ישנם המקשים: איך יכולים מיעוט קטן של אנשים להפיץ מעיינות לכל ישראל, ועד"ז להשפיע על מליוני איש בכל העולם (וביניהם גם אלו ש"דרכם להזיק") "לעשות צדקה ומשפט"?! והמענה: הרי הוא מאמין, שהקב"ה, בורא העולם ומנהיגו שמשגיח על כאו"א בהשג"פ, צווהו לעשות כך, וא"כ בודאי שיש לו את הכחות להצליח בזה. אבל גם עפ"י שכל אפשר להבין שאפשר להצליח בזה, ובהקדם ביאור ב' הלשונות במ"ש אדה"ז בקשר לגאולה שלו בי"ט כסלו (שנאסר בגלל חשד מרידה במלכות ולא הי' מקום בטבע שינצח אותם, ובפועל הסכימו לשחררו "בשלום") – שזה הי' באופן ש"הגדיל והפליא ה' לעשות בארץ וכו'". "הגדיל" פירושו שאע"פ שזהו דבר גדול אבל זה מובן ע"פ שכל. משא"כ "הפליא" פירושו שזהו דבר פלאי שלא מובן, ומ"מ חייבים לקבלו. וכמסופר שעל רוב השאלות ששאלו את אדה"ז בעת מאסרו ענה בהבנה והסברה – "הגדיל". אבל על שאלה א' לא ענה אלא פרץ בצחוק. היינו שביטל את השאלה כאילו לא הי' מקום לזה מלכתחילה, ללא הבנה והסברה – "הפליא" [המשך יבוא].

Synopsis

Some people ask: How can a small minority of people spread the wellsprings to all Jews, and influence millions of people throughout the world (including those whose “way is to cause harm”) to “do righteousness and justice”?! The answer is, if one believes that Hashem, the Creator and Ruler of the world, Who watches over every individual with Hashgacha Pratis, commanded him to do so, then he certainly has the capability to succeed. This can also be understood according to reason, based on the two expressions the Alter Rebbe uses regarding his liberation on 19 Kislev: “Hashem has done great thing and wondrous things in the land etc.” –“great things” means something that is extraordinary, but can be understood logically. “Wondrous things” means something miraculous that cannot be understood logically, yet one sees that this is the reality. In this vein, when the Alter Rebbe was interrogated during his imprisonment, he responded with logical explanations (“great things”), but there was one question that he did not answer at all, and instead he started laughing, meaning, he resolved the question in such a way that the question had no place to begin with, without logical explanation (“wondrous things”).
