Capoeira emerged in Brazil, as a form of resistance from slaves brought from Africa in colonial times. In addition to being used for physical defense, capoeira was a way of protecting the identity of African slaves. Mainly because it was consolidated in Quilombo dos Palmares. There it came to be seen as a violent practice.
