A tornado raged through Margo Price's home-base of Nashville right as she was preparing to release her third album in March. A month later Margo’s husband and longtime collaborator, Jeremy Ivey, tested positive for coronavirus. While taking care of her sick husband and two young kids, Margo decided to push back the release of her new album. Now, "That's How Rumors Get Started" is finally out. Margo's written her way through personal devastation before and does so on the new album too. Although it also owes a debt to the more care-free music the Stones, Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac. Margo tells Bruce Headlam, in this episode, about how playing an open mic at a Best Western hotel made her a better songwriter, she also talks about hocking her wedding ring to record her first album, and how spending a weekend in jail was all the inspiration she needed to re-focus her career. Then we check in with her uncle, Nashville songwriter, Bobby Fischer. The Country Singer Margo Price Talks with Emily Nussbaum

Margo Price moved to Nashville from rural Illinois at the age of nineteen. After struggling for years to break through in the country-music scene, she found success with her 2016 release “Midwest Farmer’s Daughter,” widely considered one of the best albums of the year. Since then, she’s established herself as one of music’s new stars, an artist in the outlaw-country lineage—and a free spirit not afraid to speak frankly. Price talks with the staff writer Emily Nussbaum, who is well known as a television critic and is also a fan of country music, about her fourth studio album, “Strays.” It was released earlier this year, around the same time as her memoir, “Maybe We’ll Make It,” which discusses her years of struggle before establishing herself as an artist. They also discussed Price’s drug use—she speaks proudly of using psilocybin and her stance in favor of gun control in the wake of a school shooting in Nashville.

The Third Voice (feat. Lucius)

When Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig sing together on stage, it’s impossible to tell where one voice ends and the other one begins. “When we sing together, it creates this third voice,” says Jess Wolfe. “It's almost harder to sing without the other now.” In our final episode of Runaway Horses, Margo sits down with Jess and Holly, frontwomen and founders of the band Lucius.
