A week into her sobriety, Belinda Carlisle broke down in the middle of Harrods and called her husband with one question: how could you stay with me? Belinda has lived more lives than most. She started the Go-Go’s with a group of girls from the LA punk scene who had never played a note, and within three years they had the first number one album by an all-female band who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments. Then she went solo and gave the world ‘Heaven Is a Place on Earth’. In this conversation with Kate Langbroek, Belinda opens up about growing up the eldest of seven with a stepfather who told her she’d never amount to anything, and the music press that called her “pretty and plump”. She talks about the drugs she used partly to stay thin and the 30-year addiction that followed, and about getting sober at 47. She also tells the story of the night she met her husband and moved in with him the next day, leaving LA for the south of France four days after the 1994 earthquake, and the morning her teenage son came out to her and then announced it at his school assembly.
