as 'emotionally and behaviourally' connected to their job and company. Exhausted from high-pressure jobs and with a growing sense of burnout, some millennials are turning to the FIRE strategy in an attempt to become financially independent, sooner. Emma-Lou Montgomery is a personal finance and investment writer at Fidelity International, and Sarah Pennells is a Consumer Finance Specialist from the Royal London. Indian-American violinist Preetha Narayanan and British cellist Tara Franks met while studying at the Guildhall School of Music and went on to form a strings duo – Balladeste. Their style has been described as Contemporary Classical meets Folk in its broadest form - Indo-Baroque meets alt-folk minimalism. For their new album, Beyond Breath, they have taken fragments of melodic lines from a set of Indian devotional songs learnt in Preetha’s childhood as inspiration. They join Anita to discuss the cross-cultural melding of their musical ideas and styles. 7. Ruby Wax, Murty women, Summer clothes, National Baby Female choreographers

    28/04/2023

Ruby Wax, Murty women, Summer clothes, National Baby Female choreographers

What happens when a woman famous for her razor sharp wit is left stranded on a desert island with just her own company and a hermit crab called Spartacus? Author, broadcaster and mental health campaigner Ruby Wax joins Anita to explain why she decided to spend 10 days completely cut off from the modern world and other humans. The Prime Minister’s mother-in-law, Sudha Murty, has claimed that her daughter is the reason Rishi Sunak is in Number 10. She says she herself succeeded in making her husband a businessman, and now her daughter has done the same. To find out more about this claim and the Murty women, journalist and Executive Editor of Politico Anne McElvoy speaks to Anita. What are all the ruffles doing in summer clothes? Why are baggy dresses back? And how do you go about doing your summer shopping without buying the same dress as eight other people at the party? Grazia journalist Hannah Banks Walker and columnist Martha Alexander join Anita to chat all things summer fashion. The NHS Maternity services are in crisis. But how did we get to this point? What was it like to give birth at the very beginning of the NHS? Dr Emily Baughan, Senior Lecturer at Sheffield University, tells Anita how a forgotten book called National Baby can help us understand our current situation. The book was written by Sarah Campion, who had one of the very first truly ‘national babies’, cared for not just from cradle to grave, but in utero by the newly set up health service. Where are all the female choreographers? Liv Lorent is an award-winning choreographer who has spent her career going against the tide in a male dominated arena. 30 years on, she says not much has changed. She speaks to Anita about how women are rare in the industry, which is still lagging behind in putting women behind as well as centre stage. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Lottie Garton

  8. Ruby Wax | And Now for the Good News

    27/02/2022

Ruby Wax | And Now for the Good News

My guest on this episode of the podcast is Ruby Wax. She is a writer, comedian, mental health campaigner and author and someone whose interviews over the years inspired me so it’s quite something to be interviewing her for this podcast… Ruby joins me in this episode to talk about her latest book And Now For The Good News - the much-needed tonic for our frazzled world. If you feel utterly distraught at the constant negative news cycle - the climate crisis, increasing costs of living, injustice, Covid and, as this episode goes live, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, then you may have stopped searching for the light of hope on the horizon. You may just assume that there’s only bad news out there in the world to be shared. Here’s the thing, if all we ever expect is bad news. If we assume that there is only bad news that chain reaction can make us feel hopeless, helpless and fall into that space where we wake up in the morning and think ‘what’s the point?’  As someone whose particular shape and shade of depression took this form, a chronic apathy that eventually suffocated everything, I see this bad news cycle as something that can trigger the same feelings - even in the most hopeful of souls. Perhaps Ruby thought this too, which is why she went on a global search to find the good search.  If you don’t know the light is there, you won’t know to see it. And so Ruby compiled all her findings into the book so we can all see there is hope and to equip us with a positive approach for a brighter world and, most importantly, for a better collective mental wellbeing. Ruby has been open about her own mental health issues over the years, something that was a source of great comfort to me at a time when I needed it, so during our conversation, I also quizzed her about how she emerged from her own struggles, the coping mechanisms she put in place and what she learned from a masters degree in cognitive-based therapy from Oxford University. I came away from the conversation feeling so inspired, not least because speaking to Ruby it was a reminder to always be curious about the world around you rather than scared of it, how vulnerability can immediately neutralise tension and how, though it might feel hard sometimes, it’s important to look for and follow the light, because it is there.
